About Kabar Jombang
Kabar Jombang
Kabar Jombang, published at kabarjombang.com, is an Indonesian local online news website serving Jombang Regency in East Java. First launched on 27 July 2015, it is a hyperlocal title: its reporting is devoted to the regency itself rather than to the wider province or to national news. Since 2019 it has been owned by PT SB Intermedia Pers and managed in the Faktual Media group alongside the East Java portal FaktualNews.co, and in 2020 it was verified by the Indonesian Press Council (Dewan Pers). It is a commercial site, publishes in Indonesian, and remains active, making it one of the longer-lived regency-level online newspapers in East Java.
Launch on 27 July 2015
KabarJombang.com was first launched on 27 July 2015, and that date is the founding date recorded both in its own About page and in reference sources. It belongs to the first generation of Indonesian regency-level online media, founded in the mid-2010s when falling web publishing costs allowed journalists to build a news service for a single kabupaten, or regency, without a printing press or a broadcast licence. From the beginning its coverage was specific to Jombang Regency, and despite the later change of ownership that focus never changed: reference sources describe its main reporting, from launch to the present, as local news of Jombang Regency. In its early years it operated independently, before the consolidation that reshaped much of Indonesia's local media sector at the end of the decade.
Jombang, the Regency It Serves
The regency that defines the site's entire brief is a substantial community. Jombang Regency, in the centre of East Java southwest of Surabaya, covers about 1,110 square kilometres and is divided into twenty-one districts, or kecamatan, comprising more than three hundred villages and urban wards. Its population was recorded as 1,318,062 at the 2020 census, with an official estimate of about 1,380,963 by mid-2025. The regency capital is the town of Jombang, and the regency is known across Indonesia as a centre of Islamic education, the birthplace of Abdurrahman Wahid, the country's fourth president, and home to major pesantren boarding schools such as Tebuireng. The regency itself was established in 1910 and sits at a crossroads of East Java, on the Surabaya to Madiun route and the Malang to Babat route, as an inland regency crossed by dozens of rivers, the longest of them the Brantas. It borders Lamongan Regency to the north, Mojokerto to the east, Malang to the south, Kediri to the southwest and Nganjuk to the west, so its local news regularly touches the affairs of five neighbouring regencies as well as its own districts. Its mottoes reflect its religious character: it is widely styled Kota Santri, the City of Islamic Students, with the regency slogan Jombang Beriman. A dedicated regency news site therefore serves a readership whose daily concerns, regency government, schools and religious institutions, land and agriculture, local crime and events, are too granular for provincial media in Surabaya to cover in depth, which is precisely the gap Kabar Jombang was created to fill.
Acquisition by PT SB Intermedia Pers in 2019
The turning point in the site's history came in 2019, when it was acquired by PT SB Intermedia Pers, the company behind FaktualNews.co, the Jombang-founded portal that had expanded to cover East Java. Kabar Jombang was brought under the same management as FaktualNews.co in the group the company calls Kelompok Faktual Media, the Faktual Media group, whose formation was marked in the group's third-anniversary coverage carried by the Indonesian Cyber Media Association (AMSI) in December 2019. The acquisition paired two complementary titles under one owner: FaktualNews.co, founded in 2016 and oriented towards the whole of East Java, and Kabar Jombang, founded a year earlier and oriented towards the single regency. For the older site, joining a group offered the commercial and managerial backing of an established local publisher; for the group, it added a dedicated hyperlocal masthead for its home regency.
Reporting Structure After the Acquisition
Under PT SB Intermedia Pers, the site's news structure became more detailed, with its reporting reach organised down to the level of each district in Jombang Regency. That district-level organisation matters in a regency of twenty-one kecamatan: stories can be gathered and categorised by the district they come from, from the regency capital to rural districts such as Peterongan, where the site's reporting on a dispute involving school meal menus was among the stories it promoted through its social channels. Its coverage concentrates on the standard diet of Indonesian regency news, local government and public services, events and incidents, education, religion and community affairs, presented as short, frequently updated online news items for a predominantly local readership. Audience measurement estimates for the site indicate a readership that is almost entirely within Indonesia and overwhelmingly on mobile phones, consistent with a hyperlocal audience reading regency news on smartphones.
Press Council Verification in 2020
In 2020, the year after its acquisition, Kabar Jombang was verified by the Press Council, with its record appearing in the Council's press company data. Press Council verification is Indonesia's formal recognition that a news publisher is a registered press company with the required legal structure, a named person responsible for its journalism and a published editorial office. Its sister title had completed the same process earlier, in October 2017. For Kabar Jombang, verification under its new owner regularised its status as a professional press company rather than an informal news blog, a distinction with practical consequences in Indonesia, where public bodies and advertisers routinely favour verified media, and where verification is the route by which complaints about reporting are handled through the Press Council's mechanisms instead of the criminal law.
Relationship with FaktualNews.co
Kabar Jombang's closest relationship is with FaktualNews.co, and the two sites' histories are intertwined. Both are published by PT SB Intermedia Pers from Jombang, both sit in the Faktual Media group, and audience data treats the two domains as each other's nearest competitors and complements, with readers of one frequently visiting the other. Their division of labour is geographic: FaktualNews.co, founded by Adi Susanto, a former Harian Bangsa journalist who leads the group as editor-in-chief and chief executive, grew from Jombang coverage into an East Java-wide portal, while Kabar Jombang kept the regency brief it had held since 2015. The pairing lets one newsroom organisation serve two scales of local news at once, provincial and hyperlocal, under two mastheads with separate founding identities.
Ownership and Organisation
The site's owner of record is PT SB Intermedia Pers, an Indonesian limited company, and the site is operated commercially in the Indonesian language. Its recorded status is active. It maintains official social media presences, including Facebook, Instagram and X accounts and a TikTok account under the Kabar Jombang name, through which it distributes its stories and invites readers to its website, a distribution pattern typical of Indonesian local media, whose audiences increasingly arrive from social platforms rather than homepages. No change of ownership since the 2019 acquisition is recorded in reference sources, giving the title a stable corporate home after its independent first years.
Place in East Java's Hyperlocal Media
Kabar Jombang represents the hyperlocal tier of Indonesian journalism at its most durable. Founded in 2015 as an independent regency site, it survived the consolidation of the local media market by joining a small group in 2019 without losing its name, its domain or its single-regency brief, and it completed national Press Council verification in 2020. In a province where provincial portals compete for the same readers, its value to its audience is the opposite of scale: sustained attention to one regency of twenty-one districts and well over a million people, reported at district level by a publisher headquartered in that same regency. On the facts recorded in reference sources, it remains what it was at launch, Jombang Regency's dedicated online news site, now with the backing of the Faktual Media group.
