Legend 102.9 (CKLH)

Legend 102.9, broadcasting on 102.9 MHz as CKLH-FM, is an adult hits radio station based in Hamilton, Ontario. Owned by Whiteoaks Communications Group, the station plays a mix of pop and rock classics from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s under the slogan "Legends Play Here." Its studios are located at 25 Main Street West in downtown Hamilton, and its transmitter sits atop the Niagara Escarpment on King Road, near the boundary between Hamilton and Burlington. The station adopted its current identity on June 16, 2025, ending a four-year run as Bounce 102.9 under Bell Media and beginning a new chapter under independent ownership.

Overview

CKLH-FM operates at 102.9 MHz in HD Radio as a Class B station with an effective radiated power of 40,300 watts from a tower 122 metres above average terrain. Its broadcast area covers the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, the Waterloo Region, and the Niagara Region. The station's HD subchannels carry additional services: HD2 simulcasts CKTB, and HD3 carries Joy Radio.

The adult hits format is built around familiar, broadly appealing music spanning genres and decades, with an emphasis on Canadian hits alongside international pop and rock classics — the kind of wide-appeal library that suits the station's long history as a workplace-listening companion, from the K-Lite years to the present. The station's history mirrors the consolidation and recent fragmentation of Canadian radio ownership: launched by a local broadcaster in 1986, it passed through Telemedia, Standard Broadcasting, Astral Media, and Bell Media before being sold to Whiteoaks Communications Group as part of Bell's 2024 divestiture of 45 radio stations.

History

The station received CRTC approval on May 8, 1986, under Decision CRTC 86-434, and signed on October 7, 1986. It was launched by Armadale Communications, the owner of Hamilton AM station CKOC. The "LH" in the callsign honoured Les Horton, CKOC's first broadcast engineer. The launch format was easy listening, branded "K103 FM." (The 102.9 frequency had previously been home to an unrelated station, CJSH-FM, owned by the Hamilton Spectator, which operated from 1948 until shutting down in 1954.)

On June 1, 1992, CKLH flipped to adult contemporary and rebranded as "102.9 K-Lite," a identity built around "more music variety" for at-work listening that would define the station for nearly three decades. Ownership changed hands repeatedly through the 1990s and 2000s: Armadale sold the stations to London Communications in 1993; London sold them to Telemedia in 1999; Telemedia was acquired by Standard Broadcasting in 2002; and in October 2007 Astral Media acquired Standard Broadcasting's terrestrial radio and television assets, including CKLH. Shortly after the Astral takeover the station adopted a more Adult Top 40 presentation, but it returned to adult contemporary after Boxing Day 2009, around the time then-sister CJEZ in Toronto flipped from AC to adult hits as CHBM.

The Astral–Bell Media merger made CKLH a Bell Media station on July 5, 2013. As part of a mass format reorganization by Bell Media, on May 18, 2021, the station flipped to adult hits under the national "Bounce" branding, joining dozens of Bell stations repositioned the same day.

The Bell era ended with a landmark divestiture. On February 8, 2024, Bell announced a restructuring that included the sale of 45 of its 103 radio stations to seven buyers, subject to CRTC approval — with CKLH slated for sale to Whiteoaks Communications Group. Hearings on the purchase applications commenced on October 8, 2024, and the CRTC approved the sale on December 19, 2024, under Broadcasting Decision 2024-336. On June 16, 2025, Whiteoaks rebranded the station as "Legend 102.9," maintaining a similar adult hits format while introducing a refreshed identity. The launch was paired with the debut of Dream 105.7 in St. Catharines, another Whiteoaks acquisition from the Bell divestiture, and the two relaunches together signalled the company's intent to put its own stamp on the stations it had acquired.

Programming

Legend 102.9's adult hits format centres on a curated mix of pop and rock classics from the 1980s through the 2000s, with a notable emphasis on Canadian artists from those decades — a positioning captured by the "Legends Play Here" slogan. The format is music-intensive by design, built for at-work and in-car listening rather than heavy personality talk.

The station's morning show, hosted by Sunni & Hayes, has carried over through the ownership and branding changes and remains the anchor of the weekday schedule, airing on weekday mornings. The continuity of familiar morning and evening hosts through the Bounce-to-Legend transition was noted at the time of the 2025 relaunch as a deliberate effort to keep the station's audience through the changeover. Radio listings have also named personalities such as Jack Peets and Aiko Iwashita among the station's on-air team, while coverage of the relaunch noted that afternoon host Darrin Laidman also stayed on and that longtime Toronto personality and voiceover artist Taylor Kaye joined as midday host. Beyond the morning show, the schedule follows the adult hits template of broad-appeal music blocks with limited interruption, positioning the station as a workplace-listening companion. Specific full-day lineup details are not independently confirmed.

Coverage and audience

As a Class B station with 40,300 watts of effective radiated power from a 122-metre tower on the Niagara Escarpment, CKLH's 102.9 signal is positioned to serve Hamilton and reach across the western end of Lake Ontario. Its official broadcast area spans the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, the Waterloo Region, and the Niagara Region, and the escarpment transmitter site near the Hamilton–Burlington boundary gives it strong coverage of both cities. The downtown Hamilton studios at 25 Main Street West place the station's operations in the core of its home market.

The station's HD Radio subchannels extend its reach: HD2 carries a simulcast of CKTB, the St. Catharines news-talk station also owned by Whiteoaks, and HD3 carries Joy Radio, the company's Christian music service. In the Hamilton market the station competes for adult listeners with Corus's Energy 95.3 and Y108, among other signals. Current audience ratings are not publicly confirmed.

Ownership

CKLH-FM is owned by Whiteoaks Communications Group through Golden Horseshoe Broadcasting Limited. Whiteoaks is an Ontario-based broadcaster whose holdings include stations in the Hamilton, Niagara, and surrounding markets, along with the CKTB and Joy Radio services carried on CKLH's HD subchannels. The company's acquisition of CKLH from Bell Media in 2024–2025 was part of one of the largest radio divestitures in recent Canadian history, and the Legend 102.9 relaunch marked Whiteoaks's repositioning of the station under independent ownership.

The station's ownership lineage illustrates four decades of Canadian radio consolidation: Armadale Communications (1986–1993), London Communications (1993–1999), Telemedia (1999–2002), Standard Broadcasting (2002–2007), Astral Media (2007–2013), Bell Media (2013–2024), and Whiteoaks Communications Group (2024–present). Each transition left its mark on the station's format and branding, from the K-Lite adult contemporary years through the Bounce adult hits era to the current Legend identity. The station operates under CRTC licence, with its technical parameters and ownership transfers subject to commission approval.

Digital presence

Legend 102.9 maintains its online home at legend.fm, which carries a live stream of the station along with station information and promotional content. The station is present on social media under the Legend 102.9 branding, where it promotes its music programming and community presence. The stream is also available through third-party radio aggregators. A dedicated standalone mobile app for the station is not publicly confirmed.
