About ITV2
ITV2 is Britain's best-known youth entertainment channel: the free-to-air home of Love Island, big American animations and a relentless stream of reality, comedy and entertainment programming aimed squarely at younger viewers. Launched in December 1998 as ITV's first major digital spin-off, it was created to give the ITV network a foothold in the emerging multichannel world and to attract the 16-to-34 audience that advertisers prize most. More than a quarter of a century later, it remains one of the most-watched digital channels in the UK and the flagship of ITV's family of spin-off services.
Owned by ITV plc and operated through ITV Digital Channels, ITV2 broadcasts from London and is available free-to-air on every major UK television platform, alongside a one-hour timeshift service, ITV2 +1. Its schedule mixes original British commissions — reality formats, comedy and entertainment — with acquired American programming and repeats from the main ITV channel, all wrapped in a brash, youthful on-screen identity that has been refreshed several times over the years.
History and Launch
ITV2 was launched on 7 December 1998 by Granada Television, Carlton Television and United News & Media, the major ITV companies of the era. The new channel was designed to expand the appeal of the ITV network in the face of growing competition from satellite, cable and the newly launched digital terrestrial television. Initially it broadcast only in England and Wales: in Scotland, Scottish Media Group used its digital capacity to launch its own service, S2, on 30 April 1999, while Ulster Television launched TV You (later UTV2) in Northern Ireland on 28 June 1999, offering similar programming tailored to their regions.
Both regional variants were short-lived. Under a deal with ITV Digital, S2 and UTV2 ceased broadcasting and were replaced by ITV2 itself — in Scotland on 27 July 2001 and in Northern Ireland on 22 January 2002 — giving the channel full UK coverage for the first time. On 11 August 2001, the main ITV channel was renamed ITV1 in the Granada and Carlton regions, cementing ITV2's position as the network's second channel.
The channel grew steadily through the 2000s. For a number of years it held the largest audience share of any channel beyond the five analogue terrestrial stations, a position later taken by its sister service ITV3. A major presentation refresh arrived on 12 August 2015, with new branding, idents and bite-sized promotional content designed for social media, alongside new ITV2 channels on Snapchat and Tumblr. In November 2022, ITV2 adopted refreshed branding as part of the wider ITV rebrand that accompanied the launch of the ITVX streaming service.
Ownership and Funding
ITV2 is owned by ITV plc, the British media company that operates the ITV network across most of the UK, and is run through its ITV Digital Channels division. ITV plc was formed in 2004 by the merger of Granada and Carlton, the two companies that had launched ITV2, and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Unlike the BBC's channels, ITV2 is a commercial service funded by advertising revenue.
The channel sits within ITV's portfolio of spin-off channels, which also includes ITV3, ITV4 and ITV Quiz, alongside timeshift and high-definition variants. ITV's broadcast and streaming business is complemented by ITV Studios, the international production and distribution arm that makes programmes for ITV's own channels and for broadcasters around the world. ITV2 benefits from this vertically integrated structure, with many of its biggest hits produced or distributed within the wider ITV group.
Programming and Flagship Shows
ITV2's schedule is built around entertainment for the 16-to-34 audience, blending original British formats with high-profile American acquisitions. Its defining programme is Love Island, the reality dating show that was revived on ITV2 in 2015 after its original run on ITV in the mid-2000s. The revival became a genuine cultural phenomenon, dominating social media conversation each summer, launching the careers of its contestants and delivering some of the largest audiences in multichannel television. Its spin-off, Love Island: Aftersun, became an ITV2 fixture in its own right.
In comedy, the channel's signature show was Celebrity Juice, the anarchic panel show hosted by Keith Lemon that ran from 2008 to 2022, alongside the sitcom Plebs, which followed three young men in ancient Rome from 2013 to 2019. The channel has also aired original reality formats including The Big Reunion, which brought together pop groups of the 1990s and 2000s, and, since 2023, the revived Big Brother, which moved to ITV2 and ITVX after its years on Channel 4 and Channel 5.
American programming has always been central to the channel's identity. Long-running acquisitions include the animated sitcoms Family Guy, American Dad! and Bob's Burgers, which anchor the channel's late-night and daytime schedules. In June 2022, ITV2 picked up a slate of American dramas for daytime, including re-runs of One Tree Hill, Hart of Dixie and The O.C., alongside the sports drama All American. The channel also carries repeats of recently aired ITV programmes, including the soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale and the game show Catchphrase, and the entertainment news bulletin FYI Daily, which airs a 60-second showbiz update between programmes. In November 2021, ITV2 moved into the true-crime genre with Social Media Murders, a three-part documentary series examining a different case each night.
Children's programming has also featured on the channel: following the closure of the CITV Channel in September 2023, the long-running CITV morning block moved to ITV2, airing from 5am to 9am daily, before being wound down in April 2026 in favour of an ITVX children's offering.
