About Jiangxi Daily

Jiangxi Daily

Jiangxi Daily, known in Chinese as Jiangxi Ribao, is the official newspaper of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, published in Chinese in Nanchang by Jiangxi Daily Press. It was founded on 7 June 1949, with a masthead written personally by Mao Zedong, and its circulation is recorded at 200,000 copies. From September 1984 it was distributed overseas as well as across Jiangxi. The newspaper is the flagship of a provincial press institution whose subsidiaries include the Jiangnan Metropolis Daily, the market-leading metropolitan paper of Jiangxi; the Information Daily, founded in 1984 as China's first comprehensive information daily; and the Dajiang Network, the group's news portal whose government-supervision platform has twice been written into the Jiangxi provincial government work report. In 2018 the paper was named to the national list of China's top 100 newspapers for 2017. Its headquarters are in the Jiangxi Daily Press News Building at 190 Yangming Road, Nanchang.

Identity and Role as the Provincial Party Organ

Jiangxi Daily is formally the organ newspaper of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, and its publishing unit is Jiangxi Daily Press. Chinese newspaper directories catalogue it as a provincial party organ with domestic series number CN 36-0001 — the first registration in Jiangxi's newspaper series — and postal distribution code 43-1, published daily for distribution from Nanchang across the province. Directory descriptions summarise its remit in the standard terms of a party organ: it works around the central tasks of the provincial party committee and provincial government in each period, publicises the party's principles and policies in close combination with Jiangxi's actual conditions, guides social life, reflects the voices of the people and provides readers with the latest information on many fronts. Academic media research likewise classifies it without ambiguity: the American Economic Association's media-bias appendix for China lists Jiangxi Daily as a province-level party daily published in Nanchang, and reference tables of Communist Party newspapers name the Jiangxi Provincial Committee as its owner. It describes itself, in its own institutional phrasing, as a newspaper rooted in Jiangxi's "red land" — the province of the Jinggangshan base area and the Ruijin Soviet.

Founding on 7 June 1949 and Mao Zedong's Masthead

Jiangxi Daily was founded on 7 June 1949, in the weeks after the People's Liberation Army crossed the Yangtze and took Nanchang, and some four months before the proclamation of the People's Republic. Like several of the provincial party papers founded in that season — Zhejiang Daily on 9 May, Henan Daily on 1 June and Hunan Daily in August — it was created as the incoming provincial party committee's first institution of public record. Its masthead, the four characters "Jiangxi Daily", was written personally by Mao Zedong, a fact recorded in every standard account of the paper, from Chinese Wikipedia's entry to provincial newspaper directories. Mao mastheads were conferred on only a selection of the new party newspapers, and the inscription placed the Nanchang paper in that distinguished company from its first issue. The founding details are consistent across the Gan-language and Chinese-language reference entries and the directory record, which agree on the date, the publisher and the calligraphy. The newspaper has been published from Nanchang, the provincial capital on the Gan River, throughout its existence.

Circulation, Distribution and Overseas Reach

The newspaper's recorded circulation is 200,000 copies, the figure given in its standard Chinese reference entry. For a provincial party organ, circulation is largely institutional — subscriptions by party and government organs, enterprises and schools across the province — and 200,000 places Jiangxi Daily in the middle range of China's provincial party dailies, below the largest coastal titles but sufficient to reach every county of the province daily. Its distribution horizon widened in September 1984, when Jiangxi Daily began to be distributed overseas, a step recorded in its reference entry and unusual enough for an inland province's party paper to mark a deliberate effort to carry Jiangxi's official voice to readers abroad, including the province's overseas communities. The paper's general standing was recognised nationally in January 2018, when it was selected into the recommended list of the national Top 100 newspapers for 2017, announced by the China Economic Net's reporting of the press and publication authorities' list — the same honours round that recognised most of China's leading provincial party organs.

Headquarters, Leadership and Staff

The newspaper is headquartered in the Jiangxi Daily Press News Building at 190 Yangming Road in Nanchang, the address given in its reference entry; its parent group, Jiangxi Newspaper Media Group, also maintains offices in the Jiangbao Media Building on Honggu Middle Avenue in the city's Honggutan district, the address used in the group's 2026 recruitment notices. The reference entry names Huang Wanlin as president of the press and Zhang Tianqing as editor-in-chief of the newspaper. A provincial newspaper directory profile gives a sense of the institution's scale, recording 656 employees at Jiangxi Daily Press, of whom 216 were editors and reporters, including nine senior editors and a further tier of associate-senior editorial staff. The press's corporate family, listed in its reference entry, includes the Jiangxi Newspaper Information Industry Park company, Jiangxi Dajiang High-Tech, and the Jiangxi News Travel Agency — subsidiaries spanning property, technology and services that are typical of the diversified operations Chinese provincial newspaper groups built around their party-paper flagships in the reform era.

