The paper traces its lineage to The Spartan, a weekly founded in 1843; the Herald and the Journal merged on October 1, 1982. It is owned by Gannett, which acquired it through New Media Investment Group's 2015 purchase of Halifax Media.
The Herald-Journal covers Spartanburg and surrounding South Carolina counties plus Polk County, North Carolina, and shares its newsroom with Gannett's other Upstate papers.
