About JimJam

JimJam

JimJam is an international pre-school children's television channel, aimed at children aged from about one to six, operated by AMC Networks International. Launched on 1 October 2006 on Sky in Italy, it grew from a joint venture involving HIT Entertainment, the creator of many of its best-known programmes, into a wholly owned AMC channel distributed across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, including satellite carriage in the United Kingdom. Its schedules are built around gentle, educational entertainment for very young viewers, including Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Barney & Friends, Angelina Ballerina and Pingu.

Launch in Italy in 2006

JimJam launched on 1 October 2006 as a channel on the Sky platform in Italy. It was conceived from the start as an international pre-school service rather than a purely Italian one. In September 2007 HIT Entertainment and Chellomedia, the European content division of Liberty Global and the predecessor of AMC Networks International, formed a joint venture to run the channel. The venture was advertised as international, with plans to begin cable and satellite broadcasting in Western and Eastern Europe and then to expand worldwide, initially outside the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States and Canada, where pre-school provision was already well established. HIT's involvement gave the channel direct access to the most valuable pre-school catalogue of its era, including the Thomas, Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam franchises.

Expansion across Europe and beyond

Expansion followed quickly. In November 2007 JimJam extended into Central and Eastern Europe on UPC Broadband. By March 2008 it had launched in the Netherlands and Switzerland, and launches followed on Showtime Arabia in the Middle East and in Russia and Bulgaria in July 2008. Southeast Asia followed in November 2008, and Portugal on 28 November 2008. Israel received the channel on the Yes platform in January 2010, and a Russian-language version launched there on Hot in 2012. Africa became a significant market later: the channel launched on the My TV platform, serving English-speaking sub-Saharan Africa, in April 2012, when it was described as the only pre-school channel on that platform, and on the ZAP platform for Angola and Mozambique in November 2012. Launches in Indonesia and elsewhere in Asia followed. By 2010 JimJam had been broadcast in over fifty territories, and by 2013 it was available to an audience of about seventeen million subscribers in thirteen languages, broadcast in over sixty territories across Europe, the Middle East, East Asia and Africa, with seven feeds and four localised versions.

Ownership: from joint venture to AMC Networks

In August 2010 HIT Entertainment withdrew from the JimJam joint venture, leaving the channel wholly owned by Chellomedia's channel division, Chello Zone, although HIT was expected to continue supplying programmes. The channel later described itself in trade coverage as part of Chello Zone's international portfolio, run from London, which handled launches and programme acquisitions for its feeds, including deals for Italian broadcasts of Hello Kitty specials and Denver: The Last Dinosaur. In 2014 AMC Networks acquired Chellomedia and in July of that year renamed it AMC Networks International, bringing JimJam under the AMC name alongside channels such as Sundance. The channel is now operated by AMC Networks International Central and Northern Europe, and in Poland it is provided in partnership with the Polsat Group under the Polsat JimJam name. Its current availability is concentrated in Europe and Africa, including Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary and South Africa.

Programming for the youngest viewers

JimJam's programming is selected for pre-school children and is deliberately calm, short-form and repetitive in structure, suiting children aged one to six and reassuring parents about safety and educational value. The core of the schedule has long been the classic British and international pre-school catalogue: Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Angelina Ballerina, Barney & Friends, Pingu, Oswald, Rubbadubbers and Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs, together with series such as Chuggington, Guess How Much I Love You, Messy Goes to Okido, Heroes of the City, Dot. and Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Acquisitions for individual feeds broadened the mix: the Czech-produced baby animal documentary series My Animal Family was among the first premieres on the African service, and seasonal programming such as Bob the Builder Christmas specials and Wind in the Willows featured in its schedules. Programmes are dubbed or localised for each market, and the channel's thirteen language versions made it one of the most widely localised pre-school services of its generation.

Feeds, formats and presentation

JimJam has been distributed as multiple regional feeds rather than a single worldwide service, allowing programme rights, languages and scheduling to be managed territory by territory. The channel switched to a 16:9 widescreen picture format on 1 July 2016, although some presentation elements continued in the older ratio for a time. Its original logo, used from launch, remained in place for nearly twelve years, an unusually long life that reflected the value of a stable, recognisable identity for very young children. On 1 August 2018, following an announcement by AMC Networks International the previous month, the channel was rebranded with a new logo and idents designed by Wiedemann Lampe, the identity it retains today.

Market changes and closed feeds

Not every feed survived. The channel closed in Asia in December 2014, in its original Italian market on 30 June 2015, and in the Netherlands on 1 March 2018. Those closures reflected the same pressures that reshaped children's television generally in the 2010s: pre-school viewing moved increasingly to broadcaster-owned brands, video on demand and later streaming and video platforms, and platform operators in some markets preferred to carry the channels of the major children's groups. JimJam nevertheless continued in its core Central and Eastern European markets, in Africa and in other territories where an independent, acquisition-based pre-school channel retained carriage value, and it remains in operation under AMC Networks International.

JimJam and British pre-school television

JimJam has a notably British character for an international channel. Many of its defining programmes, including Thomas, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Angelina Ballerina and Pingu in its British distribution, originated with British producers or with HIT Entertainment, the British company that co-founded the channel; its channel operations were run for many years from London by Chello Zone and then AMC Networks International's British-based teams; and it was carried in the United Kingdom on satellite for an audience of children aged one to six. It operated, however, as an international service rather than as a competitor to the BBC's CBeebies in domestic production: it commissioned little original British programming, relying instead on the strength and familiarity of its acquired pre-school catalogue, distributed efficiently across dozens of territories from a London base.

Audience and positioning

The channel addresses an audience that programme makers treat with particular care. Content for children under six must be comprehensible without reading, paced for short attention spans, free of frightening material and capable of being watched repeatedly. JimJam's positioning, in its own trade descriptions, has consistently stressed a safe and trusted environment, with programmes chosen to entertain while supporting early learning, language, counting, social behaviour and curiosity about animals, vehicles, work and the natural world, themes embodied by its construction, rescue, railway and animal series. That positioning, and the recognisability of characters such as Thomas, Bob and Sam to parents as well as children, underpinned its carriage negotiations with platform operators from Italy in 2006 to Africa in 2012.

JimJam today

JimJam continues to broadcast as an AMC Networks International pre-school channel, principally across Europe and Africa, with localised feeds, the identity introduced in 2018 and a schedule still centred on the classic pre-school series with which it launched, supplemented by newer acquisitions. Its official website, jimjam.tv, supports the channel in its markets. Approaching two decades after its Italian launch, it is one of the surviving examples of the independent international channel model in children's television: a single brand, owned from London-centred operations, localised into many languages and built almost entirely on a trusted library of programmes for the youngest viewers.
