About Hope 103.2

Hope 103.2

Hope 103.2 (callsign 2CBA) is a Christian community radio station broadcasting to Sydney on 103.2 MHz FM. Founded by the Reverend Vernon Turner and on air since 5 March 1979, it was one of Australia's first community radio stations and cemented itself as the country's first Christian FM station — a pioneering position it still holds today. Owned by Hope Media Ltd (formerly the Christian Broadcasting Association), it broadcasts a mix of Christian, easy-listening and hot adult contemporary music alongside devotionals, competitions and listener interaction — with a mission "to impact people with experiences of God's love so that they may become more like Christ and the world more like the Kingdom."

Overview

Hope 103.2 broadcasts on 103.2 MHz FM to the Sydney metropolitan area at 50,000 watts ERP (HAAT 204 m). The format is Christian radio with mainstream accessibility: contemporary Christian and easy-listening music, hot adult contemporary, short and extended Christian devotionals, Bible readings, competitions and listener interaction. The station's studios are in Seven Hills in Western Sydney, and it operates a DAB+ sister station, Inspire by Hope 103.2 — the first Australian community radio station launched on digital radio, in 2010.

The station is a community broadcaster with a ministry orientation: its programming is designed to be family-friendly and encouraging, carrying what its owners describe as a positive, relational message whether the music comes from Christian or mainstream artists. Its published mission statement frames the work in explicitly evangelical terms, while its day-to-day output — music, breakfast radio, competitions — is built for broad appeal.

History

The CBA vision and launch: 1953–1979

The station's origins go back to 1953, when the Reverend Vernon Turner saw the opportunity to form the Christian Broadcasting Association Limited (CBA) — a vision for Christian radio in Australia that would take a quarter of a century to reach the airwaves. When the federal government finally offered public broadcasting licences in the late 1970s, the CBA applied and was one of only two Christian licences granted nationally — the other going to 7HFC in Hobart. On 5 March 1979, 2CBA commenced broadcasting: one of the first community radio stations in Australia, and the country's first Christian FM station. The call sign encodes the heritage: 2 for New South Wales, CBA for Christian Broadcasting Association.

Five Dock to Seven Hills: the rebrand years

For its first two decades the station broadcast as 2CBA from studios at 420 Lyons Road, Five Dock. In the early 2000s it relocated to Seven Hills — the former home of WSFM — and in 2002 was renamed FM103.2 with the tagline "The Heart of Sydney," a deliberate repositioning toward a broader, more mainstream audience. The rebrand continued in December 2007 with the name Heart 103.2 — but that name was challenged legally by Macquarie Regional Radioworks, which held a generic right to the "Heart" name. The station retreated to the interim on-air identifier "Sydney's 1032" through 2008.

The rebrand saga reflected a station wrestling with its identity: a community Christian broadcaster seeking the audience scale of a commercial station without surrendering its ministry character. The national licence story underscored how rare the opportunity had been — when the federal tribunal offered Christian licences in every state in 1978, only two were ultimately granted: Sydney's 2CBA and Hobart's 7HFC, both of which became long-running institutions.

On Monday 15 December 2008 at midnight, the station took its current name: listeners had been invited to suggest a new name, and "Hope" was judged the best and most popular. Hope 103.2 was born — a name that matched the station's mission language and has endured ever since.

Hope News: 2019–2026

In November 2019, just before the Covid pandemic, the station established Hope News — a news service delivering local, national and international stories with a Christian worldview. The team was led by news director Anita Savage, a veteran of the ABC, Nine, Sky News, 2UE, 2CH and Bloomberg Television in New York, where she was the first international anchor; journalists Sarah Wiedersehn (formerly Southern Cross Ten Canberra, 2GB and AAP) and cadet Jefferson Shaw completed the lineup. The service ran half-hourly bulletins in breakfast and hourly bulletins across the working day.

In February 2026 the station announced it was ceasing the Hope News service after five years, citing several years of intense economic pressure on the charity and media sectors. CEO Phillip Randall called it "a deeply painful decision," saying the exceptional team of journalists had served the audience faithfully and ethically, but that the cost of the news service was no longer viable without placing ongoing strain on the ministry — despite extensive efforts to secure sustainable funding through sponsorship and supporter income. The closure marked the end of one of Australian community radio's most ambitious recent news ventures.

Programming and Content

Hope 103.2's format blends contemporary Christian music with easy listening and hot adult contemporary — designed, in the station's framing, as "family friendly" and accessible music with a positive or relational message, whether performed by Christian or non-Christian artists and regardless of whether the music intentionally carries a Christian message. Breakfast and daytime programming follows commercial-radio conventions — competitions, listener interaction, personality presenters — while Christian content runs through the schedule: morning devotionals, short Christian spots, Bible readings, and audio streaming of Sunday church services from St Thomas' North Sydney and St John's Parramatta.

The DAB+ sister station Inspire by Hope 103.2 (formerly Inspire Digital) carries Christian music as a digital-only community service, extending the ministry's reach beyond the FM signal.

Coverage and Audience

The 103.2 MHz FM signal at 50 kW covers metropolitan Sydney, with DAB+ and online streaming extending reception. The audience is Sydney's Christian community and beyond: families and listeners seeking encouraging, values-driven radio, as well as mainstream easy-listening audiences drawn by the music mix. The station positions itself as "Sydney's Christian radio station, encouraging and upholding family ideals and Christian values that are worthwhile for the whole community" — a formulation that captures its dual ambition: a ministry to believers and a welcoming listen for the wider city. Its published mission, in shorter form, is "communicating hope to transform life, faith and culture."

Ownership

Hope 103.2 is owned by Hope Media Ltd, formerly the Christian Broadcasting Association Ltd — the organisation founded by Vernon Turner in 1953. It is a not-for-profit community broadcaster licensed by the ACMA, funded through listener support, sponsorship and donations rather than commercial advertising. The ownership structure reflects its ministry character: the station is operated as a Christian ministry first and a broadcaster second, with governance accountable to its supporters and its founding mission — a model that has sustained it through nearly five decades of Australian broadcasting change.

Digital Presence

Wikipedia lists hope1032.com.au as the station's website, which hosts the live stream, program information and podcasts. The station streams online and through its app, and maintains social media channels built around its presenters, music and ministry content. Competitions and listener interaction — staples of the breakfast and daytime schedule — extend onto those platforms, giving supporters ways to participate in the ministry beyond listening. The DAB+ sister service Inspire by Hope 103.2 extends the brand digitally, and the station's online presence supports its fundraising and listener-support model — the financial backbone of the ministry since its 1979 launch.