Sister Title: Jiangnan Metropolis Daily

The group's commercial flagship is the Jiangnan Metropolis Daily, a comprehensive metropolitan daily sponsored and published by Jiangxi Daily Press. It was founded on 1 April 1994 under the predecessor name Ganzhou — properly, Ganjiang Mass Daily — and was renamed Jiangnan Metropolis Daily on 1 August 1997. Published under the motto of attending to the city's warmth and cold and caring for the people's hardships, it became, by the measures recorded in its reference entry, the comprehensive daily with the largest circulation in Jiangxi, the newspaper with the highest market share and the most subscribers in Nanchang and the province as a whole, and a title that has long ranked among the top thirty newspapers nationally. Its "Citizen Hotline" column, a channel through which readers seek help with everyday difficulties, won the China News Famous Column award in 2003 — the first such national column award for Jiangxi journalism, and, its entry records, a first among China's local newspapers. In the provincial market the pair function as party organ and market leader respectively: Jiangxi Daily speaks with institutional authority, while its metropolitan sister dominates the commercial readership on which the group's advertising income depends.

Sister Title: Information Daily and a National First

A second group title carries a national distinction of its own. The Information Daily, belonging to the Jiangxi Daily newspaper group, was founded on 1 October 1984 and is described in its reference entry as China's first comprehensive information daily devoted to in-depth economic information and everyday life information for ordinary readers. It began as a daily, and its later history tracks the pressures on Chinese print: in 2017 it was integrated in operation with the China Jiangxi Network, and from 2018 it was reduced from daily publication to four issues a week, priced at five yuan, before later settling into a Monday-to-Friday schedule at two yuan. Reference updates record that from 1 July 2026 the Information Daily ceased publication under that name and was relaunched, under a changed registration, as the Red Star Youth Daily for children and young people. The title's forty-year arc — a pioneering information paper of the early reform era, absorbed into web integration, reduced in frequency and finally converted to a youth paper — is a compact history of the Chinese provincial press market, preserved inside the Jiangxi Daily group itself.

Digital Presence: Dajiang Network and the E-Paper

The group's digital arm is the Dajiang Network, at jxnews.com.cn, which also hosts the newspaper's electronic edition at epaper.jxnews.com.cn. The network's best-documented service is its "Ask Jiangxi" government-affairs column. In September 2018 the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and provincial government launched the construction of a "five-type" government — loyal, innovative, responsible, service-oriented and excellent — and on 9 January 2019 the office of the provincial leading group for that programme, together with Jiangxi Daily, built a social-participation and supervision platform on the Dajiang Network's Ask Jiangxi column, through which enterprises and citizens submit questions and complaints to government. The platform was written into the provincial government work report delivered to the provincial people's congress in 2019, and the distinction was repeated when it was written into the work report again at the sixth session of the thirteenth provincial people's congress in January 2022, where the provincial leadership directed that its visibility be raised and its handling mechanism — respond to needs, handle complaints on receipt — be improved. A party newspaper group's website being named twice in the province's annual government work report is a measurable marker of how far the flagship's digital operation had moved from republication into governance infrastructure.

Innovation: The AR Newspaper of 2019

The press has also used the flagship to stage technology firsts. On 18 October 2019 Jiangxi Daily Press published what provincial directories describe as the country's first augmented-reality live newspaper, produced with AR technology, and presented it the following day at the 2019 World VR Industry Conference, which opened in Nanchang on 19 October. The choice of venue was deliberate: Nanchang hosts the World VR Industry Conference, and the provincial party paper used its own print product to demonstrate the technology the conference promoted, allowing the printed page to trigger live digital content. The episode is recorded in the standard directory profile of the newspaper alongside its founding facts, and it illustrates the group's strategy in the convergence era — to keep the printed party organ itself newsworthy by fusing it with the digital products, from the Dajiang Network to AR editions, that the same newsroom produces.

Standing and Significance

Jiangxi Daily's profile is that of a mid-sized but complete provincial party press. Its core credentials are early and solid: a 7 June 1949 founding, a Mao Zedong masthead, the first registration number in its provincial series, a recorded circulation of 200,000, overseas distribution from 1984 and a place on the 2017 national Top 100 list. Around that core, Jiangxi Daily Press built the province's dominant metropolitan daily, a nationally pioneering information paper, and a news network whose public-supervision platform has been twice commended in the provincial government work report. For researchers, the paper is a standard data point — classified in international datasets as Jiangxi's province-level party daily — and for Jiangxi's readers it remains what its directory description promises: the provincial committee's authoritative daily voice, rooted, in its own words, in the province's red land, and now delivered as much through the Dajiang Network and its e-paper as through the printed sheet Mao named in 1949.
