About Journal of Renmin University of China

Journal of Renmin University of China

The Journal of Renmin University of China is the flagship Chinese-language comprehensive social-sciences journal of Renmin University of China (RUC) in Beijing. Published by the university, it carries research across philosophy, economics, law, political science, sociology, history, literature and management, and it is consistently ranked among China's most influential humanities and social-science journals in national citation evaluations. As the house journal of the university that describes itself as China's flagship for social sciences and humanities education, it functions as a standard record of scholarly debate in the Chinese social sciences — a place where the country's leading social-science university presents work from across its disciplines between one set of covers.

The university behind the journal

Renmin University of China is a comprehensive research university focusing on the humanities and social sciences. Its official history records that it was formally established, under its present name, on 3 October 1950 in Beijing, and the university is widely described as the flagship institution for social sciences and humanities education in China. It reports thirteen Key Research Institutes of Humanities and Social Sciences, ranking first in number in the country. A comprehensive journal published by such a university is therefore not a peripheral newsletter: it is one of the principal public faces of an institution whose entire identity rests on the disciplines the journal covers. The university's publishing apparatus is correspondingly large — Renmin University of China Press was established in 1955 and is an important base for liberal-arts textbooks and academic publications, and the university's Information Center for Social Sciences, established in 1958, publishes and distributes a large family of social-science publications.

A comprehensive social-sciences journal

Chinese universities traditionally publish their own academic journals — xuebao — and the comprehensive social-sciences xuebao of a major university is a recognised genre: peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary, and expected to reflect the research strengths of its home institution. The Journal of Renmin University of China is the Renmin entry in that genre, but with an unusual weight behind it, because Renmin's strengths — economics, law, political science, philosophy, sociology, history and literature — are precisely the fields a comprehensive social-sciences journal must cover. Its remit, as stated in its own presentation, spans philosophy, economics, law, political science, sociology, history, literature and management, and it is open to scholarship from beyond the university as well as from its own faculty.

Contents and scholarly character

The journal's recent issues show the breadth in practice. The first issue of 2024 (Volume 38, Issue 1, published on 16 January 2024) opened with an article by Guo Jianming on the construction of "classic literature" — the mainstream, must-read literature of the disciplines — arguing that such canons are built by extracting the essence of knowledge, stabilising a systematic scientific foundation and highlighting Chinese characteristics. The same issue carried a study of the political building of the Communist Party of China during the Yan'an period, analysing the Party's political mission and circumstances and the "systemic project" of Party building that resulted, and an article on the theory of common prosperity in which two conceptions of justice — need and equality — are intertwined.

Issues from 2026 show the same mixture of theory, policy research and history. The first issue of Volume 40 discussed placing agriculture, rural areas and rural residents at the top of the Party's work agenda, reviewing the reform of the rural land system and identifying advances in land property rights, allocation efficiency and management institutions; it also carried a study of how Marx inherited classical political economy and philosophy and elevated labour to the status of practice across ontology, existence, history and emancipation. The fourth issue of 2026 opened with research on Xi Jinping's discourse on foreign economic relations as a topic in the study of Xi Jinping Economic Thought, followed by work on how, after the disintegration of the traditional China-centred tributary system, modern nation-state building began in China, Japan, the Korean Peninsula and Vietnam. Marxist theory, Party history, rural policy, political economy and comparative East Asian history thus sit side by side — the characteristic table of contents of a comprehensive Renmin journal.

Bibliographic record and indexing

The journal's articles carry DOIs under its registered ISSN, 1000-5420, in the form used by Chinese academic publishing (for example, 10.3969/j.issn.1000-5420). Its volume numbering reached Volume 38 in 2024 and Volume 40 in 2026, evidence of a long, continuous run. It maintains an official journal website with an English-language interface presenting current and past issues, article titles and abstracts — the 2024 and 2026 issues cited above are listed there. In China's evaluation system the journal is a source journal of the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI): scholars' curricula vitae routinely tag articles published in it as CSSCI publications, the standard marker of a leading Chinese social-science journal, and it has long ranked in China's core-journal lists for comprehensive social sciences.

Standing in Chinese academic evaluation

China evaluates its social-science journals through overlapping national systems — the CSSCI source list, the Peking University core-journal lists, and citation-based rankings of influence. The Journal of Renmin University of China is, per its record, consistently ranked among the country's most influential humanities and social-science journals in national citation evaluations. For Chinese academics, publication in a university's flagship comprehensive journal of this rank carries weight in hiring, promotion and grant assessment, which in turn shapes what the journal receives: strong submissions from established scholars at Renmin and elsewhere, in fields from jurisprudence to literary studies. Its pages have hosted, for example, frequently cited work on cross-border insolvency recognition and on environmental public-interest litigation by Renmin law professors, cited onward in international scholarship.

Not the reprint digests: a namesake distinction

The journal should not be confused with the other famous Renmin University periodical enterprise, the Fuyin Baokan Ziliao — the reprinted-materials-from-newspapers-and-periodicals series produced by the university's Information Center for Social Sciences since 1958. That centre collects, screens and republishes selected articles from across China's press in more than a hundred subject digests, and being reprinted in it is itself an academic honour. The Journal of Renmin University of China, by contrast, is an original-research journal: it publishes new articles, not reprints. The two enterprises share a university and a name, and together they make Renmin an unusual double presence in Chinese social-science publishing — as both a publisher of original scholarship and the national clearing-house that re-circulates everyone else's.

Beijing setting

The journal is edited in Beijing, where Renmin University's campus stands on Zhongguancun Street in Haidian District, the capital's university quarter. That setting matters to its character. Haidian concentrates China's leading social-science institutions — universities, academies and ministries within a short distance of one another — and a comprehensive journal edited there draws authors, reviewers and debates from the centre of national academic life. Its subject matter reflects the location too: questions of national policy, Party history and economic strategy that are formulated in Beijing appear in its pages as scholarship, examined with the apparatus of the disciplines.

Readership and significance

The journal's readers are the Chinese social-science academy itself: professors and doctoral students across the disciplines it covers, university libraries that hold comprehensive xuebao as a matter of course, and researchers abroad who follow Chinese debates through its English-interface website and its CSSCI-indexed record. Its significance lies less in any single article than in its function as a barometer. Because it is comprehensive rather than specialised, a run of its issues shows what China's flagship social-sciences university considered important across all its fields in a given year — from the construction of disciplinary canons, to rural land reform, to the theory of common prosperity. As such, the Journal of Renmin University of China stands as a standard record of scholarly debate in the Chinese social sciences, and one of the defining products of the Chinese university-journal tradition.
