About ITV1
ITV1 is Britain's oldest commercial television channel and the flagship service of the ITV network. Launched on 22 September 1955 as Independent Television, it was created to break the BBC's monopoly and introduce advertising-funded broadcasting to the United Kingdom. For its first four decades it operated as a federal network of regional franchise companies — household names such as Granada, Thames, LWT and Central — before consolidation created the modern ITV plc, which now runs the channel across England, Wales, Southern Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. Known simply as ITV from 1963 to 2001 and again from 2013 to 2022, the channel reclaimed the ITV1 name in November 2022. Funded by advertising, it remains the BBC's great commercial rival and the home of some of the most-watched programmes in British television history.
History and Launch
ITV was born of the Television Act 1954, which ended the BBC's monopoly by creating the Independent Television Authority to license commercial television. The first broadcasts began on 22 September 1955 in the London region, operated by Associated-Rediffusion on weekdays and ATV at weekends, and the network gradually extended across the country as regional franchises were awarded. For decades ITV was not a single channel in the modern sense but a network of separate companies, each holding a regional franchise and contributing programmes to a shared national schedule. The franchise map was redrawn at intervals — most dramatically in the 1968 and 1991 franchise rounds — with famous names such as Thames Television, ABC and TV-am coming and going. A turning point came with the Broadcasting Act 1990, which gave the network the legal name Channel 3. Consolidation accelerated through the 1990s and 2000s, and in 2004 Granada plc merged with Carlton Communications to form ITV plc, which today holds the Channel 3 licences for thirteen of the fifteen ITV regions. The channel was branded ITV1 from 2001 to 2013 to distinguish it from new digital sister channels, reverted to ITV in 2013, and became ITV1 again on 15 November 2022 as part of a rebrand tied to the launch of the ITVX streaming service.
Ownership
ITV1 is owned and operated by ITV plc, the British media company formed by the 2004 merger of Granada and Carlton, through its subsidiary ITV Broadcasting Limited. ITV plc is a publicly listed company and one of the largest commercial broadcasters in Europe. It holds the Channel 3 broadcasting licences for every ITV region except central and northern Scotland, where the licences are held by STV Group, which broadcasts the STV channel instead of ITV1. ITV plc also owns the national breakfast-television licence, ITV Breakfast, which produces Good Morning Britain and Lorraine. Programme production is handled largely in-house by ITV Studios, the company's production arm — one of the biggest television producers in Britain — alongside commissions from independent production companies. Regional programming survives mainly in news and some current affairs, with the network schedule commissioned centrally.
Programming and Flagship Shows
ITV1's schedule is built on popular mainstream entertainment, and its biggest hits are among the most-watched shows on British television. The channel is the home of the nation's two most enduring soap operas: Coronation Street, set on the cobbles of Weatherfield and on air since 1960, making it the world's longest-running television soap opera, and Emmerdale, the Yorkshire-based rural soap. Entertainment blockbusters include Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor, the talent formats that dominated Saturday nights for years, while daytime is anchored by This Morning and the breakfast show Good Morning Britain. Drama landmarks have ranged from Downton Abbey to Broadchurch, and the channel has a strong tradition of crime drama, quiz shows such as Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and reality television including I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!. Major live events, from the Brit Awards to royal occasions, also feature prominently in the schedule.
News and Current Affairs
ITV1 carries national and international news through ITV News, produced by ITN, with the flagship ITV News at Ten having been a fixture of the schedule — on and off — since 1967, alongside lunchtime and evening bulletins. Regional news remains one of the channel's defining public-service commitments: each ITV region produces its own early-evening news magazine, such as ITV News London, Granada Reports and ITV News Meridian, preserving a local identity that dates back to the federal era. Current affairs programming includes the long-running Tonight strand of investigative and consumer journalism. During general elections, ITV1 broadcasts leaders' debates and a full results-night service to rival the BBC's. The breakfast hours are occupied by Good Morning Britain, produced under the ITV Breakfast licence, which mixes news, interviews and debate and has become a significant player in the morning news wars.
Audience and Ratings
ITV1 is traditionally the second most-watched television channel in the United Kingdom, behind BBC One, and the country's most-watched commercial channel. Its audience peaks around its biggest entertainment events: finales of Britain's Got Talent and I'm a Celebrity, major Coronation Street episodes and live football have all drawn audiences well into eight figures. The channel's commercial model means its value is measured in advertising revenue as much as ratings, and its mass-market schedule is designed to deliver the large, broad audiences advertisers prize. In recent years ITV1, like all linear channels, has faced audience fragmentation from streaming services, and the company has responded by making ITVX — its free, ad-supported streaming platform — the digital home of the channel's output, with many programmes premiering online before broadcast.
Broadcast and Streaming Availability
ITV1 is a free-to-air channel available throughout its broadcast area of England, Wales, Southern Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. On Freeview it occupies channel 3 in standard definition, channel 35 for the ITV1 +1 timeshift service, and channel 103 in high definition; it is also carried on Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat. (In central and northern Scotland, viewers receive STV in the equivalent slot.) The channel broadcasts in 1080i/1080p high definition. Live streaming and catch-up are available through ITVX, ITV's streaming service, which replaced the ITV Hub in December 2022 and offers the channel's programmes free with advertising, plus a premium ad-free subscription tier. Regional variations of the channel provide local news and advertising for each ITV region, a legacy of the network's federal origins.
Cultural Impact
ITV1's cultural footprint is enormous. Coronation Street has been part of British life for over six decades, its characters and storylines — from the Rovers Return to Ken Barlow — woven into the national consciousness. The channel's talent shows reshaped popular culture in the 2000s and 2010s, launching the careers of global stars and making Saturday-night appointment viewing a shared national ritual. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? became a worldwide format phenomenon, and I'm a Celebrity turned the Australian jungle into an annual British institution. ITV1 also changed the economics of British television: by proving that advertising-funded broadcasting could thrive alongside the BBC, it created the dual system — public and commercial — that still defines UK television. Its regional companies nurtured generations of broadcasting talent, from Granada's pioneering documentaries to Thames's comedy, leaving a legacy that outlived the franchise system itself.
Sister Channels
ITV1 is the flagship of ITV plc's portfolio of digital channels. Its sisters include ITV2, launched in December 1998 and aimed at younger audiences with entertainment, reality and comedy; ITV3, launched in November 2004, home to repeats of classic ITV dramas; ITV4, launched in November 2005, carrying sport, films and US drama; and ITV Quiz, the quiz-show channel launched in June 2025. Timeshift (+1) and high-definition simulcasts accompany the main services. The channels share programming and cross-promote heavily, with repeats and spin-offs flowing between ITV1 and its digital siblings. Together they form one of the largest channel families in British broadcasting, all ultimately funded by advertising and available free to air.
Recent Developments
The most significant recent development for ITV1 has been the company's pivot to streaming. In December 2022 ITV launched ITVX to replace the ITV Hub, positioning it as the digital destination for the channel's programmes, with exclusive premieres, box sets and a growing library of acquired content. The ITV1 rebrand of November 2022 unified the channel's identity with the new streaming service. ITV plc has increasingly positioned itself as a digital-first media company, investing in ITVX and in ITV Studios' international production business to offset the long-term decline in traditional television advertising. The channel continues to anchor its schedule around big entertainment events, live sport and its powerhouse soaps, while using ITVX to reach younger viewers who rarely watch linear television — a balancing act that will define ITV1's future as it moves towards its eightieth anniversary.
