About Hofer Anzeiger

Hofer Anzeiger

The Hofer Anzeiger is a German local daily newspaper for the city of Hof in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. It appears as the Hof local edition of the Frankenpost, the large regional daily of northeastern Upper Franconia, and looks back on a publishing tradition that began in 1801 with the Höfer Intelligenz-Blatt. Since 1968 the Hofer Anzeiger has belonged to the Frankenpost Verlag GmbH, whose seat is in Hof. The paper appears on working days, Monday through Saturday, within the Frankenpost's edition system. The Frankenpost, with a sold circulation of around 26,636 copies, is the second-largest daily of Upper Franconia after the Fränkischer Tag and part of the HCSB publishing group of the Süddeutscher Verlag. The paper's digital home is the Frankenpost online portal at frankenpost.de.

Overview

The Hofer Anzeiger is published on working days as the Hof edition of the Frankenpost. Its distribution area is the city of Hof, the university town on the Saale known for the Hofer Filmtage film festival, the Freiheitshalle and the Untreusee lake, and the surrounding district of Hof with towns including Naila, Münchberg, Rehau and Selb. The paper's local section reports from the town councils and the district administration, while the Frankenpost's regional and national pages cover northeastern Upper Franconia, Bavarian state politics, German federal politics and international news.

The Frankenpost appears with nine editions: the Hofer Anzeiger for Hof, the Marktredwitzer Tagblatt, the Münchberg-Helmbrechtser Zeitung, the Rehauer Tagblatt, the Sechsämterbote for Wunsiedel, the Selber Tagblatt, the Sechsämter Neueste Nachrichten for Arzberg, and editions for Kulmbach and Naila. The Hofer Anzeiger's circulation is reported together with the Rehauer Tagblatt, at around 16,500 copies in earlier years.

The audience of the Hofer Anzeiger is the population of Hof and its surroundings: households that value a daily paper with more than 220 years of tradition in the city, from the film festival audience to the employees of the textile and logistics industries and the university community. The paper's history, from the expropriation of its presses in 1945 to its integration into the Frankenpost in 1968, mirrors the ruptures and continuities of the German regional press in the 20th century.

History

The Hofer Anzeiger was founded in 1801 as the Höfer Intelligenz-Blatt, making it one of the older local newspapers of Franconia. Its publisher was the Mintzel'sche Buchdruckerei in Hof, a printing house that had existed since 1642. In October 1945 the printing house's machinery was expropriated on the orders of the American military government and only returned to the former owners after a legal dispute in 1952. Until 1952 the Frankenpost was printed on the expropriated presses of the Hofer Anzeiger.

The Frankenpost itself was founded on 16 October 1945 by the publishers Hans Seidel and Tibor Yost, appearing initially only on Tuesdays and Fridays, and became a daily in the strict sense only in October 1970 with its switch to six issues per week. After the founding of the Federal Republic in 1949, the licence requirement was lifted and the old publishers could reissue their papers: alongside the Frankenpost, Hof saw the social-democratic Oberfränkische Volkszeitung, the bourgeois Hofer Anzeiger and the Hofer Presse. The competition was fierce, and the Frankenpost's circulation sank from around 100,000 at its start to around 40,000 in the last quarter of 1949.

In 1968 the Hofer Anzeiger joined the Frankenpost Verlag, ending the rivalry between the two papers and uniting Hof's newspaper tradition under one roof. In 1969 the heirs of the Frankenpost's founders sold the paper to the Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft (ddvg), a media holding of the SPD; in 1986 the Süddeutscher Verlag took a 70 percent stake. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 the publishing house expanded into the former GDR, launching the Vogtlandpost two days after the border opening, followed by the Vogtland-Anzeiger, the Thüringenpost and the Sachsenpost, later renamed the Zwickauer Tageblatt. Today the Frankenpost belongs to the HCSB publishing group (Hof, Coburg, Suhl, Bayreuth) of the Süddeutscher Verlag and thus to the SWMH media group.

Coverage and Content

The local section of the Hofer Anzeiger covers Hof and the district. Regular topics include the town council and the district administration, urban development in the Saale city, the Hofer Filmtage and the year-round cultural life, the regional economy with the textile tradition, the logistics industry and the university, schools and education, health care, the police blotter and court reporting, club and association life, church news, culture and events, and local sport. Hof's position at the former inner-German border and its proximity to the Czech Republic give cross-border topics a regular presence.

The Frankenpost's regional and national pages cover northeastern Upper Franconia, Bavarian state politics, German federal politics, international news, the economy, culture and sport. Weekend editions carry expanded magazine content. The division between the centrally produced sections and the locally produced pages gives readers a complete daily newspaper: the breadth of a large regional newsroom combined with the proximity of journalists who work in Hof itself.

Advertising in the Hofer Anzeiger reaches households in Hof and the district precisely, making the paper an important medium for local retailers, craftsmen, service providers, the real-estate market and job advertisements. The Blickpunkt Verlag GmbH, a subsidiary of the Frankenpost in Hof, publishes the group's free weekly papers.

Organization and Ownership

The Hofer Anzeiger is published as the Hof local edition of the Frankenpost by the Frankenpost Verlag GmbH in Hof. The publishing house belongs to the HCSB publishing group of the Süddeutscher Verlag and thus to the SWMH media group. The editor-in-chief is Stephan Sohr, and the managing director is Andreas Heinkel. The local editorial team produces the local pages for Hof, while the central editorial departments supply the regional and national sections.

The paper is printed at the Frankenpost's own printing centre in Hof-Moschendorf on the Schaumbergstraße, where the Frankenpost, the weekly Blickpunkt aus Hof and the Nordbayerische Kurier from Bayreuth are also printed. The paper is distributed to subscribers each morning on working days across Hof and the district. The subscription model dominates sales. The edition operates within the group's shared services for printing, distribution, digital publishing and advertising sales, while the Hof newsroom retains editorial responsibility for the local pages that continue a tradition begun in 1801.

Digital Presence

The digital home of the Hofer Anzeiger is the Frankenpost online portal at frankenpost.de, where Hof news appears as a local section. Readers can follow reporting on the website, in the group's news app and through the e-paper edition, which reproduces the printed paper page for page for reading on tablets, smartphones and computers.

The portal operates on the paid-content model: full article texts are generally reserved for subscribers, while headlines and teasers are visible to all visitors. On social media, the Frankenpost's channels distribute headlines from northeastern Upper Franconia, including Hof stories, and provide a point of contact between the newsroom and its readers. For the Hofer Anzeiger, digital channels serve readers within the distribution area who prefer to read on their phones as well as former residents who have moved away from Hof but want to stay informed about their home city. The printed paper remains the core product, carrying forward a publishing tradition that began in 1801.
