About idea Spektrum
idea Spektrum
idea Spektrum, since 2020 published as IDEA – Das christliche Spektrum, is the weekly magazine of the Evangelische Nachrichtenagentur IDEA in Wetzlar, the news agency of the German evangelical movement. Appearing weekly since 1979, the magazine is one of the most important opinion-forming journals of German evangelicalism, published on the theological basis of the Evangelische Allianz and read by the movement's leaders and engaged members. With a German print run of 34,000 copies and a Swiss edition of around 4,000, plus regional pages, the IDEA TV news program on Bibel TV, and the daily IDEA press service, the magazine anchors a multi-platform evangelical media operation that serves the German-speaking evangelical world.
Overview
IDEA appears weekly as the evangelical movement's news magazine: the publication that reports on church and society from the evangelical perspective and serves the communication within the evangelical sphere. The editorial program covers the church developments, from the EKD synods to the free-church conferences; the societal debates, from bioethics to religious freedom to the culture wars; and the evangelical movement's own life, from the missionary initiatives to the theological controversies that define its identity. The tone is journalistic and committed: IDEA reports as a news magazine but writes from the evangelical conviction, serving the readers who share that conviction and informing those who want to understand it.
The readership is the evangelical movement's leadership and engaged laity: the pastors, the church elders, the missionaries, and the committed Christians who want the news through the evangelical lens and who shape the movement's public witness. With each copy read by an average of more than three people, the magazine reaches around 100,000 readers, making it the evangelical movement's most-read periodical.
The German Evangelical Movement
IDEA serves the German evangelical movement (Evangelikalismus), the trans-denominational network of Christians who emphasize the Bible's authority, the personal conversion, and the missionary mandate. The movement spans the regional churches' pietistic communities, the free churches, and the independent evangelical works: a diverse landscape united by the theological basis of the Evangelische Allianz. The movement's relationship to the mainstream Protestantism is complex: the evangelicals understand themselves as the confessing core, critical of the EKD's liberal theological and political course, yet rooted in the Reformation's heritage.
The movement's media landscape reflects its self-understanding: dissatisfied with the established church press's perceived one-sidedness, the evangelicals built their own media, with IDEA as the news agency and the weekly as the flagship. The magazine's opinion-forming role means its coverage shapes the movement's debates: the positions on the societal issues, the evaluations of the church developments, and the theological orientations. In a secularizing Germany, where the churches lose members continuously, the evangelical movement's vitality, its growing free churches and its missionary initiatives, makes IDEA's reporting a chronicle of the church's most dynamic segment.
History
IDEA's history begins in 1970, when the agency was founded as the information service of the German Evangelical Alliance. The founding responded to dissatisfaction in pietistic circles with the Evangelical Press Service (epd), perceived as politically one-sided and unrepresentative of evangelical concerns. On February 17, 1972, the association idea (Informationsdienst der Evangelischen Allianz) e.V. was formally registered, with the German Evangelical Alliance, the Evangeliums-Rundfunk broadcaster, and the Association of Evangelical Missions among the founders.
Under editor-in-chief Helmut Matthies, who led the agency from 1977 to 2017, IDEA expanded to the secular press and professionalized its journalism. In 1979, the weekly magazine launched as ideaSpektrum, catering to the broader audience of clergy and lay members. The magazine's four decades mirror the evangelical movement's growth and its controversies: the expansion of the free churches, the charismatic renewal, the debates about the EKD's course, and the evangelical engagement in the societal debates. In 2020, the magazine was renamed IDEA – Das christliche Spektrum, and since June 2023, the agency has been led by the dual management of Daniela Städter and Dennis Pfeifer.
Coverage and Content
The church reporting covers the Protestant landscape: the EKD and its member churches, with the critical attention that the evangelical perspective brings to the synod decisions and the church leadership's course; the free churches and evangelical associations, from the Baptists to the Pentecostals to the independent congregations; the missionary societies, from the traditional missions to the new church-planting initiatives; and the ecumenical developments, from the World Evangelical Alliance to the local alliances. The societal coverage addresses the issues where the evangelical faith meets the public debate: the protection of unborn life, the family policy, the religious freedom at home and abroad, the solidarity with Israel, and the cultural developments from gender debates to bioethics. The movement coverage reports on the evangelical world's own events: the congresses like the Christustag, the initiatives, and the personalities who shape the movement.
The regional pages, offered since 2006 for West, Southwest, Hesse/Bavaria, North, and East, localize the national magazine: the readers find their region's news alongside the national coverage. The IDEA Spezial special publications address specific topics like seniors, travel, or reading. The idealisten.net online magazine, launched in 2008, with its print edition for young Christians as a biannual IDEA supplement since 2010, reaches the next generation.
Organization and Ownership
IDEA is published by the Evangelische Nachrichtenagentur idea e.V., based in Wetzlar. The association's products include the daily IDEA press service, the weekly IDEA magazine with its Swiss edition, the IDEA Spezial specials, the IDEA documentations, and the weekly TV news magazine. The IDEA press service appears daily online and is used by numerous Christian media, from the EKD's websites to the Swiss Catholic Church's portals.
The business model is the non-profit media model: the association's journalism is financed through subscriptions, donations, and the support of the evangelical movement. The subscribers are not just customers but stakeholders: the pastors and the congregations who fund the independent evangelical journalism as part of their movement's infrastructure. The weekly TV program IDEA TV, broadcast weekdays at 19:55 on Bibel TV since April 2013, extends the brand into television: the evolution of the earlier ideaFernsehen weekly magazine into the daily news format, bringing the Christian-perspective news into the viewers' daily routine.
Digital Presence
The IDEA press service's daily online edition is the agency's digital backbone: the news as it happens, used by the Christian media across the German-speaking world. The idealisten.net platform serves the young Christians online, and the magazine's digital editions complement the print weekly. The TV presence on Bibel TV gives the brand the moving image: the daily news from the Christian perspective, broadcast into the living rooms.
For the evangelical movement, IDEA is the information infrastructure: the press service that supplies the Christian media, the weekly that forms the opinions, and the TV program that visualizes the news. The daily online press service ensures the movement's media can react to the news as it happens: the EKD websites, the Swiss Catholic portals, and the confessional journals all draw on IDEA's reporting. Four decades after the magazine's launch, IDEA remains what the founders intended: the independent evangelical news service, the platform for the perspectives that the mainstream church press does not represent, and the communication medium of a movement that understands itself as the church's confessing minority, reporting the news from the conviction that the Gospel matters for the church and the world.
