About KZO
KZO
KZO is an Argentine pay-television entertainment channel operated by Kuarzo Entertainment Argentina, one of the country's most prolific television production companies. The channel has been on air since 22 May 2017, broadcasting from Palermo, Buenos Aires, and it serves as the television shop window of the Kuarzo group: a home for entertainment formats, celebrity talk and, in recent years, the televised simulcast of the Urbana Play multimedia group, whose radio programmes are filmed and broadcast as television. In January 2024 KZO joined the DirecTV line-ups in Argentina and Uruguay, on channels 199 in standard definition and 1199 in high definition, and on the DGO streaming platform — the carriage step that turned a small producer-owned signal into a channel available across two countries. KZO is also associated with Editorial Perfil: Perfil lists KZO among the television media it produces in association with Kuarzo Entertainment Argentina, alongside Net TV, +Perfil and Caras TV.
Kuarzo Entertainment and Martín Kweller
To understand KZO, start with its owner. Kuarzo Entertainment Argentina is the production company created by Martín Kweller, one of the defining Argentine television producers of his generation. Kweller's career began in radio and grew through Producciones & Publicidad, P&P, the company he ran with Marcelo Kohen in the late 1990s. In 2000 the Dutch format company Endemol chose P&P as its local partner to produce Gran Hermano, Big Brother, in Argentina; the company became Endemol Argentina, and Kweller became creative director for Latin America of a producer holding rights to hundreds of television formats. Programmes associated with that era, from Hombre al agua and Fear Factor to Talento Fox and Big Brother itself, shaped Argentine reality and entertainment television.
In 2016, when Endemol's international owners withdrew the production operation from Argentina, Kweller, together with partners including Guido Kaczka, Martín Kohen Watkins and Gerardo Waisburg, bought the local assets. On 1 April 2017 the company was relaunched under the name Kuarzo Entertainment Argentina — the founding date carried in this profile's batch record — headquartered at the corner of Avenida Ravignani and Cabrera in Palermo, Buenos Aires, in one of the country's main television production centres. Kuarzo is dedicated to entertainment programmes, fiction series and reality shows for networks in Argentina and abroad, including History, Discovery and Star Channel, and its scripted catalogue — titles such as Un León en el Bosque, El Sabor del Silencio and El Buen Retiro — is now distributed internationally. A production company of that scale launching its own channel was a logical vertical step: Kuarzo made television for everyone else, and KZO gave it a screen of its own.
Launch of the channel in May 2017
KZO went on air on 22 May 2017, weeks after the Kuarzo relaunch. The timing shows the channel was part of the new company's founding plan, not an afterthought: a producer emerging from the Endemol system with studios, formats, talent relationships and a library had every ingredient for a pay channel except distribution, and distribution could be negotiated operator by operator. From Palermo, KZO began as an entertainment signal built around the group's own production capabilities — talk, magazines, celebrity and format programming — rather than around expensive acquired fiction or sport, which a producer-owned start-up channel could not sensibly buy.
The channel also fit into a wider Kweller media expansion of the period. In 2015 he had taken on the artistic and commercial management of Radio Con Vos, and in 2018 Kuarzo entered the shareholding of the licence company of Net TV together with Editorial Perfil, the partnership through which Kuarzo and Perfil became joint operators of open television as well as partners in KZO. Read together, those moves describe a deliberate multi-platform strategy: production for third parties, radio management, a stake in an open channel, and KZO as the group's own pay-television signal.
Programming: entertainment, talk and the producer's catalogue
KZO's programming identity is entertainment in the producer's sense of the word: programmes built around presenters, guests, conversation and spectacle rather than around series or films. As a Kuarzo signal it can draw on the group's format expertise and its talent network — the presenters and panellists who cycle through Kuarzo productions on the major open channels also give KZO a supply of recognisable faces. One long-associated programme in DirecTV's description of the channel is Las rubias, hosted by Marcela Tinayre, a celebrity talk format in the classic Argentine magazine tradition.
The channel's economics follow from that model. Talk and magazine programmes are comparatively inexpensive, can be produced in volume in the group's own studios, age more gracefully in repeats than news, and travel well across the day. For a small pay channel, a library of such programming, refreshed with new talk content and simulcasts, is a sustainable grid. KZO's grid is therefore less a sequence of marquee premieres than a continuous entertainment service — the channel as an always-on extension of the production house.
