About Jaihind TV

Overview

Jaihind TV is a Malayalam-language free-to-air television channel broadcasting a mix of news and entertainment programming from its headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Owned by Bharat Broadcasting Network Limited, the channel was launched on 17 August 2007 by Sonia Gandhi, then president of the Indian National Congress and chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, at a ceremony in New Delhi. It is promoted by the Indian National Congress with the support of non-resident Indian investors, and it is widely identified as the Congress-backed counterpoint to the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-aligned Kairali TV in Kerala's politically charged broadcast landscape. The channel transmits in 576i standard-definition format and is available across India via satellite, cable and direct-to-home platforms, with an official web presence at jaihindtv.in.

The channel's founding premise was a blend of television news and general entertainment — an infotainment model aimed at giving Kerala viewers a third major option alongside the established private networks. From its launch, Jaihind TV committed to a substantial news operation, with seven scheduled news bulletins in its daily line-up, supplemented by programmes for children, women and young people. Over the years it has become a fixture of the Malayalam news scene, alongside the Jaihind TV Awards it organises, even as its political ownership has kept it at the centre of debates about party-owned media in India.

Ownership and Corporate Structure

Jaihind TV is owned by Bharat Broadcasting Network Limited (BBNL), a company incorporated by a group of Kerala businessmen with the backing of the Congress party. The channel is jointly run by BBNL and Jaihind Communications. At the time of the launch, Dubai-based non-resident Indian entrepreneur Aniyan Kutty — also rendered as Aniyankutty — was identified as the channel's chairman and its major stakeholder, reported to have invested Rs 100 million of an initial project outlay of around Rs 550 million. Vijayan Thomas, another Dubai-based businessman, chaired BBNL itself. The stated funding model was private investment from business circles close to the Congress rather than direct party finance, though the party's moral support and political involvement were openly acknowledged from the beginning.

The channel's leadership has included several senior Congress figures from Kerala. Ramesh Chennithala, former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president and Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, has served as chairman of the channel. M. M. Hassan, a former Kerala minister and official spokesman of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, has held the office of managing director, while B. S. Shiju has served as joint managing director. On the editorial side, K. P. Mohanan served as chief executive officer and J. S. Indukumar, formerly of Asianet, as executive editor of news. This combination of professional television management and political oversight has defined the channel's character since its inception.

Launch and Early History

The idea of Jaihind TV predates its 2007 launch by some time. The channel was initially targeted for the 2006 Kerala Assembly elections, but the project did not go on air in time for that campaign and its launch was deferred. It eventually went on air on 17 August 2007, with Sonia Gandhi formally inaugurating the service in New Delhi. Business Standard reported in June 2007 that the channel would join the Kerala channel war — a competitive Malayalam television market already populated by Asianet, Surya TV, Kairali TV and the news channel Indiavision, among others.

The pre-launch announcements described a channel based in Thiruvananthapuram with a deliberate balance of news and entertainment content. Aniyan Kutty told the press that the channel would be "a 100 per cent neutral channel with the right mix of news and entertainment," arguing that moral support from the Congress and investment from party-linked businessmen did not make it a propaganda tool. He said the venture would be run by professional management like any other channel. The launch coverage also noted plans to roll out additional regional-language channels beyond Malayalam, though the timeframe for that expansion was never finalised publicly. There were also press questions about whether actor Mohanlal would play an advisory role comparable to Mammootty's chairmanship of Kairali TV; Kutty said Mohanlal had no role in the channel and was only a well-wisher.

Political Context: The Congress Answer to Kairali TV

Jaihind TV was conceived explicitly as the Congress's answer to Kairali TV, the Malayalam channel promoted by the CPI(M) through Malayalam Communications Limited. Media coverage at the time of the launch framed it in precisely those terms — "Cong's Jaihind TV to join Kerala channel war," as Business Standard put it — and the rivalry between the two party-linked broadcasters has persisted throughout the channel's life. Kerala's television market is unusual in India for the depth of political ownership of news outlets: the Congress-aligned Jaihind TV, the CPI(M)-aligned Kairali TV network, the Muslim League-linked MediaOne TV, the BJP-aligned Janam TV and the Indian Union Muslim League-linked Chandrika interests have all competed for the state's viewers, making Malayalam news one of the most politically segmented television markets in the country.

