About Hitradio Antenne 1

Hitradio Antenne 1

Hitradio Antenne 1 is one of the leading private radio stations in Baden-Württemberg, broadcasting a hot-AC hit format from Stuttgart across the central and northern parts of the state. Founded in 1989 and rebranded as Hit-Radio Antenne 1 in 1999, the station reaches more than a million listeners a day with current hits, regional news and the morning show with Nadja and Ostermann. Operated by Antenne Radio GmbH & Co. KG and housed with the Stuttgarter Zeitung and Stuttgarter Nachrichten under the roof of the Pressehaus Stuttgart in Möhringen, it is one of Germany's longest-running commercial regional stations.

Overview

Antenne 1 broadcasts a contemporary hit-radio format: current Top-40 music combined with news from politics, business and sport, delivered at a pace and in a tone aimed at a broad adult audience. Its long-running claim, "Hits und näher ran" (hits and closer), captures the programme philosophy — the biggest hits paired with closeness to the region. Regional reporting is central: news, weather and traffic are tailored to Baden-Württemberg, and the morning show "Hiradio Antenne 1" with presenters Nadja and Ostermann anchors the day. The station's website, which Wikipedia lists as antenne1.de, could not be independently verified during research, so no official domain is asserted here. The owner is Antenne Radio GmbH & Co. KG, with the studios at Plieninger Straße 150 in Stuttgart.

History

Antenne 1 went on air on 17 July 1989 on 101.3 MHz in Stuttgart — not yet as an independent station, but as a cooperation of four commercial programme providers from the press industry, each occupying different transmission windows. In 1994 the Landesanstalt für Kommunikation (Baden-Württemberg's media authority) restructured the state's radio landscape, tendering frequencies for three "Bereichssender" (area stations), each covering roughly a third of the state. The licence for the "Württemberg Mitte/Nord" area went to Antenne Radio GmbH & Co. KG, founded by the previous Antenne 1 operators and based in Stuttgart; on 1 October 1994 Antenne 1 launched as a full programme between Tauberfranken and the Swabian Alb.

The consolidation folded in neighbouring broadcasters: the Reutlingen station Radio RT4 (on air since 9 November 1987), whose coverage area fell into the new sector and whose shareholders joined the Antenne 1 operating company, continued from 1 October 1994 as Antenne RT4 — with most of its programme taken over by Antenne 1. From 1997 the Göppingen local station Filstalwelle likewise took over most of Antenne 1's programme and renamed itself Antenne Filstal. In most transmissions the station simply called itself "Antenne", using the Antenne 1 name only when the local variants carried their own programmes. The RT4 name and the last Reutlingen remnants disappeared in 1999, when Antenne 1 rebranded as Hit-Radio Antenne 1. An experimental digital offshoot, Antenne 1 info digital, broadcast a words-only programme on DAB from June 2002 to April 2007, at one point even transmitting state-parliament debates live and in full. In June 2024 the station inaugurated modernised studios and premises at its Stuttgart location.

Programming

The core programme is hit radio: current chart hits alongside pop music, with hourly news covering regional, national and international topics, weather and traffic for Baden-Württemberg. The morning show with Nadja and Ostermann is the station's flagship, built around humour, listener interaction and regional closeness. Listener-requested hits are incorporated into the rotation, and local promotions — such as the "Bargeld-Hits" cash prize campaigns — generate engagement. The format is deliberately mainstream: a wide-reach family programme rather than a genre station, positioned against competitors including SWR3 and Radio Ton.

Coverage & Audience

Antenne 1 broadcasts on FM across Württemberg Mitte/Nord — from Tauberfranken in the north to the Swabian Alb in the south — with its home frequency 101.3 MHz in Stuttgart, plus 103.4 MHz (the former RT4 frequency from the Raichberg) and the Göppingen-area frequencies of the former Antenne Filstal. The programme is also carried on DAB+, cable and as a webstream. The station reports more than one million listeners per day, placing it among the strongest commercial stations in Baden-Württemberg. Hourly regional news bulletins keep the programme anchored to the area between Stuttgart, Heilbronn, Reutlingen and Ulm.

Ownership

The station is operated by Antenne Radio GmbH & Co. KG, the company founded by the press-industry programme providers that launched the 1989 cooperation and awarded the 1994 area licence. Hitradio Antenne 1 shares the Pressehaus Stuttgart in the Möhringen district with the Stuttgarter Zeitung and Stuttgarter Nachrichten newspapers — a press-house affiliation that reflects the station's origins in newspaper publishing and continues to shape its news operation.

Digital Presence

Antenne 1 operates a website and streaming presence alongside apps and social media channels serving the regional audience with music, news and promotion content. The station's digital history is notable: Antenne 1 info digital was among the earliest German attempts at a words-only DAB programme (2002–2007), with quarter-hour news cycles and live state-parliament coverage. Today the main programme is available as a livestream and on-demand content, extending the FM station's reach into the digital space while the regional news operation remains its defining asset.

One of Baden-Württemberg's Three Regional Giants

Hitradio Antenne 1 is one of the three private "Bereichssender" (regional broadcasters) of Baden-Württemberg, based in Stuttgart, with its official transmission area in the middle and north-east of the state — receivable well beyond, in adjacent regions. The programme went on air on 17 July 1989 on 101.3 MHz — though not as an independent station, but as a cooperation of four commercial programme providers from the press industry occupying different time slots. In 1994 the Landesanstalt für Kommunikation reorganised the state's radio landscape and tendered frequencies for three regional broadcasters, each to cover about a third of the state. The Württemberg Mitte/Nord licence went to Antenne Radio GmbH & Co. KG, founded by the previous Antenne 1 organisers with headquarters in Stuttgart; on 1 October 1994 Antenne 1 went on air as a full programme between Tauberfranken and the Schwäbische Alb. The shareholders of the Reutlingen station Radio RT4 — whose area had been assigned to the new regional broadcaster — joined the operating company, so the programme continued from 1 October 1994 as Antenne RT4, with most of RT4's programme now taken over by Antenne 1. From 1997 the Göppingen local station Filstalwelle also largely took over Antenne 1's programme and renamed itself Antenne Filstal. Notably, Antenne 1 mostly just called itself "Antenne" in most programmes; only during the windows when Antenne RT4 and Antenne Filstal aired their own programmes did it use the name Antenne 1. The long-time claim was "Hits und näher ran" ("Hits and closer in"); the station got its current name at the start of 2000 and today's slogan is "Die besten Hits von heute!" ("The best hits of today!"). The format is Hot AC.

Programme and Digital Channels

The most popular programme is the morning show "Die Wachmacher", Monday to Friday 5–10 a.m. Beyond the FM programme the station runs more than 30 thematic web channels — Sommer-Hits, Schlager, Chillout, Oldies, Modern Rock, Classic Rock, songs for kids, In the Mix, Top 40, 80er, 90er and more. For its 30th birthday in 2019 the station staged the "Hitradio antenne 1 Feiertag": municipalities across Baden-Württemberg applied to host a free open-air festival organised entirely by the station's team, with German top acts — the winning town celebrated on 21 September 2019. In June 2024 modernised studios and premises at the Stuttgart location were inaugurated. The owner is Antenne Radio GmbH & Co. KG; the address is Plieninger Straße 150, 70567 Stuttgart (also under the roof of the Pressehaus Stuttgart in Möhringen). With more than a million listeners a day, Hitradio Antenne 1 is the commercial voice of Württemberg — from a 1989 time-sharing cooperation to one of the state's three regional pillars.
