Le Reflet du Lac is a French-language community weekly newspaper published in Magog, in Quebec's Estrie region, for the municipalities of the Memphrémagog regional county municipality (MRC) around Lake Memphremagog. It is the surviving newspaper of record for Magog and its surrounding lake and mountain communities, a territory that combines a small industrial and commercial city with resort towns, ski country around Mount Orford and a string of agricultural villages along the Vermont border.
The paper is published by Icimédias, the Quebec community-press group that describes itself as the province's largest independent newspaper group, and its Magog office is led by publisher Gino Gaudreau. In its own presentation of the title, Icimédias says the paper covers the Memphrémagog sector and that its team of experienced journalists works to inform the community each week, honestly and objectively. The publisher's advertiser documentation lists eighteen communities in the paper's service area, from Magog and Orford to Stanstead, Potton, Eastman and North Hatley.
Le Reflet du Lac appears in print each week — the issues preserved by Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) are Wednesday-dated — and publishes continuously online at lerefletdulac.com. It is a free-distribution weekly: Icimédias' advertiser page reports that most copies reach readers through drop points in local businesses, with the remainder delivered by mail, including to businesses across the region.
The paper's exact founding date is reported differently by its own publisher and by the record left by a former owner, and both versions are on the public record. Icimédias, the current owner, presents Le Reflet du Lac as founded in 1987. An account sourced to Transcontinental Media, which owned the paper for two decades, gives a precise founding date of 6 November 1988. The paper's own volume numbering is consistent with a late-1980s start: the issue of 28 September 2022 preserved on BAnQ numérique is numbered volume 35, number 48. No independent founding document resolves the one-year discrepancy, so the founding is best dated to the late 1980s, with the two attributed claims noted.
What is documented is the paper's consolidation of the Magog market in the 1990s. Toward the end of 1996, the periodical became the property of the Médias Transcontinental group, and the following year it merged with Le Progrès de Magog, its competing Magog weekly. The merger left Le Reflet du Lac as the merged market's single French-language weekly, a position it has held since.
Under Transcontinental, the paper survived the reorganisation that followed the group's acquisition of Sun Media's Quebec weeklies. When Transcontinental announced the results of its Competition Bureau sale process on 3 September 2014, it closed twenty Quebec titles; in Estrie, Le Journal de Magog ceased publication while Le Reflet du Lac was expressly listed among the titles retained in the region.
The paper changed hands again in the largest of Transcontinental's divestitures. On 8 November 2017, TC Media announced the sale of twenty-one of its publications and their related web properties, along with its InMemoriam.ca site, to Icimédias inc.; the announcement names Le Progrès de Coaticook and Le Reflet du Lac as the Estrie titles in the transaction. In total, 140 employees of the various publications and 28 employees from TC Media's production team transferred to Icimédias, and Transcontinental concluded a multi-year agreement to keep printing and distributing all of the publications. The sale returned the Magog paper to Quebec ownership under a group led by its president, Renel Bouchard, with Marc-Noël Ouellette as managing director.
Le Reflet du Lac's editorial formula is that of a full-service community weekly, organised around the institutions of the Memphrémagog territory. Municipal affairs are its core beat: its reporters cover Magog city council and the region's town and township councils, and its pages carry the public notices through which those municipalities communicate with residents. A February 2023 issue preserved by BAnQ numérique, for example, leads its local coverage with a Superior Court judgment ordering a former director general of the Canton de Potton to pay compensatory and punitive damages to the municipality that had employed him — the kind of court and municipal-accountability reporting that rarely reaches provincial media.
Politics at the provincial level is covered riding by riding. For the October 2022 provincial election, the paper published a series of head-to-head interviews with the principal candidates in the Orford riding, and it co-organised, with the Memphrémagog chamber of commerce and the NousTV network, a candidates' debate held at Magog's Vieux Clocher venue, alongside a second, environment-focused debate in which it was also involved as part of the region's civic coverage. Its journalists' bylines in this period include Patrick Trudeau on the Orford campaign and Dany Jacques on municipal affairs.
