About International Business Times Australia

International Business Times Australia

International Business Times Australia is the Australian edition of the International Business Times (IBTimes), the American online newspaper that publishes national editions across several countries. Available at ibtimes.com.au, the Australian edition carries business, technology, markets and general news with an Australian angle, drawing on both locally produced content and the global IBTimes newsgathering network. Its Australian operation has been the subject of notable scrutiny over its corporate structure and its use of overseas editorial labour, making it one of the more closely examined foreign-owned digital news operations in the country.

Overview

The Australian edition sits within a global publishing operation that, as of 2022, spanned editions for Australia, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States and an international edition. The IBTimes editorial proposition has always been internationally minded business coverage: each national edition is tailored to its market but shares the group's emphasis on business and commerce, markets, technology and world affairs. The Australian site publishes breaking business news, market movements, company developments, technology stories and general news of Australian interest, with content flowing in both directions between the Sydney-based operation and the group's newsrooms in New York, London and elsewhere. At its peak the parent company claimed a very large global audience — forty million unique visitors per month in 2014, with revenues of around $21 million in 2013 — though those figures date to the company's high-water mark and describe the global operation rather than the Australian edition alone.

History

The International Business Times was launched in 2005 by Etienne Uzac and Johnathan Davis. Uzac, a native of France, conceived the idea while a student at the London School of Economics, where he observed that the strongest business newspapers focused on the United States and Europe and saw an opening for broader geographic coverage. He recruited Davis to the venture, and in late 2005 the pair moved to New York City to launch the site, with Uzac focused on business strategy while Davis coded the site and wrote the first articles. The company, IBT Media, was headquartered in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan. Growth was rapid through the early 2010s: in May 2012 the company appointed Jeffery Rothfeder, a former national news editor at Bloomberg, as editor-in-chief; in 2013 it bought the struggling Newsweek magazine from Barry Diller's IAC in a headline-grabbing acquisition; Peter S. Goodman, previously executive business editor and global news editor of The Huffington Post, became editor-in-chief in 2014; and Dayan Candappa, the former deputy managing editor of Reuters, took the role in 2016 after Goodman departed. The same period brought retrenchment, with an estimated thirty per cent of editorial staff laid off between March and July 2016. In 2018 IBT spun out Newsweek as an independent entity co-owned by Davis and Newsweek president and CEO Dev Pragad.

The Newsweek interlude deserves its own note in the company's history. IBT Media announced the purchase of Newsweek and the newsweek.com domain from Barry Diller's IAC on 4 August 2013, a striking move for a digital-native startup barely eight years old. The trophy asset proved difficult to integrate: editorial leadership turned over repeatedly — from Rothfeder to Goodman to Candappa within four years — and the 2016 layoffs hollowed out the newsroom even as Dev Pragad arrived from London as global CEO and Alan Press was appointed president in a newly created strategic role in January 2017. In 2018 the company spun Newsweek out again as an independent entity co-owned by Davis and Pragad, ending an ambitious but turbulent experiment in print-digital consolidation. For the Australian edition, which continued publishing throughout, the episode illustrated the volatility of the parent company's strategy even as the local franchise maintained its steady output of business and general news for Australian readers.

The Australian edition's corporate history runs on a separate track. According to a 2017 BuzzFeed News investigation, International Business Times Pty Ltd — the Australian company — was registered in 2006 by James Kong, a Sydney-based entrepreneur, who continued to operate it as the local franchisee. Domain records listed Kong and the company as the registrants of ibtimes.com.au and the Philippines edition's domain. The BuzzFeed investigation found that the Australian edition was substantially powered by writers and editors in the Philippines and India working through Tune Media, a company founded and chaired by Kong that operated at least 18 English-language websites, and that the Sydney office address listed as the headquarters was shared with Tune Media but showed little sign of either company's staff when visited. The Philippines-based CEO of Tune Media told BuzzFeed that Kong remained responsible for the "IBTimes APAC edition" and that some Tune Media writers contributed to IBT Australia. IBT Media issued a statement that Australian corporate records appeared to contradict. The episode became a case study in the globalised economics of digital news: publishers targeting lucrative English-language advertising markets while producing the journalism far more cheaply offshore.

Content and Programming

The Australian edition's content mix reflects the parent brand's business-first identity overlaid with Australian news judgment. Business and markets coverage leads: ASX movements, corporate results, mergers and acquisitions, executive changes and economic data, alongside technology news spanning consumer gadgets, enterprise IT, telecommunications and startups. General news — national politics, crime, weather events and human-interest stories — fills out the offering, and the site carries opinion and editorial commentary in the IBTimes tradition. The global network gives the Australian edition access to international reporting it could not produce alone, while its Australian stories enter the group's shared pool for other editions. A 2014 company media kit described eleven global editions in seven languages, each able to select relevant stories produced in other countries for its own market — the syndication model that lets a relatively small national operation present a world news file.

Coverage and Audience

IBTimes Australia serves an Australian online audience seeking business and general news outside the domestic Murdoch, Nine and ABC ecosystems. Its readers encounter a product that blends Australian reporting with the international perspective of the global network — American market coverage, British and European business news, and Asian affairs — in proportions that differ markedly from the domestically focused Australian news sites. The edition's audience metrics are not publicly broken out from the global operation, and the parent company's headline audience claims date to the mid-2010s. What can be said with confidence is that the site has maintained continuous publication for the Australian market for nearly two decades, a tenure that spans the rise and consolidation of the country's digital news sector.

Ownership

The International Business Times is owned by IBT Media, the New York-based company founded by Etienne Uzac and Johnathan Davis. The Australian edition has been operated locally by International Business Times Pty Ltd, the company registered in 2006 by Sydney entrepreneur James Kong, who has also founded and chaired Tune Media. This franchise-style arrangement — a global brand operated in-market by a local company — explains both the edition's longevity and the controversies around its staffing: the 2017 BuzzFeed News investigation documented the gap between the edition's Australian branding and its substantially offshore editorial production. Readers evaluating the outlet's journalism should be aware of this structure, which the company itself has addressed only through disputed public statements.

Digital Presence

The ibtimes.com.au website is the edition's publishing platform, presenting the rolling news file in the standard IBTimes template shared across the global editions. Stories are distributed through search engines, social media and news aggregators, where the site's business and technology coverage competes for attention with both Australian and international outlets. The edition benefits from the search authority of the global IBTimes domain family while maintaining its Australian address and market focus. For Australian readers, it remains one of the few foreign-owned general news sites with a dedicated local edition — a reminder of the mid-2000s wave of global digital publishers that saw Australia as a market worth serving directly, even if the journalism itself is now produced across several continents.
