About Law360

Law360 is a subscription-based legal news service that delivers breaking news and analysis to legal professionals across the United States and the United Kingdom. Operated by Portfolio Media, Inc., a subsidiary of LexisNexis, Law360 publishes more than 130 original legal news stories each day, covering high-stakes litigation, transactions, and regulatory developments across 60 practice areas, industries, and topics. Headquartered at 230 Park Avenue in New York City, the service reaches more than 2 million U.S. legal professionals and counts the country's largest law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies among its subscribers. Its coverage is available at law360.com.

Origins at Portfolio Media

Law360's origins trace to October 2003, when Marius Meland founded Portfolio Media and began publishing a daily online newsletter devoted to intellectual property law. The newsletter filled a gap in the legal information market: a fast, focused daily briefing for lawyers who needed to track developments in a single practice area without wading through general-interest legal publications. The IP newsletter's success demonstrated the appetite among attorneys for specialized, speed-driven legal journalism, and it became the template for the broader service that followed.

Expansion and the Law360 launch

In 2004, Meland partnered with Magnus Hoglund, and the two expanded coverage into additional legal practice areas. In 2006, they launched Law360 as a full-scale legal newswire, extending the daily-newsletter model across the legal profession. The original intellectual property newsletter that Meland had started was folded into the new brand, and Law360 took its name from the ambition of covering the full 360 degrees of the legal world. The new service applied the same formula that had worked in intellectual property — original reporting, delivered fast, organized by practice area — to dozens of areas of law. The expansion positioned Law360 as a direct competitor to established legal publishers, with a digital-native model that emphasized speed and breadth over the slower rhythms of traditional legal journalism. Within a few years, the Law360 name had become synonymous with the daily legal briefing for practicing attorneys.

Acquisition by LexisNexis

On March 20, 2012, LexisNexis announced that it had acquired Portfolio Media, the parent company of Law360. LexisNexis said the acquisition added speedy, trusted legal news and analysis to its services, calling breaking legal news a crucial part of an attorney's workflow and a key entry point to legal research. Bob Romeo, CEO of Research and Litigation Solutions at LexisNexis, said that breaking legal news and analysis were critical for legal professionals as they drove success for their businesses and clients, and described Law360 as a key element of the company's growth strategy. At the time of the deal, Law360's daily newsletters were read by more than 100,000 law firm and business professionals, ranging from litigators and corporate counsel to law librarians and legal administrators. Meland and Hoglund continued to run the company as a stand-alone business as co-CEOs, while gaining access to LexisNexis's content resources and distribution network.

The daily newswire model

Law360's core product is its daily newswire: more than 130 original stories published each day, organized into newsletters by practice area and delivered to subscribers each morning. The service distinguishes itself through speed — a content-generation platform that tracks court dockets and regulatory filings in real time enables reporters to break major developments in litigation, deal-making, and legislation before competitors. On a typical day, reporters file multiple stories, and editors approve around 20 articles and features each, covering areas including employment, environmental, intellectual property, securities, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, real estate, tax, and insurance law, across industries from energy and financial services to health care, media, and technology.

Practice areas and sections

Since 2022, Law360 has been organized into a set of distinct sections: Law360 U.S., Law360 U.K., Law360 Pulse, Law360 Tax Authority, Law360 Employment Authority, Law360 Insurance Authority, and Law360 Real Estate Authority, along with special sections on topics supplementing the daily news, editorial analysis, and features on the business of law. The Authority sections provide deep, specialized coverage of their respective fields, effectively operating as vertical publications within the larger service. The U.K. edition extends the newswire model to British legal professionals, reflecting the company's international ambitions.

Subscribers and newsroom

Law360's subscriber base includes the 100 largest law firms in the United States, in-house counsel at major corporations, and government agencies including the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Trade Commission. The publication operates 11 news bureaus across the United States, staffed by reporters and editors who cover federal and state courts, regulatory agencies, and the business of law. The company has described itself as one of the fastest-growing subscription news services in the country, and its hiring has continued steadily, with the New York newsroom regularly seeking reporters and editors with daily-publication experience. Job postings have noted that on a typical day reporters file four stories, and that the company offers extensive training on legal topics — business or legal reporting experience is not required, though professional reporting experience and strong writing skills are. The newsroom's growth has made Law360 one of the largest employers of legal journalists in the country.

Access to Justice coverage

Law360 maintains a free section dedicated to Access to Justice, reporting on the access of individuals and disadvantaged populations to adequate, equitable, and essential criminal and civil justice systems, as well as the noteworthy initiatives and individuals who promote that cause. The section stands apart from the subscription paywall, reflecting the company's recognition that coverage of justice-system equity serves a public interest beyond its paying subscriber base. It has become a respected source of reporting on legal aid, pro bono work, and systemic reform efforts.

Labor relations and the union

Law360's editorial staff is unionized under the NewsGuild of New York, and labor relations have been a significant part of the company's recent history. In December 2024, unionized editorial staffers held a one-day strike in opposition to what the union described as unfair labor practices by parent company LexisNexis, and the NewsGuild filed an unfair labor practice charge stemming from a November bargaining session. The company also laid off 10 percent of its editorial staff in early 2024, a move reported amid the broader wave of cuts across digital and trade media. The union's actions drew attention to working conditions at one of the legal industry's most prominent news organizations.

Role in the legal profession

Within the legal profession, Law360 has become essential infrastructure: the morning newsletters are a standard part of the workday for litigators, transactional attorneys, and in-house counsel who need to know what happened in their practice areas overnight. The service's docket-driven reporting model means that significant court filings and regulatory actions are often first reported by Law360, giving subscribers an information advantage. Competitors in legal publishing have responded by accelerating their own digital operations, but Law360's combination of speed, breadth, and practice-area organization has kept it the dominant player in its category.

Reading Law360 today

Law360 is a commercial, subscription-based service, with its full newswire available to subscribers at law360.com. The site also offers a free Access to Justice section open to all readers. For legal professionals, the service's daily newsletters by practice area remain the flagship product — a fast, comprehensive briefing on the litigation, deals, and regulatory moves that shape their work. More than two decades after Marius Meland started a daily IP newsletter, Law360 stands as the legal profession's leading source of breaking news.
