About Journal of Zhongyuan University of Technology
Journal of Zhongyuan University of Technology
Overview and identity
The Journal of Zhongyuan University of Technology is the Chinese-language academic journal of Zhongyuan University of Technology in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. Its Chinese title is Zhongyuan Gongxueyuan Xuebao. University sources list it first among the three academic journals the university publishes, the others being Group Technology and Production Modernization and Technology of Textile and Apparel, and note that the three titles enjoy considerable recognition in their professional fields. In the university's earlier English materials the journal was rendered as the Transaction of Zhongyuan University of Technology. No International Standard Serial Number was attested in the sources consulted for this profile, and none is claimed here. The journal is the comprehensive scholarly voice of a university whose founding identity was textile engineering, and it must be distinguished from the textile trade journals and from the journals of Zhengzhou University, the provincial capital's much larger comprehensive university, both covered elsewhere in this directory.
From Zhengzhou Textile Institute, 1955
The host university was founded in 1955 as the Zhengzhou Textile Institute, an institution of the Ministry of Textile Industry of the People's Republic of China, created to train engineers and technologists for China's cotton textile industry at a time when Zhengzhou was being developed as one of the country's principal textile bases. For more than four decades the institute remained under the textile ministry's supervision. In September 1998, in line with the national policy of joint supervision by central and local authorities with primary local responsibility, it was transferred to Henan Province. In July 2000 it was renamed Zhongyuan University of Technology, a name that replaced the single-industry identity with a regional one: Zhongyuan, the Central Plains, is the historic name for the Henan heartland of Chinese civilisation. The journal carried the institution through that transition, continuing under the new university name.
A textile and clothing university broadened
Zhongyuan University of Technology is described in university and directory sources as a high-level, characteristic backbone university that focuses on engineering, has distinctive characteristics in textiles and apparel and in aviation technology, and supports the coordinated development of engineering, management, liberal arts, sciences, economics, law, philosophy, history and art. Its Henan characteristic backbone discipline group, New Textile and Apparel Materials and High-end Equipment, covers five first-level disciplines and anchors the university's research identity. Seventeen majors, including textile engineering, have been approved as national or provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites. For the journal, this profile means its natural centre of gravity lies in textile science, clothing, materials and machinery, set within a comprehensive university whose law, economics, journalism and foreign-language faculties also contribute scholarship.
Campuses and teaching units
The university is divided into three teaching areas, the Longhu Campus, the Zhongyuan Campus and the West Campus, covering an area of about 1,610 mu. University sources list around twenty teaching schools and departments, including the School of Textiles, the School of Fashion Technology, the School of Energy and Environment Engineering, the School of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, the School of Materials and Chemical Engineering, the School of Computer Science, the School of Art and Design, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Political Science and Law, the School of Journalism and Communication, the School of Foreign Languages and the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture. Earlier university materials describe 46 undergraduate programmes and more than 15,000 full-time students, figures that have since grown with the institution. This departmental breadth is the journal's supply base: a xuebao's contents mirror the faculties that surround it.
Research centres feeding the journal
The university's research organisation shows the depth of its textile specialisation. Its named centres include the Center of Textile Engineering and Technology, co-founded with the Zhengzhou municipal government and headed in the university's accounts by an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Center of Fashion CAD Development and Application, the Center of Electrostatic Testing, a nanometer compounds research centre, an automation laboratory, research centres for energy and environment engineering and for systems and industry engineering technology, an electric engineering research centre and a centre for Central China finery culture and fine arts design. Later sources count 36 national and provincial key laboratories and research centres, including a national and local joint laboratory for efficient and precise diamond sawing and cutting techniques, the Henan Textile and Apparel Industry Collaborative Innovation Center and the Henan Provincial Key Laboratory of Functional Textile Materials. Research of this kind — functional fabrics, textile machinery, electrostatic measurement, fashion computing — is the characteristic material from which the university's journals are built.
Three journals, one scholarly system
Zhongyuan University of Technology's three-journal system maps neatly onto its identity. The Journal of Zhongyuan University of Technology is the comprehensive title, carrying research from across the university. Group Technology and Production Modernization serves manufacturing and production engineering, reflecting the mechanical and industrial engineering side of the institution. Technology of Textile and Apparel, also rendered as Henan Textile Science and Technology, serves the founding textile specialism directly. University histories note that the university's patent acceptance volume ranked first among Henan provincial academic institutions in 2004 and 2005, evidence of the applied, invention-oriented research culture in which these journals operate. Within the system, the comprehensive journal's role is integrative: it records the whole university's scholarship rather than a single industry's, and it is the title under which the institution's renaming in 2000 is most visible in the serials record.
Scope and scholarly content
The journal publishes research in the fields its host teaches: textile engineering, materials and chemical engineering, mechanical and electronic engineering, energy and environment, information and computer science, and, on the social-science side, economics, management, law, journalism and foreign languages. Its comprehensive character distinguishes it from the university's two specialist companions and from single-subject textile journals published by industry bodies. As with other Chinese university xuebao, it serves the university's own staff and postgraduate researchers as a primary readership while also accepting and being cited by scholars elsewhere. Readers should expect applied engineering to predominate, with the textile and apparel research for which Zhengzhou and the university are known forming its most distinctive stratum.
International cooperation and exchange
The university describes itself as one of the earlier Henan institutions to undertake Sino-foreign cooperative education, with a long history of exchange with universities in Britain, Russia and elsewhere. Its documented partners have included the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom, Ivanovo State Textile Academy in Russia, Unitec Institute of Technology in New Zealand and Keimyung University in South Korea, with cooperative programmes in fields including textile engineering, clothing design and construction engineering. Such links matter to a university journal indirectly but genuinely: they widen the research contacts of the faculty who write for it, bring comparative textile and design scholarship into the institution, and help explain why a provincial engineering university's journal is cited and catalogued in international admissions and directory literature under its English title.
Place among Zhengzhou journals
Zhengzhou is one of China's densest journal cities, home to the many titles of Zhengzhou University as well as the journals of its engineering, water, agriculture and light-industry institutions. The Journal of Zhongyuan University of Technology occupies a specific niche in that ecology: it is the comprehensive journal of the capital's textile-rooted university. Its distinctiveness is reinforced by its companions — few Chinese universities maintain both a general xuebao and a dedicated textile and apparel journal — and by the university's Henan-leading textile discipline group. It is a different title from the Journal of Henan University of Engineering, also in this batch, whose host was formed from a textile college and a coal-management college in 2007; the Zhongyuan title's lineage runs instead through a single ministry textile institute founded in 1955.
Access, citation and continuing significance
The journal is published in Chinese and is encountered by researchers through Chinese academic databases, through the university's own publications pages and through citations under both its current English rendering, Journal of Zhongyuan University of Technology, and the older Transaction of ZUT. Because no ISSN was attested in the sources consulted, bibliographic identification rests on the Chinese title Zhongyuan Gongxueyuan Xuebao, the sponsoring university and the volume sequence. The journal's continuing significance lies in what it records: the transformation of a 1955 ministry textile institute, built for one industry in one planned-economy city, into a multidisciplinary provincial university whose scholarship now spans fashion technology, diamond cutting, energy and law. Its pages preserve that institutional journey in the form Chinese academia knows best, the university xuebao.
