About Internationales Verkehrswesen

Internationales Verkehrswesen

Internationales Verkehrswesen is the German transport-science specialist journal: since 1949 one of the leading European transport journals for science and practice, serving the researchers and practitioners of the entire transport industry. Appearing quarterly, the journal brings the well-founded expert contributions on the backgrounds, developments, and perspectives of the entire transport industry, cross-modal and future-oriented, as the classic printed edition or as the digital eJournal. Published since January 2024 by the Expert Verlag in Tübingen, a company of the respected Narr Francke Attempto Verlag, the journal carries peer-reviewed and English-language articles for the international transport-science community, every quarter, without compromise, always.

Overview

Internationales Verkehrswesen appears four times per year as the transport-science journal: the medium for the transport science and practice, for the researchers and the practitioners of the entire transport industry. The editorial program delivers the expert contributions on the backgrounds, developments, and perspectives: cross-modal, from the rail to the road to the air to the water, and future-oriented, addressing the mobility transition. Since 2015 the journal applies the peer-review process and publishes an English-language edition under the title "International Transportation": the scientific quality with the international reach.

The journal's positioning is the science-practice bridge: the well-founded expert articles that the researchers write and the practitioners use, connecting the academic rigor with the operational reality. The media partnership with the VDI (Association of German Engineers), Fachbereich Verkehr und Umfeld, anchors the journal in the engineering community and its transport expertise. The subscription model serves the individuals and institutions: the printed edition plus the eJournal, with the archive access including the direct PDF download from 2010.

The Mobility Transition

The mobility transition that the journal covers is the transport industry's most consequential transformation: the decarbonization of the transport, the digitalization of the logistics, and the reimagining of the urban mobility. The journal's future-oriented expert contributions address the transition's questions: how the rail can absorb the freight from the road, how the cities can prioritize the cycling and the public transport, how the aviation can reduce its emissions, and how the shipping can clean its fuels.

The journal's 75-year perspective gives the transition the historical depth: the post-war reconstruction built the autobahns, the motorization filled them, the reunification connected the East, and the European integration opened the borders. Each transformation was debated in the journal's pages: the expert contributions that analyzed the backgrounds and projected the perspectives. The mobility transition is the latest: the journal serves as the science-practice bridge for the industry that must reinvent itself.

History

Internationales Verkehrswesen's history begins in May 1949: Hans Baumann brought out the first issue in Frankfurt am Main, in the post-war reconstruction when the transport system's rebuilding was the nation's priority. The predecessors were the Verkehrstechnische Woche (until 1940) and the Großdeutscher Verkehr (until 1944): the journal continued the transport-science tradition through the war's rupture. In 1960, after a brief interruption, the journal changed the publisher: from October it appeared with Dr. Arthur Tetzlaff.

The ownership chain reflects the German specialist publishing's consolidation: the Tetzlaff-Verlag was taken over by the Hoppenstedt publishing house in 1974 and later became part of the Deutscher Verkehrsverlag DVV in Hamburg. From 1963 to 2015 the journal was the organ of the Deutsche Verkehrswissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (DVWG): the society's official journal for over five decades. In 1990 the journal DDR-Verkehr merged into the Internationales Verkehrswesen: the reunification's transport-science integration. The editorial leadership passed from Baumann to Horst Heffele (1966) to Gerd Aberle (1972), the transport economists shaping the journal's scientific profile.

The modern era brought the internationalization: in 2015 the journal introduced the peer-review process and the English-language edition "International Transportation" for the first time. From 2016 to the end of 2023 the journal appeared with Trialog Publishers; since January 2024 it appears with the Expert Verlag, a company of the Narr Francke Attempto Verlag GmbH & Co. KG in Tübingen. The frequency evolved: monthly until 2010, bi-monthly 2011–2012, quarterly since 2013.

Coverage and Content

The cross-modal coverage addresses the entire transport: the rail with the Deutsche Bahn's transformation, the road with the freight and the passenger transport, the aviation with the airports and the airlines, and the shipping with the ports and the waterways. The urban-mobility coverage addresses the cities: the public transport, the cycling, and the new mobility services. The future-oriented coverage addresses the transition: the decarbonization, the digitalization, and the autonomous driving.

The scientific articles, peer-reviewed since 2015, deliver the research: the transport economics, the logistics, and the mobility studies, in German and English. The practice articles deliver the application: the infrastructure projects, the policy developments, and the industry innovations. The "International Transportation" edition carries the English-language contributions: the journal's international scientific voice.

The Transport Science

Internationales Verkehrswesen serves the transport science: the researchers who study how people and goods move, and the practitioners who build and operate the systems. The journal's 75-year history spans the transport's transformations: from the post-war reconstruction to the motorization, from the reunification to the European integration, from the climate crisis to the mobility transition. The journal documents these transformations: the expert contributions that analyze the backgrounds and project the perspectives.

The peer review since 2015 marks the journal's scientific ambition: the articles meet the academic standards while serving the practice. The English-language edition marks the international ambition: the German transport science speaking to the world. In the mobility transition where the transport must decarbonize, the journal's role is critical: the science-practice bridge for the industry's most consequential transformation.

Organization and Ownership

Internationales Verkehrswesen is published by the Expert Verlag, a company of the Narr Francke Attempto Verlag GmbH & Co. KG, Dischingerweg 5, 72070 Tübingen. The editorial leadership (Redaktionsleitung) is Dipl.-Phys. Ulrich Sandten-Ma, with the editorial team including Patrick Sorg. The bibliographic data: ISSN 0020-9511 (print), eISSN 2942-7800. The media partnership with the VDI Fachbereich Verkehr und Umfeld connects the journal to the engineering community.

The business model is the scientific-publishing model: the subscriptions with the domestic annual prices of 125 euros (print), 229 euros (eJournal), and 245 euros (print plus eJournal), the single issue at 45 euros, and the DVWG members' 60 percent discount (98 euros print plus archive, 91.60 euros eJournal plus archive). The advertising from the transport industry reaches the science-practice readership.

Digital Presence

The elibrary.narr.digital platform carries the journal digitally: the eJournal with the archive access including the direct PDF download from 2010. The internationales-verkehrswesen.de website presents the magazine: the current issues and the subscription. The narr.de publisher page presents the journal: the technology journals' portfolio. The DVWG website promotes the journal: the membership's subscription benefit.

For the transport science and practice, the Internationales Verkehrswesen is the journal: the quarterly publication with the well-founded expert contributions on the entire transport industry's backgrounds, developments, and perspectives, cross-modal from the rail to the road to the air to the water and future-oriented toward the mobility transition, peer-reviewed since 2015 and bilingual with the "International Transportation" English-language edition. Since 1949, through the post-war reconstruction, the motorization, the reunification's DDR-Verkehr integration, and the mobility transition's decarbonization, the journal has served the transport science: the leading European transport journal for science and practice, from the Expert Verlag in Tübingen, into the future.
