About Java aktuell

Java aktuell

Java aktuell – Das iJUG Magazin is the user magazine for the Java programming language in the German-speaking world: published by the community's own Interessenverbund der Java User Groups e.V. (iJUG), the magazine has served the Java developers since 2010. Appearing quarterly with around 68 pages in DIN A4, Java aktuell delivers the technical articles from the Java topic cosmos and the soft-skills contributions: written by experienced Java users, specialists, and designated experts, under the motto "von der Community für die Community" (from the community for the community), for every level.

Overview

Java aktuell appears four times per year as the Java community's magazine: the user magazine for the programming language Java in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the DACH region's Java developers. The editorial program delivers the technical articles from the entire Java cosmos: the language features, the frameworks, the tools, and the architectures, plus the soft-skills topics for the developers' professional growth and career development. The articles target primarily the developers, but the broad topic field spans every level: beginners and advanced practitioners both get their money's worth, from the first steps to the deep dives.

The magazine's positioning is the community's independence: independent of Oracle, the magazine represents neither directly nor indirectly Oracle's economic interests, a rare stance in the Java ecosystem. Instead it represents the users' interests in the topics around the Java products, promotes the knowledge exchange between the readers, and informs about the new products and technologies that shape the developers' everyday. The format: DIN A4, around 68 pages, total circulation 10,000, purchase price 7.95 euros, distributed to the iJUG and DOAG members and in the retail trade, quarterly, since 2010.

The Java Community

The Java community that Java aktuell serves is the German-speaking world's Java developers: the enterprise developers building the business applications, the open-source contributors shaping the ecosystem, and the architects designing the systems. The community's user groups, over 40 in the iJUG, meet regularly: the JUGs from Augsburg to Thüringen, from the Lightweight JUG München to the JUG Switzerland, sharing the knowledge and the code.

The magazine speaks to this community: the articles written by the practitioners for the practitioners, the technical depth that the developers respect, and the independence that the community trusts. The Java ecosystem's corporate reality makes the independence precious: Oracle's stewardship of the Java trademark and the JDK commercialization create the tensions that the community's magazine navigates. The magazine represents the users' interests: the developers who write the Java, not the corporations that own it.

History

Java aktuell's history begins in 2010: the iJUG e.V., in which the DOAG (Deutsche Oracle-Anwendergruppe) is a member, published the magazine to give the constantly growing group of Java users their own independent platform. The Interessenverbund der Java User Groups e.V., uniting the Java user groups in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland under one roof, became the publisher: the community's own magazine, by the developers, for the developers.

The magazine's development tracked the Java ecosystem's evolution: from the Java EE to the Jakarta EE, from the monoliths to the microservices, from the Oracle JDK to the OpenJDK distributions, always with the community's perspective. The iJUG's membership grew to over 40 user groups: from the JUG Berlin-Brandenburg to the JUG Switzerland, from the Android User Group Düsseldorf to the Kotlin User Group Düsseldorf, a vibrant community. The 2026 issues are scheduled: 01/26 on February 13, 2026, through 04/26 on November 6, 2026, four issues of the community's knowledge, every quarter.

Coverage and Content

The technical coverage addresses the Java cosmos: the language's new features, the frameworks like Spring and Quarkus, the build tools, the testing practices, and the architectures from the monolith to the microservices. The open-source coverage presents the current projects: the community's innovations, from the established frameworks to the emerging libraries, reviewed by the practitioners. The product coverage addresses the ecosystem: the application servers, the development tools, and the related products.

The soft-skills coverage addresses the developers' growth: the communication, the teamwork, and the career. The problem-solution format serves the readers: the editorial presents the interesting solutions and forwards them to the manufacturer. The community coverage addresses the user groups: the meetings, the conferences, and the knowledge exchange.

The Community for the Community

The "von der Community für die Community" is the magazine's principle: the experienced Java users, the specialists, and the designated experts write the articles. The editorial board (Redaktionsbeirat) includes the community's names: Andreas Badelt, Melanie Feldmann, Markus Karg, Manuel Mauky, Bernd Müller, Benjamin Nothdurft, Daniel van Ross, André Sept, and others. The layout, design, and typesetting by the DOAG Dienstleistungen GmbH professionalize the community's content.

The independence from Oracle is the magazine's credibility: in the Java world where Oracle's commercial interests shape the ecosystem, the community's magazine represents the users. The iJUG's 40+ member groups are the readership and the authorship: the magazine is the community's platform. The retail distribution extends the reach: the newsstand buyers discovering the community.

The Technical Depth

The technical depth that Java aktuell delivers is the practitioners' knowledge: the articles that the experienced Java users write from their real projects. The language features' coverage explains the new: the records, the pattern matching, and the virtual threads, with the code examples that the readers can run. The frameworks' coverage compares the options: the Spring's maturity, the Quarkus's speed, and the Micronaut's efficiency. The architectures' coverage guides the decisions: the monolith's simplicity, the microservices' scalability, and the modular monolith's compromise.

The soft-skills' coverage complements the technical: the developers are not just coders, but professionals. The communication, the teamwork, and the career topics address the human side: the code reviews' etiquette, the meetings' efficiency, and the burnout's prevention. The magazine's broad topic field spans every level: the beginners learning the basics, the advanced mastering the intricacies. In the profession where the learning never stops, the magazine is the companion: the quarterly depth in the daily-change world.

Organization and Ownership

Java aktuell is published by the Interessenverbund der Java User Groups e.V. (iJUG), Tempelhofer Weg 64, 12347 Berlin. It is published (verlegt) by the DOAG Dienstleistungen GmbH, Berlin, legally represented by the managing director Fried Saacke. The business model is the community-publishing model: the membership distribution, the retail sales (4.90–7.95 euros), and the sponsoring (sponsoring@doag.org).

Digital Presence

The java-aktuell.eu website is the digital home: the magazine's presence with the current issues. The ijug.eu website presents the association: the 40+ member user groups. The DOAG's media data (doag.org/go/mediadaten) presents the advertising: the formats, the circulation, and the 2026 schedule. The retail listings (meine-zeitschrift.de) sell the single issues.

For the Java developers in the German-speaking world, Java aktuell is the community's magazine: the quarterly publication with the technical articles from the Java cosmos and the soft-skills contributions, written by the experienced users, specialists, and experts under the motto "from the community for the community," independent of Oracle. Since 2010, through the Java EE to Jakarta EE, the monoliths to the microservices, and the Oracle JDK to the OpenJDK, the magazine has served the users: the platform for the constantly growing group of Java developers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, into the future, without compromise, every quarter, always, without fail, today.
