About Kyodo News

Kyodo News is Japan's leading news agency, a nonprofit cooperative headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, that distributes news to almost all newspapers and radio and television networks in Japan. Its New Delhi bureau covers India and South Asia for Japanese and international subscribers, filing text and photographic reports on Indian politics, the economy, diplomacy and society for the agency's domestic and global wire services. The agency's official website is kyodonews.jp, with its English-language online service operating as Japan Wire by Kyodo News.

Overview

Kyodo News (Kyodo Tsushinsha) is the principal supplier of wholesale news to the Japanese media: its copy reaches virtually every newspaper, broadcaster and digital outlet in the country, and the newspapers using its news have about fifty million subscribers between them. As a nonprofit cooperative, it exists to serve its member-subscribers rather than to generate profit, ploughing its resources back into newsgathering. The agency employs more than a thousand journalists and photographers in Japan and abroad, maintains news-exchange agreements with over seventy international media outlets, and publishes its online news in Japanese, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Korean and English.

The New Delhi bureau is one of the agency's long-standing South Asian outposts. Operating from the Indian capital, its correspondents report on India — the world's most populous country and a pivotal Indo-Pacific power — for Japanese newspapers, broadcasters and digital subscribers, as well as for the agency's international clients. The bureau's presence in New Delhi is a matter of public record: its correspondents appear in the Press Information Bureau's accreditation lists, and its India coverage is a staple of the agency's English-language output.

Founding: November 1945

Kyodo News was established in November 1945, in the immediate aftermath of World War II. It was formed by Furuno Inosuke, the president of the Domei News Agency, following the dissolution of Domei — the wartime agency that had monopolised Japanese newsgathering — after Japan's defeat. The creation of Kyodo as a nonprofit cooperative was a deliberate break with the state-controlled model of wartime journalism: the new agency was to be owned collectively by its subscribing media organisations and dedicated to the free flow of accurate news in a democratic Japan.

The cooperative structure has defined the agency ever since. Kyodo's members — newspapers and broadcasters across Japan — are both its owners and its customers, and the agency's mandate is to provide them with comprehensive, impartial coverage of domestic and world events. Its business arm, K. K. Kyodo News, was established in 1972 to handle commercial operations alongside the cooperative's core newsgathering mission.

Domestic reach in Japan

Kyodo's domestic position is unmatched in Japanese journalism. It distributes news to almost all newspapers and to the radio and television networks of the country, making it the common newsgathering backbone of the Japanese press. Subscribers to its Japanese-language news service — which offers translations in English and Chinese — include the major domestic television and radio networks in addition to local newspapers with a combined circulation of approximately twenty-one million. The agency's PR Wire, established in 2001 as an affiliate operation, became the country's first fully fledged press-release distributor, disseminating releases to some 2,600 Japanese entities controlling more than 4,000 media outlets.

This wholesale role means that much of what Japanese readers and viewers learn about the world — including about India — arrives via Kyodo's wires. A story filed by the New Delhi bureau on an Indian election, a bilateral summit or an economic reform can appear, within hours, in dozens of Japanese newspapers and broadcasts, translated and adapted for audiences from Hokkaido to Okinawa.

The New Delhi bureau

Kyodo has maintained a bureau in New Delhi for decades, covering India and the wider South Asian region. The bureau's correspondents are accredited with the Press Information Bureau of the Government of India — the accreditation lists record Kyodo News correspondents based in the capital, including, in recent years, correspondent Ashish Nijhawan of the New Delhi Bureau. Earlier accreditation records show the bureau operating from Ferozshah Road in central New Delhi, the diplomatic and media quarter of the capital.

The bureau's reporting brief spans the full range of Indian affairs of interest to Japanese audiences: national politics and elections, economic policy and trade, the growing India-Japan strategic and economic partnership, defence and security developments, science and technology, and major social and cultural stories. Its coverage of the India-Japan relationship is particularly significant, given the depth of economic ties between the two countries — Japanese automakers, infrastructure firms and development assistance are major presences in the Indian economy, and the bureau reports both on Japanese business in India and on Indian developments that matter to Japanese policymakers and investors. Veteran Kyodo hands have passed through the bureau over the years, including correspondents who went on to lead bureaus across Asia.

Global network

Kyodo's international operations extend far beyond New Delhi. Its subsidiary Kyodo News International, founded in 1982 and based in Rockefeller Center in New York City, provides over two hundred reports to international news media. The agency maintains news-exchange agreements with more than seventy international media outlets, giving its subscribers access to world coverage and giving its own reporting — including from bureaus like New Delhi — distribution to global clients.

The agency's overseas bureaus span the world's major capitals and news centres, and its correspondents have covered some of the defining stories of the post-war era. The New Delhi bureau sits within this global lattice as the agency's window on South Asia — a region whose economic weight and strategic importance have grown steadily through the twenty-first century.

The English-language service

Kyodo publishes its online news in four languages: Japanese, Chinese (in both Simplified and Traditional scripts), Korean and English. The English-language online service, long known as Kyodo News Plus, was rebranded in July 2025 as Japan Wire by Kyodo News. The English service carries the agency's international reporting — including dispatches from the New Delhi bureau — to global readers, alongside its Japan-focused news, business coverage, editorials and features.

The multilingual operation reflects the agency's dual identity: it is simultaneously Japan's domestic wire service and an international news agency competing for global audiences. For English-language readers interested in Japan — and in Japan's view of Asia — the English service is the principal window into Kyodo's journalism.

Organisation and scale

Kyodo News is headquartered in the Shiodome Media Tower in Minato, Tokyo. As of April 2022 it employed 1,621 people, including more than a thousand journalists and photographers. Its operating income was reported at 40.7 billion yen for the fiscal year ended March 2012, a measure of the scale of the cooperative's operations. The agency is led by its president, Toshimitsu Sawai. Its structure — a nonprofit cooperative with a commercial business arm and an international subsidiary — is designed to keep newsgathering at the centre while funding it through diversified revenue.

Role and significance

Kyodo News occupies in Japan a position comparable to that of the great cooperative agencies of the West: it is the indispensable, largely invisible infrastructure of the nation's journalism. Its New Delhi bureau extends that infrastructure to South Asia, ensuring that Japanese audiences receive sustained, professional coverage of India — its politics, its economy, its relationship with Japan and its role in the Indo-Pacific — from correspondents on the ground in the Indian capital. In an era when the India-Japan partnership spans bullet trains, semiconductor supply chains, maritime security and development assistance, the bureau's reporting is part of the informational foundation on which one of Asia's most consequential bilateral relationships rests.
