About Jalopnik

Jalopnik is an automotive news and car-culture website covering cars, the automotive industry, motorsports, motorcycles, aviation and transportation technology. Founded in October 2004 by Gawker Media with journalist Mike Spinelli as its founding editor, it set out to be an alternative to traditional automotive journalism — irreverent, conversational and written for enthusiasts rather than industry insiders. Over two decades it passed through the same corporate journey as its Gawker Media siblings: Univision's Gizmodo Media Group in 2016, G/O Media under private equity ownership in 2019, and, in late 2024, a sale to the Indianapolis-based digital publisher Static Media, finalized in early 2025. It remains one of the most distinctive voices in American automotive media.

Founding and early years

Jalopnik was founded in October 2004 as part of Nick Denton's network of weblogs, with Mike Spinelli serving as the founding editor. It was established to provide an alternative voice to traditional automotive journalism, and it quickly gained a following for its irreverent take on car news and culture. Where the established car magazines wrote with technical formality and maintained cozy relationships with manufacturers, Jalopnik wrote like enthusiasts talking in a garage: funny, opinionated and unafraid to mock the industry it covered. The site's own lore recalls its earliest days with characteristic self-deprecation — including the detail that it was once, briefly, sponsored exclusively by Audi. By the time the site hit its stride, it had become the largest automotive community website on the internet. Spinelli, the site's founding editor, remained closely associated with Jalopnik's identity long after his tenure, later appearing as a host on the /DRIVE automotive video channel — a fitting second act for the man who had invented the automotive blog voice. The site's own retrospectives, written with its trademark irreverence, have chronicled its many redesigns over the years, each one greeted with reader outrage and each one survived.

Editorial voice and audience

The site's About page describes Jalopnik as a news and opinion website about cars, the automotive industry, racing, transportation, airplanes, technology, motorcycles and much more, covered with what it calls "honesty, transparency, and cheerful belligerence that can't be found anywhere else." Its content is written with consumers, gearheads and casual enthusiasts in mind. Whether publishing an expert automotive review or a sharp take on autonomous-vehicle technology, the site aims its writing at readers who love machines — from vintage superbikes to modern jet fighters. The hallmark of its editorial approach is a casual, witty tone: straightforward news reporting sits alongside vehicle reviews, buying guides and opinion pieces, and the coverage regularly extends beyond cars themselves into motorcycles, racing, aviation and transportation technology.

Signature features

Jalopnik publishes a mix of news, reviews, buying guides and opinion, anchored by a set of long-running reader favorites. Among the best known is "Nice Price or No Dice," a crowd-sourced valuation series in which readers weigh in on whether a used car's asking price is fair. Regular vehicle reviews and motorsport coverage form the backbone of the site, while opinion writing — often sharply critical of manufacturers, regulators and industry trends — gives it its distinctive edge. The site's commentariat has historically been one of the most active and knowledgeable in automotive media, and Jalopnik cultivated that community deliberately, treating reader expertise as part of the editorial product.

The Jalopnik Film Festival

In 2013, Jalopnik launched the Jalopnik Film Festival, a film festival focused on automotive cinema and culture. The inaugural festival featured exotic vehicle exhibitions and panel discussions with cinematographers, directors and automotive enthusiasts. Ron Howard's Formula 1 film Rush was screened at the festival one week before its general theatrical release — a coup that demonstrated the site's pull within car culture. Later editions were held in New York City, Los Angeles and Williamsburg, turning the festival into a recurring celebration of the intersection between cars and film.

The Univision years

In 2016, following the bankruptcy of Gawker Media — forced by the $140 million damages award in the Hulk Hogan privacy lawsuit — Jalopnik was acquired by Univision Communications for $135 million along with the other former Gawker sites, and was reorganized into the newly created Gizmodo Media Group. Under Univision's ownership, Jalopnik continued to operate alongside sister sites such as Gizmodo, Deadspin and Jezebel. The site retained its voice and its audience through the transition, continuing to publish its mix of news, reviews and opinion as the corporate parent pursued its ultimately short-lived strategy of building an English-language digital media portfolio.

The G/O Media era

In April 2019, Univision sold the Gizmodo Media Group to the private equity firm Great Hill Partners, which formed G/O Media under CEO Jim Spanfeller. Jalopnik operated under G/O Media for more than five years, a period that saw the parent company sell off its portfolio piece by piece — Lifehacker, Jezebel, Deadspin, The A.V. Club and The Onion all departed between 2023 and 2024. Through the turmoil, Jalopnik kept publishing, and its editorial leadership turned over through a series of editors: after Spinelli came Matt Hardigree, Ray Wert, Patrick George, Erin Marquis and Rory Carroll, each shaping the site's voice in turn.

Sale to Static Media

In late 2024, G/O Media sold Jalopnik to Static Media, an Indianapolis-based digital publishing company; the acquisition was finalized in early 2025. The move brought Jalopnik under a publisher whose portfolio is built around enthusiast content, and the site's operations are now anchored in the Midwest — its official address is listed as 11787 Lantern Road #201, Fishers, Indiana 46038. The current full-time staff includes editors Erin Marquis and Daniel Golson, along with staff writers Logan Carter, Amber DaSilva, Andy Kalmowitz, Ryan Erik King and Collin Woodard, working alongside long-time regular contributors such as Brad Brownell, Rob Emslie and Tom McParland.

Community and commentariat

Jalopnik's readers have always been part of the product. The site cultivated one of the most knowledgeable comment sections in automotive media, where engineers, mechanics, racers and obsessives debated everything from suspension geometry to industry gossip. Features like "Nice Price or No Dice" formalized that relationship, turning the audience's collective judgment into content. This community-first approach — treating readers as contributors rather than just traffic — helped the site survive corporate upheavals that might have killed a less engaged publication, and it remains central to Jalopnik's identity under Static Media.

A no-AI writing policy

Jalopnik has taken a public stand on one of the defining questions facing digital media in the 2020s: the use of artificial intelligence in journalism. The site's About page states plainly that all content on Jalopnik is written exclusively by human writers, and that AI-generated articles are neither accepted nor published — linking to a full No-AI Writing Policy. The same page sets out the site's ownership and funding information and its policies on advertising, ethics, fact-checking and corrections, and warns readers about fraudulent recruitment scams impersonating its hiring team. In an era when much of the web's automotive content is increasingly machine-generated, the policy is both an editorial statement and a selling point.

Place in automotive media

Two decades after its founding, Jalopnik occupies a distinctive position in American automotive journalism. The traditional car magazines still exist, and a crowded field of blogs, YouTube channels and manufacturer-backed outlets now competes for enthusiast attention — but few combine Jalopnik's mix of daily industry news, hands-on reviews, motorsport coverage and openly opinionated writing. Its journey from a Gawker Media blog to a Univision asset to a private-equity holding to an independent enthusiast publisher mirrors the convulsions of digital media as a whole. Through it all, the site has kept the voice Mike Spinelli gave it in 2004: funny, knowledgeable and cheerfully belligerent. The official website is at jalopnik.com.