News and Current Affairs
As an entertainment channel, ITV2 carries no conventional news or current-affairs programming. Its closest brush with news content is FYI Daily, the channel's 60-second entertainment news bulletin, which delivers showbiz headlines in a fast, youthful style between programmes. Broader news coverage for ITV2 viewers is provided by ITV's main news services, including ITV News on the main channel and the ITVX streaming platform, which carries news content alongside entertainment.
The channel has occasionally ventured into documentary territory with social-issue resonance, notably the Social Media Murders true-crime series in 2021, which examined cases with a strong online dimension. But its remit remains firmly entertainment-first, and viewers seeking news and current affairs are directed to ITV's dedicated news output elsewhere in the portfolio.
Audience and Ratings
ITV2 is primarily aimed at the 16-to-34 age group, the demographic most coveted by advertisers and most contested among British broadcasters, putting it in direct competition with BBC Three and E4. For a number of years after its launch, it held the largest audience share of any channel beyond the five analogue terrestrial stations, a claim now held by its sister service ITV3, which skews older.
Love Island has been the engine of the channel's ratings success. The show's summer series have regularly delivered the biggest multichannel audiences of the year, with launch episodes and finals drawing several million viewers and generating enormous social media engagement. The channel's American animations, including Family Guy, provide a reliable bedrock of younger viewers in late-night slots.
ITV2 has been recognised by the industry for its success: it won Channel of the Year at the Broadcast Digital Awards in both 2007 and 2013. Its audiences are increasingly measured across broadcast and streaming, with ITVX catch-up and live streaming contributing significantly to total viewing of flagship shows.
Broadcast and Streaming Availability
ITV2 is available free-to-air across the United Kingdom on all major platforms. On Freeview it occupies channel 6 in standard definition, with the ITV2 +1 timeshift service on channel 29. It is also available on Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat, with high-definition variants on pay platforms.
The channel streams live on ITVX, ITV's free streaming service, which is available to UK viewers on smart TVs, mobile devices and the web. It is also available through Sky Go and Virgin TV Go for subscribers. ITV2 was launched on UPC Ireland in January 2010, marking its first official availability in the Republic of Ireland, though it was removed in April 2011 following the expiry of a carriage agreement. The channel is also available in Switzerland on Swisscom TV and UPC Cablecom, alongside ITV3 and ITV4.
Cultural Impact
Few channels have shaped British youth culture in the 21st century as decisively as ITV2. Love Island's revival on the channel turned a modest dating show into a national obsession, coining catchphrases, setting fashion trends and making household names of its contestants. The show's influence extended far beyond television, driving conversations about body image, mental health and the ethics of reality TV, and prompting ITV to introduce strengthened duty-of-care measures for participants.
Beyond Love Island, the channel has been a launchpad for comedy talent — Keith Lemon's Celebrity Juice made an anarchic, innuendo-laden style of panel show a mainstream proposition — and a key outlet for American animation in the UK, introducing generations of British teenagers to Family Guy and American Dad!. Its 2015 rebrand, with gif-style idents and a heavy social media presence, was an early example of a British broadcaster designing its identity for the smartphone era. The channel's tone — playful, irreverent and unapologetically commercial — has defined the sound of British youth television for two decades.
Sister Channels
ITV2 is part of ITV's family of digital channels. Its sister services include ITV1, the flagship network channel; ITV3, which focuses on drama repeats and films for an older audience and now outranks ITV2 in audience share; ITV4, the home of sport, cult films and US drama; and ITV Quiz, the gameshow repeat channel launched in June 2025. Each channel is supported by a +1 timeshift service, and most have high-definition variants.
The channels work as a portfolio: repeats of ITV1's soaps and entertainment shows air on ITV2, drama series find second runs on ITV3, and sports and action content sits on ITV4. All are available to stream live and on demand through ITVX, which has become the digital home of the entire ITV channel family.
Recent Developments
The most significant recent development for ITV2 has been its integration into ITVX, the streaming service ITV launched in December 2022 to replace ITV Hub. ITVX carries ITV2's live stream alongside box sets and exclusive content, and flagship shows such as Love Island and Big Brother premiere episodes on the platform, reflecting the shift of young audiences toward streaming.
In November 2022, ITV2 adopted new branding as part of a network-wide refresh, aligning its on-screen identity with the ITVX era. The channel continues to invest in original reality and entertainment formats, with Big Brother's move to ITV2 in 2023 marking the biggest commissioning coup in its recent history. The CITV morning block's move to the channel in 2023 and its subsequent wind-down in 2026 reflected the broader industry migration of children's content to streaming. As linear television audiences fragment, ITV2's future lies in its dual role as a broadcast channel and a content brand within ITVX — still the home of Love Island summers, still chasing the youth audience, but increasingly watched on demand.
