About JD Live

JD Live

JD Live is the live streaming commerce service of JD.com, the Beijing-based e-commerce company also known as Jingdong. Through JD Live, merchants, brands and JD.com's own procurement-and-sales teams broadcast product presentations inside the JD app, demonstrating goods, answering questions in real time and selling directly from the stream. Unlike China's entertainment-led live platforms, which rely heavily on celebrity hosts and multi-channel network agencies, JD Live has been characterised by its use of insiders: JD's own procurement and sales staff, who know product specifications, pricing and logistics in detail, frequently act as hosts. That model is especially suited to the categories where JD.com is strongest, including consumer electronics, home appliances and smart home devices, and it reflects the parent company's reputation for supply chain and fulfilment quality.

Place within JD.com

JD.com is one of China's largest e-commerce companies, and live streaming on the platform is not a standalone media business but a sales channel embedded in a retail operation. Reporting by WARC, drawing on the South China Morning Post, noted as early as February 2018 that both Alibaba's Taobao marketplace and JD.com had integrated live streaming platforms allowing merchants or influencers to market products close to the point of purchase. The comparison made at the time was with American home shopping channels, except that viewers could engage with merchants and have questions answered live. For JD, fulfilment and customer care provided by the company itself were part of the offer: when JD later extended its live selling through partners, it retained responsibility for delivery and after-sales service, using its logistics network as a differentiator against purely content-driven rivals.

How JD Live broadcasts work

Analysis of China's live streaming commerce sector describes JD Live as focused on tech-savvy, high-intent shoppers looking for quality and speed rather than on social entertainment. Streams typically feature brand representatives or JD procurement-and-sales staff explaining product specifications and responding to real-time questions. This expert-led format contrasts with the key opinion leader model used elsewhere. JD.com has made live streaming a standard expectation for its merchants, and the service operates inside the JD app alongside short video and image-and-text content, which JD.com said in 2021 it would combine into a new content ecosystem. Because the hosts are often the same teams that source and price the products, JD has promoted its procurement-and-sales live rooms on a model described in Chinese reporting as involving no placement fees and no talent commissions, a pitch aimed at both consumers, on price, and brands, on cost.

Partnership with Kuaishou

JD Live's reach was extended beyond JD's own app through a partnership with the live streaming and short video platform Kuaishou. The relationship dated back to June 2019, when Kuaishou announced that its users could view JD products in the Kuaishou app but were redirected to JD to complete purchases. In May 2020 the two companies took the partnership further, enabling in-app shopping within livestreams. From 16 June 2020, Kuaishou's 300 million daily active users were able to purchase selected JD products directly in the Kuaishou app, with fulfilment and customer care provided by JD, which also supplied consumer behaviour insights to improve marketing. Kuaishou chief executive Su Hua said at the announcement that short video live streaming in e-commerce had been developing rapidly since the beginning of that year. Around 100 well-known Chinese key opinion leaders promoted JD.com products on Kuaishou during the 2021 mid-year shopping festival under the arrangement.

Live streaming during the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic turned JD Live from a promotional tool into a lifeline for merchants cut off from their customers. In an interview with eMarketer in June 2020, Ella Kidron, a senior manager of global corporate affairs at JD.com, described how brands and local government officials turned to live streaming to promote goods and services when physical retail was disrupted. JD helped florists provide courses on flower arrangement and helped bookstores market book titles to quarantined consumers. The company collaborated with Taihe Music Group on an online clubbing event, in which a DJ played music in a virtual club setting to promote products from brand partners; the initiative proved so popular that sessions were extended beyond the original schedule and beyond the alcoholic beverage category. JD applied the same format to culture, running a virtual museum tour combined with promotions for the museum store on JD.com. Kidron presented these as examples of practices that began as pandemic solutions but became long-term features of brand-consumer connection.

Shopping festivals and growth figures

JD Live's biggest tests came during China's shopping festivals. For its June 18 anniversary celebration in 2020, JD planned more than 300,000 livestreams involving celebrities and brand executives on its own live streaming platform JD Live as well as on Kuaishou, Douyin's parent ecosystem and other platforms. Growth figures reported for the Double 12 festival, which ran from 1 to 13 December in the year reported by Dao Insights, showed sales generated from JD Live and JD's live streaming platform increasing tenfold year on year, with the live streaming audience more than 16 times larger than during the previous year's event and the number of merchants participating in JD live streaming up by 280 percent. The three most popular live stream categories in that festival were consumer goods, home appliances and home furnishing, reflecting rising demand for home redecoration and furnishing. The broader market context cited at the time, from Nielsen, expected China's live streaming e-commerce market to reach 961 billion yuan by the end of 2020.

