About Hang Seng Indexes Company

Hang Seng Indexes Company

Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited is Hong Kong's leading index compiler, established in 1984 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank — itself a member of the HSBC Group — and responsible for compiling, publishing and managing the Hang Seng Family of Indexes for Hong Kong and mainland China markets. Its flagship is the Hang Seng Index (HSI), conceived by bank chairman Ho Sin Hang as a "Dow Jones Index for Hong Kong", created by research head Stanley Kwan with a base of 100 points at the close on 31 July 1964, and first publicised on 24 November 1969. The family now comprises over 2,200 real-time and daily indexes across flagship, benchmark, thematic, strategy and bond categories, including the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, the Hang Seng Composite Index Series and the Hang Seng China AH Index Series, licensed worldwide through data vendors.

A subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank

Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited was established in 1984 to house the index business that Hang Seng Bank had conducted through its research department since the 1960s. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank, one of the largest banks in Hong Kong by market capitalisation and a member of the HSBC Group, and it operates from Hong Kong as the compiler of record for the Hang Seng family. The company — earlier known in some references as HSI Services Limited — is responsible for compiling, publishing and managing the Hang Seng Index and the full range of related stock indexes, and its website is hsi.com.hk. Its governance sits within a major banking group, while index methodology and constituent decisions are presented as the work of a dedicated index compiler serving exchanges, asset managers, exchanges-traded fund issuers and data vendors.

Creation of the Hang Seng Index

The Hang Seng Index was conceived by Ho Sin Hang, founding chairman of Hang Seng Bank, who wanted a "Dow Jones Index for Hong Kong". Together with Hang Seng director Lee Quo-wei, Ho commissioned the bank's head of research, Stanley Kwan, to create the index. Kwan, who headed the Research Department from 1962 until his retirement in 1984, built the index with a staff of seven, drawing on input from economists, statisticians and government officials. The index was set with a base of 100 points equivalent to the total value of its stocks at the market close on 31 July 1964, and it was initially used for internal reference inside the bank before being publicised on 24 November 1969. It began with 33 constituent companies representing approximately 65 percent of the market capitalisation of the Hong Kong stock market, and it is a market-capitalisation-weighted index adjusted for free float.

Stanley Kwan, the index's architect

Stanley Shih Kuang Kwan (1925–2011) was born in Hong Kong into a traditional Chinese banking family, attended King's College until the fall of Hong Kong in 1941, and served as an interpreter for United States forces with the Chinese army during the war before joining Hang Seng Bank in 1962. He launched the Hang Seng Index in 1969, served on the government's Statistics Advisory Board from 1976 to 1984, and was awarded the MBE in 1985. His memoir, The Dragon and the Crown: Hong Kong Memoirs, published in 2008–09, devotes a central section to the creation of the index, and the University of Hong Kong marked the index's 40th anniversary in November 2009 with a public talk by Kwan and his niece Nicole Kwan on its origin. Kwan died in Toronto on 31 December 2011, aged 86, and is remembered internationally as the creator of the index that measures the health of the Hong Kong market.

Milestones of the flagship index

The Hang Seng Index's long history mirrors Hong Kong's economic and political fortunes. Its all-time low of 58.61 points was reached retroactively on 31 August 1967, after the base date but before publication. The index crashed in 1974 following the 1973 oil crisis and again in 1983 during the political stalemate in negotiations between China and the United Kingdom over Hong Kong's future. On 2 January 1985 four sub-indexes were established to classify constituents into distinct sectors, including the Hang Seng Finance Sub-index. The index passed 10,000 points for the first time on 10 December 1993, 20,000 on 28 December 2006 and 30,000 on 18 October 2007, setting all-time highs of 31,958 points on 30 October 2007 before the global financial crisis; it fell 4.4 percent on 20 March 2008 amid United States recession fears. Constituent numbers grew over time — 43 stocks by December 2007 and 48 by 2012, including PetroChina and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China — as the index absorbed mainland Chinese giants listing in Hong Kong.

The wider index family

Around the flagship, Hang Seng Indexes has built a family of more than 2,200 real-time and daily indexes in flagship, benchmark, thematic, strategy and bond categories. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index tracks mainland Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong (H-shares); the Hang Seng Composite Index Series, launched on 3 October 2001, provides a broad standard for the performance of the Hong Kong market; the Hang Seng China AH Index Series compares the A-share and H-share prices of dual-listed mainland companies; and the family further includes the Hang Seng China H-Financials Index, the Hang Seng China A Industry Top Index, the Hang Seng Freefloat Index Series, sustainability indexes and the Hang Seng Total Return Index Series, which reinvest dividends. The Hang Seng Industry Classification System supplies the sector taxonomy used across the family's construction and reporting.

Mainland China coverage

Although rooted in Hong Kong, the company's franchise is now inseparable from mainland China markets. The China Enterprises and Composite series measure the mainland companies that dominate Hong Kong listings by capitalisation, while A-share and AH-premium products speak directly to cross-border investors operating through the Stock Connect schemes. Sustainability and thematic indexes extend the family into environmental, social and governance benchmarking and into technology and new-economy exposures. This dual coverage — Hong Kong as the listing venue, mainland China as the underlying economy — is what distinguishes Hang Seng Indexes from compilers focused on a single market, and it explains why its indexes are treated as barometers simultaneously of Hong Kong sentiment and of international investor appetite for Chinese assets.

Licensing and data distribution

Hang Seng Indexes licenses its indexes worldwide for use as underlyings for exchange-traded funds, futures, options and structured products, and for benchmarking by asset managers, with distribution through global data vendors such as ICE. Index licensing converts the family's brand and methodology into a recurring-revenue information business inside Hang Seng Bank: every fund tracking the Hang Seng Index or the China Enterprises Index, and every terminal screen displaying its real-time values, depends on the company's calculation and licensing. The scale of the family — over 2,200 real-time and daily series — reflects decades of product segmentation by asset class, sector, strategy and return definition, each series maintained under published methodology rules with periodic constituent reviews.

Role in Hong Kong's financial identity

Few data products are as closely identified with a financial centre as the Hang Seng Index is with Hong Kong. Created in a bank research department in the 1960s, corporateised into Hang Seng Indexes Company in 1984, and expanded into a 2,200-strong family spanning Hong Kong and mainland China, the index remains the barometer quoted first in news coverage of the Hong Kong stock market — through the 1974 and 1987 crashes, the 1983 sovereignty-talks crisis, the 1997 handover, the 2007 peak above 31,000 points and the financial crisis. For WorldNM's directory of financial information providers, Hang Seng Indexes Company stands as the index-compiler counterpart to the region's exchanges: the institution that turns Hong Kong and Chinese share prices into the benchmark numbers by which the market judges itself.
