About Hard Edge Media

Hard Edge Media

Hard Edge Media was a Scottish press agency network founded in 1982 by former Fleet Street journalist Peter Steele to co-ordinate three regional agencies: Northscot in Aberdeen, Centre Press in Glasgow and Capital Press in Edinburgh. For nearly three decades it provided national and regional media with a single route to news and pictures from across Scotland. In 2011 the network was acquired by the Bristol-based agency SWNS and became a subsidiary of that group, with Steele remaining on its board.

Overview

Hard Edge Media — referred to in some reporting as HE Media or HEMedia — was not itself a single newsroom but a co-ordinating structure above three city agencies. Its purpose was commercial as much as editorial: by presenting Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh under one organisation, it could offer newspapers, magazines and broadcasters coherent coverage of Scotland from one supplier, while each constituent agency continued to gather news in its own city under its own established name. That model, unusual in its completeness for Scotland, made Hard Edge Media a significant intermediary between Scottish newsgathering and the national media for a generation.

Founding in 1982

The network was founded in 1982 by Peter Steele, a journalist with a background in Fleet Street, the traditional home of Britain's national newspapers. Steele initially launched the Northscot agency in Aberdeen. Expansion followed, first to Glasgow and then to Edinburgh, and Hard Edge Media was set up to co-ordinate the three agencies. The sequence matters: Hard Edge Media began not as a takeover vehicle but as the organising layer of Steele's own growing business, created once his Aberdeen agency had proved the model and sister operations in Scotland's other principal news centres had been added.

The three agencies

The network's constituents covered Scotland's main centres of population and power between them. Northscot, the founding agency, served Aberdeen and the north-east, including the region's energy industry and its rural and coastal hinterland. Centre Press served Glasgow and central Scotland, the country's largest urban area. Capital Press served Edinburgh, the capital, with its parliament, courts, financial sector and festivals. Together they gave the network a presence wherever in Scotland a story of national significance was likely to break, and their combined output — news stories and photographs gathered by locally based journalists — formed the network's product.

Services

Through its three agencies, Hard Edge Media supplied news copy and photographs to local and national media. The work was the standard fare of agency journalism: breaking news coverage, court and council reporting, photography of planned and unplanned events, sport, and human-interest stories developed from local knowledge. The network structure allowed assignments and material to be co-ordinated across Scotland, so that a developing story touching more than one city could be covered consistently, and clients received a unified service rather than three unrelated ones.

Industry role

Hard Edge Media's significance lay in giving Scotland a home-grown agency network of national scope. British national media have always depended on regional agencies for coverage outside London, but Scotland's distinct institutions — its legal system, its politics and, from 1999, its devolved parliament — made informed local coverage especially valuable and especially difficult for outsiders to replicate. A network built and led by an experienced Scottish-based operator, employing journalists and photographers in the three main cities, answered that need. Trade reporting at the time of its sale described the good name that Steele and his team held within the Scottish media, language that reflects a reputation accumulated over almost thirty years of operation.

The SWNS acquisition

In 2011 Hard Edge Media was sold to SWNS, the South West News Service of Bristol, then one of the largest independent press agencies in the United Kingdom. Trade reporting published in March 2011 announced that SWNS had taken over Hard Edge Media, which ran Northscot in Aberdeen, Centre Press in Glasgow and Capital Press in Edinburgh, and that the network was now a subsidiary of SWNS following a purchase understood to have taken place in January of that year, although it had not been publicised at the time. The deal took SWNS north of the border for the first time, extending its geographical coverage in the same way as its acquisitions of agencies in England, such as Mason's News Service in Cambridge. It also brought Hard Edge Media's agencies into a group that included PR companies 72Point and Palamedes PR.

Terms of continuity

The acquisition was structured to retain the network's leadership and staff. Peter Steele remained on the board of Hard Edge Media to oversee the operation, and SWNS stated that there would be no changes to key personnel. The group was recruiting at the time of the announcement, interviewing for news and photographic staff to strengthen the existing Scottish teams. SWNS managing director Andy Young told the Scottish media site allmediascotland.com that the group hoped to continue Steele's service to the local and national media north of the border, to rely on his vast experience and reputation for as long as he was available, and to build on the good name of Steele and his team so that the reputation would grow. The public emphasis on continuity signalled that SWNS had bought the network for its standing and expertise, not merely its territory.

After the sale

Within the SWNS group, Hard Edge Media's agencies continued under their own names. Later group accounts refer to the Scottish operation in terms of its constituents: reports in 2013 and 2014 list HE Media in Scotland among the businesses SWNS incorporated, and describe Centre Press and Northscot as members of the group alongside agencies in Birmingham, Leeds and Cambridge. A 2016 summary of SWNS acquisitions includes Centre Press and Northscot among the regional agencies the group had acquired. The Hard Edge Media name itself appears less prominently in those later accounts than the names of its agencies, reflecting a group practice of foregrounding local brands while ownership and distribution sit at group level.

The wider SWNS group

The organisation Hard Edge Media joined was itself on a long growth path. Founded in the early 1970s as the Bristol Agency and known for most of its life as the South West News Service, SWNS expanded from its first satellite office in Plymouth in 2005 into a business employing more than 100 reporters and photographers across locations including Bristol, Plymouth, Leeds, Solihull, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Cambridge and London. It launched SWNS.com in 2010, developed related businesses including 72Point, OnePoll and Oblong Films, and continued acquiring agencies through the following decade. In June 2026 the group announced a rebrand as Attention Industries, with SWNS continuing as a core brand — the distant corporate descendant of the transaction that had absorbed Hard Edge Media fifteen years earlier.

Legacy

Hard Edge Media's legacy is the model it proved and the agencies it sustained. Founded in 1982, it showed that a Scottish-owned network could co-ordinate professional newsgathering across Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh and sell it successfully to national media for nearly three decades. Its sale in 2011 formed part of the broader consolidation of British regional agencies into a small number of large groups, but the sale terms — its founder retained, its staff kept and reinforced, its agencies' names preserved — ensured that the work it had been created to co-ordinate continued, within SWNS, long after the network itself ceased to be independent.