Content ecology as a strategic priority

By 2024 JD.com had elevated content to a company-level priority. Chinese business reporting described content ecology as one of three must-win battles proposed by JD.com for 2024. On 10 April 2024 JD.com announced that it would invest 1 billion yuan in cash and 1 billion yuan worth of traffic incentives to attract original creators and high-quality content institutions to the platform, with the stated aim of giving users a better consumer experience through high-quality content and helping brand merchants find new growth points. Reporting on the programme said JD was preparing to incubate top talents, planned to select a top 100 by the end of the year, had invested hundreds of millions of yuan at the reserve talent stage, and had set an institutional incentive list of up to 5 million yuan for a single institution. The investment signalled that JD, historically a shelf-based retailer driven by search and logistics, intended to compete for the creator-driven traffic that Douyin and Taobao Live had pioneered.

The digital human debut of Liu Qiangdong

The most publicised JD Live event came days after that investment announcement. At 6:18 p.m. on 16 April 2024, an AI digital human modelled on JD.com founder and chairman Liu Qiangdong made its live broadcast debut simultaneously in the JD Supermarket and JD Home Appliances live broadcast rooms on the JD app. The avatar, calling itself the procurement-and-sales Brother Dong digital human, was built by JD's Yanxi team using the company's self-developed AI-driven large-model digital human technology, and was presented as the industry's first digital human live broadcast by a company founder of that stature. The clean-file summary for this profile records that the broadcasts drew more than 20 million views in under an hour. More detailed Chinese reporting put the 40-minute broadcast's live room viewers at over 13 million, a record peak for the JD Supermarket live room, with overall orders in the live room exceeding 100,000, average viewer stay at 5.6 times the daily average, 13 products explained and total turnover for the full broadcast exceeding 50 million yuan. During the debut the avatar also announced a 10 billion yuan agricultural subsidy project by JD Supermarket, planned over three years.

Digital humans and the Yanxi system

The Liu Qiangdong broadcast was a showcase for a wider digital human operation. JD's Yanxi large model had been connected to products including virtual anchors and intelligent outbound calls, and JD reported that the cost of a Yanxi virtual anchor was less than one tenth that of a real presenter, with daily operating input as low as under 30 minutes. Yanxi digital humans and real anchors had relayed shifts to create a live broadcast room described as the Sun Never Sets, driving more than 1 billion yuan in gross merchandise volume. By the time of the founder's debut, JD Yunyanxi digital humans had settled into JD's procurement-and-sales live rooms and were serving more than 4,000 brands. The technology later became a merchant tool in its own right: after JD opened its full digital live streaming feature free of charge on 2 December in the year reported by Zhitong Finance, the number of registered merchants using it surpassed 10,000 within 10 days, which JD framed as a zero-cost route for merchants to begin live streaming operations.

Competition and positioning

JD Live operates in a market defined by larger entertainment platforms. Taobao Live built a complete ecology of talent anchors and merchant self-broadcasting by 2020 and remained the largest player in live streaming e-commerce in 2019, according to market summaries, while Kuaishou developed family-style anchor teams and Douyin used celebrity broadcasts to set benchmarks. JD's answer has been differentiation rather than imitation: procurement-and-sales hosts instead of external influencers, logistics and after-sales guarantees instead of pure content, and, from 2024, AI digital humans operating at a fraction of human presenter cost. Industry commentary summarised the positioning succinctly, describing JD Live under the heading Logistics Meets Livestream and noting that it is not as socially driven as Douyin or Taobao but converts high purchase intent effectively, particularly for electronics, appliances and smart home devices where specifications and trust matter more than entertainment.

Assessment

JD Live's record is documented less through standalone user statistics, which JD.com rarely publishes for the service alone, than through a sequence of verifiable milestones: integration of merchant live streaming by 2018, the two-stage Kuaishou partnership of 2019 and 2020, pandemic-era programming with florists, bookstores, musicians and museums, tenfold Double 12 live sales growth with a sixteenfold audience increase, and the April 2024 commitment of 1 billion yuan in cash plus 1 billion in traffic capped by the founder's digital human broadcast. Taken together they show a retailer steadily converting live video from a marketing accessory into core sales infrastructure, first with human procurement teams, then with partner platforms, and most recently with AI presenters modelled on the company's own founder. JD Live remains a component of JD.com rather than an independent platform, but within China's live commerce industry it is the clearest example of the model in which the broadcaster, the merchant and the delivery company are the same firm.
