About Intisari

Intisari

Intisari, whose name means Digest, is an Indonesian general-interest magazine founded in Jakarta in 1963 and now published online by Grid Network, part of Kompas Gramedia. Modelled in format on Reader's Digest, it was published as a monthly print magazine from 1963 to 2024 and continues as online media. Intisari holds a unique place in Indonesian publishing history because it was the first publication of the enterprise that became Kompas Gramedia, one of Indonesia's largest media companies: the national newspaper Kompas, the Gramedia bookstores and the wider group all trace their origin to the small digest launched on 17 August 1963 by Petrus Kanisius Ojong and Jakob Oetama.

Founding on 17 August 1963

Intisari was first published on 17 August 1963 by Petrus Kanisius Ojong (1920–1980) and Jakob Oetama (1931–2020), with assistance from J. Adi Subrata and Irawati. Both founders had backgrounds as teachers, and the passion to enlighten the Indonesian people with credible knowledge that motivated them became the founding purpose of the whole Kompas Gramedia enterprise. Intisari was intended to open the horizons of Indonesian society. Its first edition had no cover, measured 14 by 17.5 centimetres, was printed in black and white, and ran to 128 pages. In its first publication, 17 August 1963 — Indonesian Independence Day — 11,000 copies were printed. The digest format was a deliberate choice for a new nation of readers: short, accessible articles gathered from wide reading, presented in a compact monthly that could be carried, kept and re-read, opening cakrawala, horizons, for a society with limited access to books and foreign publications.

The digest idea and Reader's Digest model

Intisari has a format similar to that of Reader's Digest, the American general-interest digest, and its own name states the concept directly: intisari is the essence or digest of a subject. As a general-interest monthly, it gathered knowledge, stories, inspiration and practical information across subjects rather than specialising in a single field, and it presented that material in digest length for general readers. Later editions of the magazine would reach 350,000 copies, a remarkable expansion from the 11,000 copies of the first printing, showing how completely the digest idea matched the appetite of Indonesian readers in the decades after independence. Jakob Oetama himself served as editor-in-chief for more than three decades, from 1963 to 1995, giving the magazine an unusually long founding editorship. The taglines of its later years expressed the same mission in modern language: Inspirasi Setiap Generasi, inspiration for every generation, from 2009 to 2011, and Smart and Inspiring from 2012 onward.

Seed of Kompas Gramedia

After the success of Intisari, released on 17 August 1963, Ojong and Oetama launched a national newspaper called Kompas, whose first issue was released on 28 June 1965. Kompas Gramedia itself dates its founding to 17 August 1963, the day Intisari appeared, and describes the magazine as the journey's beginning: the group's own history records that the journey began with Intisari magazine and was strengthened on 28 June 1965 with the birth of Kompas. From those two publications the enterprise grew into the largest media company in Indonesia, adding the Gramedia bookstore chain, publishing houses, printing networks, the Tribun newspaper network, radio, television and digital media, alongside hospitality, education and event businesses. Every account of the group's history therefore begins with Intisari: a 128-page, coverless, black-and-white monthly digest, produced by two former teachers with two assistants, became the seed from which a media conglomerate employing thousands grew over the following six decades. Intisari's own offices were based on Jalan Gelora VII in Tanah Abang, Jakarta, within the Kompas Gramedia publishing complex.

Editors and continuity

Intisari's editorial history is marked by long tenures. Jakob Oetama, co-founder, was editor-in-chief from 1963 to 1995. Liliek Oetama followed, serving from 1997 to 2013, and Mahandis Yoanata Thamrin led the magazine from 2014 to 2024, through its final print years and its transition to online-only publication. Three editors-in-chief across sixty-one years gave the digest a continuity of voice rare in magazine publishing: a general-interest monthly whose mission — credible knowledge, presented to enlighten — remained recognisably the founders' mission from the first issue to the last. The magazine was published monthly without change of frequency across its entire print life, from 1963 to 2024, in digest format, in Indonesian, carrying ISSN 0535-4900. It was published in its later years by Grid Network, Kompas Gramedia's subsidiary for magazines of specific interest and online media, after the group's media units were reorganised under KG Media.

Content and readership

As a general-interest digest, Intisari addressed the whole reader rather than a professional or hobbyist niche. Its online edition organises that breadth into sections including finance, career, unique stories, inspiration, wellness and travelling, reflecting the range the print digest had long covered: personal finance and work, health and wellbeing, travel, human interest and inspirational stories, and curious facts from Indonesia and the world. This breadth was the point of the digest model. A single monthly issue could move between practical knowledge and remarkable stories, written and condensed for readers who wanted to widen their horizons without specialist study. In its founding decades that offer mattered greatly in Indonesia, where the magazine's stated purpose was to open society's horizons, and its circulation growth to 350,000 copies showed the scale of the audience it reached. By 2024, in a media market transformed by free online content, its recorded circulation had fallen to 7,000, the end point of the long contraction of Indonesian print.

Final print issue in June 2024

The magazine published its last regular print issue in June 2024, issue number 741, ending a monthly print run that had lasted from August 1963 to June 2024. The June 2024 issue itself marked the transition, and Kompas reported in May 2024 on Intisari presenting information in digital form alongside special print editions. Print has not disappeared absolutely: Intisari in print form is still published in special editions and at certain moments. But the monthly magazine as a standing publication closed in June 2024, sixty-one years after the first coverless digest. The closure formed part of a wider pattern in Indonesian publishing in the same period, in which long-running Kompas Gramedia and other group titles ended regular print schedules as readers and advertisers completed their move to digital platforms.

Intisari online

Since 2024 Intisari has been an online-only medium, published at intisari.grid.id as part of Grid Network. The online version carries the digest tradition into digital form with its sections on finance, career, unique content, inspiration, wellness and travelling, under the Smart and Inspiring identity adopted in 2012. Owned by Kompas Gramedia through Grid Network, the brand remains attached to the group its founders created, and its digital archive and continuing publication preserve the name that began the group's history in 1963. The transition mirrors the founding logic of the magazine itself: Ojong and Oetama chose the digest format because it was the most accessible vessel for credible knowledge in 1963, and the move online applies the same accessibility principle to the medium Indonesian readers now use.

Historical significance

Intisari's significance is double. As a magazine, it was Indonesia's enduring general-interest digest, a monthly companion that for six decades condensed knowledge and stories for general readers, in the Reader's Digest tradition but in Indonesian and for Indonesian society, fulfilling its founders' aim of opening horizons. As an institution, it was the first publication of Kompas Gramedia, preceding Kompas newspaper by two years and anchoring the group's official founding date of 17 August 1963. Few magazines anywhere can claim to have founded a media empire; Intisari can. From 11,000 coverless copies in 1963 to a peak of 350,000, through 741 monthly print issues to its present online life at Grid Network, Intisari records both the rise of the Indonesian reading public and the transformation of the industry that public created.