The Urbana Play simulcast
The most distinctive feature of the modern KZO is its simulcast of Urbana Play. Urbana Play is a Buenos Aires multimedia group built around a radio station whose programmes are conceived for camera as much as for microphone. DirecTV's January 2024 announcement of KZO's arrival described the channel as offering, in simulcast, the programming of Urbana Play, the leading radio station, highlighting Perros de la calle, hosted by Andy Kusnetzoff; Todo pasa, with Matías Martin; and Vuelta y media, hosted by Sebastián Wainraich — three of the most recognised presenter names in Argentine radio.
The simulcast matters beyond the names. Radio-with-cameras has become a central format of Argentine media, as audiences follow presenters across radio, streaming video and television in a single habit. For KZO, carrying Urbana Play gives the channel marquee live daytime content it could never have commissioned alone. For Urbana Play, KZO provides a conventional television window inside pay line-ups and on DGO. Programming research on the channel, including a Universidad del Salvador thesis on KZO, treats exactly this convergence — a producer's channel, a multimedia radio group and streaming distribution — as the channel's defining contemporary feature.
DirecTV carriage in Argentina and Uruguay
KZO's largest distribution step came at the end of 2023. DirecTV announced that the KZO Entertainment signal had joined its programming grid in Argentina and Uruguay, available from 28 December 2023 to prepaid and postpaid satellite customers and to subscribers of the DGO live-television and streaming platform, with the announcement published in January 2024. In Argentina the channel sits on 199 in standard definition and 1199 in high definition; in Uruguay it is on channel 199, for both SD and HD customers. On DGO it appears in the live channel guide for viewing on phones, tablets, computers and smart TVs.
DirecTV's own description introduced the channel to that audience as an Argentine channel produced by Kuarzo, oriented to spectacle and entertainment, carrying the Urbana Play simulcast and Las rubias with Marcela Tinayre. Carriage on a regional satellite platform changed KZO's scale in two ways at once: it added Uruguay, making the Palermo-produced channel a two-country service, and it placed the signal inside one of the most-used electronic programme guides in both markets. For niche pay channels, such carriage is the business; audience, advertising and operator relationships all follow from the grid position.
KZO, Net TV and the Perfil connection
KZO's corporate position is more connected than its small grid presence suggests. Editorial Perfil's own institutional description lists KZO among the television media it produces in association with Kuarzo Entertainment Argentina, together with Net TV, +Perfil and Caras TV, as well as the radio services Radio Perfil and Horizonte. The association dates from the period in which Kuarzo entered the Net TV licence company alongside Perfil in 2018. In practice, Buenos Aires television production is a small world of cross-shareholdings, and KZO sits inside one of its most connected clusters: the producer that makes programmes for all the private open channels, in partnership with the publishing group that owns an open channel, magazines and a newspaper.
That context also explains KZO's durability. A stand-alone entertainment channel owned by a small independent would struggle to refresh programming and negotiate carriage. A channel owned by a top-tier producer, cross-promoted with an open network partnership and supplied with a leading radio group's simulcast has structural advantages that its modest channel number understates. Kuarzo's core business is making television; KZO is where that business is permanently on display.
The Palermo production base
The channel broadcasts from Palermo, the Buenos Aires neighbourhood that, with neighbouring Colegiales and Chacarita, forms the heart of Argentina's television production district. Kuarzo's headquarters at Ravignani and Cabrera — the address is also given as Cabrera 5870 — place it among the studios, post-production houses and format companies that supply Argentine television. Kuarzo also acquired Estudio Mayor, described in accounts of the company as one of the country's principal television production centres. Owning and occupying production infrastructure is the channel's foundation: studios that would otherwise be hired out to networks can originate KZO programming between commercial commissions.
Geography reinforces identity. KZO is a Buenos Aires channel in content as well as address: its talk is porteño celebrity and media talk, its simulcast is a Buenos Aires radio phenomenon, and its talent pool is the capital's entertainment industry. DirecTV's Uruguayan carriage exports that identity across the River Plate, to the neighbouring market culturally closest to Buenos Aires, where Argentine entertainment programming has a long-established audience.
Assessment
KZO, on air since 22 May 2017, is a case study in how a modern production company uses a channel: not as its main business, but as a permanent showcase, a home for its entertainment formats and talk programming, a television window for a partner radio group, and a negotiable asset in carriage talks with regional operators. Its milestones are industrial rather than programmatic — the Kuarzo founding on 1 April 2017 under Martín Kweller, the channel launch that May, the Net TV and Perfil association that followed, the Urbana Play simulcast and the DirecTV launch across Argentina and Uruguay in January 2024. For viewers it is an entertainment and spectacle channel anchored by familiar Argentine presenters. For the industry it is evidence that in contemporary Argentine television, the producer, the channel and the platform are increasingly the same conversation.
