About Legal 500

Legal 500: Legalease's Fleet Street Benchmark for Law Firms in More Than 100 Countries

Legal 500 is a London-based legal research, data and intelligence platform that benchmarks law firms and lawyers across more than 100 countries. Published by Legalease Ltd from 188 Fleet Street in London, it is one of the world's two best-known legal directories, describing itself as the world's leading legal services benchmarking platform. Each year its researchers review tens of thousands of law firm submissions, interview leading lawyers and analyse feedback from hundreds of thousands of clients to produce rankings that corporate buyers of legal services use to choose advisers.

Founded in 1987, Legal 500 has grown from a printed guide to UK law firms into a data-driven platform whose products include rankings, client satisfaction research, events and the GC Powerlist celebrating in-house counsel. Alongside its great rival Chambers and Partners — also headquartered in London — it has helped turn legal directory rankings into a permanent feature of how firms win and retain work.

Overview

The Legal 500 series ranks law firms and individual lawyers by jurisdiction and practice area, placing firms in tiers and highlighting leading individuals, next generation partners and rising stars. Editorial commentary accompanies the tables, explaining a firm's strengths, its notable matters and the lawyers clients praise. The rankings are free to consult at legal500.com, where users can compare firms by country, city and specialism, and read lawyer profiles and client testimonials.

The platform's stated purpose is to connect providers and users of legal services and to help both sides make informed decisions. For general counsel, it offers a starting point in markets they do not know personally. For firms, a strong set of Legal 500 rankings is market evidence they can put in front of clients, recruits and referral partners in other jurisdictions.

History and Founding

Legal 500 was founded in 1987 by John M. Pritchard, who became the first editor-in-chief of its publisher, Legalease Ltd. Early editions appeared as substantial printed volumes — The Legal 500: The Client's Guide to UK Law Firms was still being published by Legalease in hardcover in the 1990s — at a time when buyers of legal services had few independent sources of comparison beyond personal recommendation.

The business Pritchard founded expanded steadily in scope. The UK guide was joined by editions covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, the United States, Latin America and other regions, eventually passing the milestone of more than 100 countries that the platform cites today. The name itself — a reference to a defined list of leading firms — became shorthand in the profession for the directory as a whole, in the same way lawyers refer simply to being ranked in the Legal 500.

Ownership and Leadership

Legal 500 remains the flagship of Legalease Ltd, a privately held company registered in England and Wales and based at 188 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2AG — an address in the historic heart of both the legal profession and the old newspaper industry, a short walk from the Royal Courts of Justice and the Inns of Court. Since 2015 the company's managing director has been David Goulthorpe, with David Burgess as publishing director.

The company employs a substantial London team. Its LinkedIn presence describes a workforce in the 201–500 employee range, and the platform states that more than 150 researchers and analysts evaluate law firms. Editors lead research for each jurisdiction and practice area — Amy Ulliott, for example, is named as UK editor in the company's client research announcements, working with a managing editor for the UK — supported by technologists, data analysts and journalists who maintain the platform and its datasets.

Research Methodology

Research is the foundation of the Legal 500 model. The company states that each year its team reviews more than 60,000 law firm submissions, conducts thousands of interviews with leading lawyers and analyses confidential feedback from over 300,000 commercial law firm clients worldwide. Firms submit information about their matters, their teams and their referee clients, and researchers test those claims against what clients and peers actually say.

Client feedback is given particular prominence. Legal 500 collects structured satisfaction data on criteria visible across its online tables, including lawyer and team quality, billing and efficiency, sector knowledge and client service, and it reports net promoter style measures of how willingly clients recommend their firms. In announcing research into the UK's most recommended law firms, the company stressed that willingness to recommend is the strongest endorsement in a competitive market, and that client feedback sits at the heart of its research process.

Rankings and Coverage

Rankings cover the full range of commercial practice: corporate and commercial work, mergers and acquisitions and private equity, banking and finance, capital markets, dispute resolution and international arbitration, real estate, construction, employment, tax, intellectual property, technology, media and telecoms, insurance, energy and projects, shipping, and many more, together with coverage of barristers' sets in the UK and of private client and regional firms outside London.