The Congress's association with the channel was never a secret. Sonia Gandhi's inauguration of the service in Delhi gave it a national-level launch, and senior Congress leaders have remained on its board and in its management. In August 2015, senior Congress leader and former Union minister A. K. Antony publicly said the party was seriously considering launching a national television channel and was in talks with Jaihind TV about converting it into a national service. Antony argued that despite being the oldest democratic force in the country, the Congress was lagging behind in modern communication systems and unable to counter what he called false propaganda, and he pointed to Jaihind TV as an existing asset that could be scaled up. At that time, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president V. M. Sudheeran was identified as the president of Jaihind TV.

Programming

Jaihind TV's schedule combines rolling news with entertainment and special-interest programming. At launch the channel announced seven news bulletins through the broadcast day, a substantial news commitment for a new entrant, and programmes aimed at children, women and young viewers. Its line-up has included daily news shows, current-affairs debates, interview programmes and entertainment content typical of the Malayalam infotainment format — film-based shows, cultural programmes and talk shows alongside the news cycle.

The channel also runs the Jaihind TV Awards, an awards property recognising Malayalam film and television talent — the fifth edition of the awards was announced in the press, following earlier editions that have helped the channel build relationships with the entertainment industry. Like other Malayalam channels, Jaihind TV has had to balance the demands of a news operation with the commercial realities of entertainment programming, and its schedule reflects that dual identity: serious news blocks in the morning and evening, with lighter entertainment and film content through the rest of the day.

The 2015 Off-Air Suspension

In April 2015, Jaihind TV was taken off air for a day, an episode that drew national media attention because of the circumstances behind it. Press reports described the blackout as coming three years after the channel had aired an adult movie — a programming lapse that had attracted regulatory and public scrutiny. The one-day suspension was widely reported as a punishment connected to that incident, and the episode became one of the most widely discussed moments in the channel's history, illustrating the regulatory risks that face Indian broadcasters over content compliance.

The incident did not alter the channel's ownership or editorial direction, and it resumed broadcasting after the suspension. But it remains a reference point in discussions of the channel, and of the broader question of content standards on Indian television news and entertainment channels.

Availability and Reach

Jaihind TV is a free-to-air channel available across India. It is carried on major direct-to-home and cable platforms and reaches viewers throughout Kerala as well as the Malayali diaspora in the rest of India. Its broadcast area is listed as India, and it transmits in 576i standard-definition picture format. The channel's availability on multiple distribution platforms has given it a stable footprint even as the Malayalam market has become more crowded with new news-channel launches in the 2010s and 2020s.

As a free-to-air service, the channel relies on advertising revenue and the financial support of its promoters rather than subscription income. This is the standard model for party-linked Indian news channels, which typically prioritise reach and political visibility over subscription revenue.

Online Presence

The channel's official website is www.jaihindtv.in, where viewers can find programme information and channel updates. Jaihind TV also maintains a presence on social media, including an official Facebook page, and its news content circulates on digital platforms. Like other Malayalam broadcasters, it has adapted to the shift of news consumption toward mobile and online video, though its core business remains linear television broadcasting.

Editorial Standing

Jaihind TV presents itself as a neutral news-and-entertainment channel run by professional management, a claim its promoters have made since before the launch. In practice, its ownership and board-level leadership by senior Congress figures mean it is universally described in Indian media as the Congress-backed Malayalam channel — a political identity the channel has never sought to hide. Its coverage of Kerala politics is watched closely by rivals and by the party's own critics, and the channel's fortunes have tended to track the Congress's political standing in the state.

Within the crowded Malayalam news market, Jaihind TV occupies a distinctive position: older than the 2010s wave of new Malayalam news channels such as MediaOne TV, Twenty Four and News18 Kerala, but younger than the pioneers Asianet News, Indiavision and Kairali's People TV. Its survival for nearly two decades in one of India's most competitive regional television markets is itself a measure of the durability of politically backed broadcasting in Kerala.