Business and economic development form another documented strand, reflecting Magog's technology-cluster ambitions: the paper has covered Magog Technopole, the municipal innovation body, including its alliance with IBM Québec on cloud-computing development for local firms. Sports coverage is anchored by the Cantonniers de Magog of Quebec's M18 AAA hockey league, whose players and award finalists its sports reporting follows through the season. Around those pillars sit the community staples of a lake-country weekly: festivals and seasonal events such as the Fête des neiges and the Fête de l'eau, tourism and attraction news from the Eastern Townships, human-interest features, and the obituary and classified services through which readers mark local births, deaths and transactions.
The audience figures in circulation for Le Reflet du Lac are the publisher's own, published for advertisers, and are presented here as such rather than as audited data. Icimédias' advertiser page for the title reports 18,020 copies distributed per week across a territory population of 54,797, broken down as 13,445 copies distributed through 89 drop points and 4,575 copies distributed by mail, of which 1,467 go to businesses in the region. The paper's print masthead has declared a larger run: the issue of 28 September 2022 carries a figure of 25,692 copies. The two figures date from different presentations by the same publisher and are not reconciled in any public source.
The served territory, as listed by the publisher, comprises Austin, Ayer's Cliff, Bolton-Est, the Canton d'Orford, the Canton de Hatley, the Canton de Potton, the Canton de Stanstead, Eastman, Hatley, Magog, North Hatley, Ogden, Saint-Benoît-du-Lac, Saint-Étienne-de-Bolton, Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley, Stukely-Sud and the Ville de Stanstead — the full shoreline and hinterland of the Memphrémagog MRC. The same advertiser page reports the readership as evenly split between men and women, with half of readers aged 28 to 57 and 91 per cent identified as decision-makers in business — again, the publisher's own marketing data, not an audited measurement. Online, the advertiser page reports 93,197 monthly unique visitors and 137,649 monthly page views for the paper's platform.
The paper's digital home is lerefletdulac.com, where its journalism is published in web form alongside the print edition. BAnQ's catalogue of Quebec newspapers available online records two archival runs for the title: the Eureka database carries Le Reflet du Lac from 2004 to the present, and BAnQ numérique preserves the digital edition, catalogued as "Le Reflet du Lac.com," from 2015 through 2025 — a legal-deposit run that documents the paper's continued weekly publication into the mid-2020s. Individual issues in that collection, including those of 31 August 2022 and 15 February 2023, reproduce the full print paper with its masthead, advertising and local reporting intact.
The title is also one of the twenty-three local media presented on Icimédias' corporate site, which maintains a dedicated page for it with its coverage territory, distribution data and sales contacts — part of the group's model of selling local print and digital advertising as a single regional buy. Muck Rack's monitoring indexes the paper's journalists, including Dany Jacques, Patrick Trudeau and Pierre-Olivier Girard, whose bylined work spans municipal affairs, provincial politics, tourism and community events.
Le Reflet du Lac is owned by Icimédias inc. The group was formed in November 2017 when Marc-Noël Ouellette and Renel Bouchard acquired the twenty-one TC Media publications — a transaction Icimédias itself describes as making it, at that moment, the largest weekly newspaper group in Quebec. Its corporate history since then includes the 2019 acquisition of the Seaway News of Cornwall, the arrival of Mélanie Medeiros and Stéphane Legrand as shareholders and vice-presidents in 2022, the launch of Sherbrooke.info in 2024, the acquisition of L'Écho de Frontenac the same year, and the February 2025 acquisition of the Faste Communication agency. The group today presents twenty-three newspapers and multimedia platforms and describes itself as the largest independent press group in Quebec.
In Magog, the paper is published under Gino Gaudreau, named as its éditeur both by the publisher and in reference sources. Its newsroom works from the publisher's Magog office, with an editorial team of experienced journalists and a local sales team; Icimédias' page for the title names Geneviève Fournier and Caroline Gaudreau as its media-solutions advisors for local businesses. Journalists documented on the paper's recent mastheads and bylines include Dany Jacques, Patrick Trudeau and Pierre-Olivier Girard.
Le Reflet du Lac's office is at 53, rue Centre, Bureau 300, Magog, Quebec J1X 5B6, and the paper can be reached by telephone at 819 843-3500 — the address and number published by Icimédias for the title. Its website is lerefletdulac.com, where current articles and the digital edition are available; readers can also consult back issues through BAnQ numérique's legal-deposit collection. The print weekly is distributed free across the Memphrémagog territory through the drop points and mail distribution described by the publisher.