Because the platform covers more than 100 countries, a multinational client can use a single methodology as a first screen in most major markets. The online presentation lets users compare tiers across firms in a city or country, drill into individual lawyer profiles, and see the client experience indicators attached to ranked firms — a level of structured comparison that goes considerably beyond the printed books from which the series grew.

Data Products and the Client Experience Index

Increasingly, Legalease sells not just visibility in rankings but the data behind them. Its Client Experience Index, marketed to law firms, uses the client feedback gathered during research to help firms understand how clients perceive them, benchmark their performance against competitors and identify opportunities to retain clients and win new ones. Eligibility for some published client research analyses requires firms to hold multiple Legal 500 rankings and to have received a requisite number of client responses.

This data orientation reflects a wider shift across the legal information industry from directories to intelligence platforms. Rankings attract the audience and generate the submissions and feedback; analytics products built on that unique dataset — which the company describes as unrivalled insight into client satisfaction, market perception and legal service performance — provide a growing commercial layer on top.

Publications Beyond the Rankings

Legalease is also a magazine publisher. Its titles have included Legal Business, a magazine covering the management and strategy of major law firms, and GC Magazine, aimed at general counsel. Legal Business temporarily ceased publishing in April 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic before resuming normal service in October 2020 — an episode that illustrated both the vulnerability of print trade publishing and the resilience of a title with a loyal senior readership.

The GC Powerlist, formerly known as the Corporate Counsel 100, publishes annually its selection of highly rated in-house lawyers in regions around the world. The Powerlist recognises that general counsel have become major buyers and shapers of legal services in their own right, and it gives Legalease a product that celebrates clients rather than the firms that serve them.

Events and the GC Powerlist Community

Events turn the Powerlist from a publication into a community. Legal 500 launched the GC Powerlist: UK 2025 at an event on 9 October in partnership with the law firm Kennedys, hosted at London's Walkie-Talkie building, where senior research editor Allan Cohen opened the evening before Kennedys' UK managing partner addressed the honourees. Those listed received certificates and were photographed to mark their inclusion, and the company presents the initiative as a platform for in-house counsel to connect as well as to be recognised.

Similar launches and events accompany Powerlist editions internationally, and Legal 500 runs a broader programme of events and conferences for the legal sector. For a research business, events serve several purposes at once: they reward and retain the senior audience whose feedback powers the research, they deepen relationships with sponsor firms, and they generate editorial content and market intelligence that feed back into the rankings operation.

Digital Platforms

Legal500.com is the centre of the modern business. Rankings, firm and lawyer profiles, editorial analysis, events coverage and data product information all sit on the one platform, which the company presents as data-driven and independent. Social channels, notably a LinkedIn following counted in the hundreds of thousands, distribute rankings announcements and research findings to the professional audience where it already spends time.

The platform's structure — searchable by jurisdiction, practice area and firm, with comparable data points across thousands of profiles — is what allows Legalease to describe itself as a benchmarking platform rather than a publisher alone. It also means rankings launches have become major online events for firms, which announce tier promotions and individual recognitions to clients within hours of publication.

Market Position and Recent Developments

Legal 500 competes most directly with Chambers and Partners, and practitioners routinely discuss the two together; in industry surveys Chambers is typically ranked first in importance with Legal 500 a clear second, and most large firms invest seriously in both submission processes. That duopoly at the top of the market has proved durable because both businesses rest on the same asset: large-scale, confidential client feedback that would be extremely difficult for a new entrant to replicate.

Recent development has focused on client research products, the Powerlist programme and the continued expansion of rankings coverage, including recognition categories that surface client advocacy as well as technical excellence. For worldnm.com, Legal 500 stands as one of Fleet Street's most successful specialist information exports: founded by John Pritchard in 1987, still published by Legalease from 188 Fleet Street, and now assessing firms in more than 100 countries using feedback from more than 300,000 clients a year.
