Lemonada Media
Lemonada Media is an American podcast network based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded in 2019 by Jessica Cordova Kramer and Stephanie Wittels Wachs, it produces and distributes narrative, interview and conversation podcasts built around the stated mission of making life less difficult — summarised in its own slogan, to make life suck less. Lemonada grew from a single programme about the opioid crisis into one of the leading independent podcast publishers in the United States, launching more than forty podcasts by 2023 and more than ninety in total according to later accounts, and it is now part of PodX Group, an international podcast company.
Founding and the Founders' Story
Lemonada's founding grew out of a shared personal experience. Jessica Cordova Kramer, a lawyer and podcast producer who had been founding executive producer of Crooked Media's Pod Save the People, had lost her younger brother to an accidental opioid overdose. Stephanie Wittels Wachs, an author and theatre director, had lost her younger brother, the comedian and writer Harris Wittels, to an overdose as well. Kramer heard Wittels Wachs interviewed about grief and loss on another podcast, recognised the parallels in their lives, and contacted her. After an initial conversation, the two agreed to make a podcast together about the opioid crisis from a personal perspective.
The company was formed in 2019, with each founder investing her own money to launch it, and was publicly announced in mid-2019 ahead of a September launch. They named it Lemonada, invoking the idea of making something sustaining out of lemons — the hard material life hands people — which became the organising principle for the network's programming.
Last Day and the Launch Slate
Lemonada's first podcast was Last Day, which premiered in October 2019, hosted by Wittels Wachs. The series examined the opioid crisis in the United States through personal stories, including the founders' own, and through reporting on treatment, policy and the systems around addiction. It was a deliberate choice to lead with the hardest subject in the catalogue, because it was the story the company existed to tell. The programme received industry honours, including Gracie Award recognition, and later expanded beyond opioids to other subjects Americans describe as epidemic problems.
The launch slate also included As Me with Sinéad, hosted by Sinéad Burke, and Good Kids: How Not to Raise an A**Hole, about parenting. At launch Lemonada partnered with Westwood One to distribute, sell and market its shows and build audiences across the network — an arrangement typical of independent networks that produce programmes while relying on a larger sales organisation for advertising representation.
Growth of the Catalogue
From three launch series, Lemonada expanded rapidly. By 2023 it had launched more than forty podcasts, and its catalogue came to span health, grief, parenting, politics, comedy, identity and celebrity conversation. Programmes frequently cited in accounts of the network include In the Bubble with Andy Slavitt, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic; Believe Her, a true crime series; Choice Words with Samantha Bee; Add to Cart with Kulap Vilaysack and SuChin Pak; Funny Cuz It's True with Elyse Myers; and The Letter, which the company co-produced and distributed.
A defining success was Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, in which the actor interviews older women about their lives. The programme spent twenty-nine consecutive days at number one on the Apple Podcasts charts and was named Apple's Podcast of the Year for 2023. Other chart-topping launches followed, including Blind Plea, which reached number one overall on Apple Podcasts, Fail Better with David Duchovny, and The Pink House with Sam Smith. In 2023 Sarah Silverman's podcast also moved to Lemonada for a new season. By 2022 both founders had been named among the most powerful people in podcasting by industry publications.
BEING Studios and the Audio Reality Format
Lemonada developed a format it calls audio reality through its BEING Studios arm, applying the structure of reality television to unscripted audio. Its series Being Trans and Being Golden followed groups of participants through their daily lives rather than relying only on studio interviews. Being Trans / Being Golden won three Webby Awards in 2023, and the format is cited by the company as an example of its willingness to develop new programme forms rather than only replicate established interview and narrative templates.
Editorial Approach
Lemonada describes its subject matter as real life: programmes that are funny, emotional and personal, designed to make listeners feel less alone with difficult experiences. Its catalogue repeatedly addresses subjects that traditional media often treat only as news problems — addiction, grief, illness, mental health, infertility, identity and caregiving — and approaches them through first-person storytelling and conversation, frequently with humour. The founders' premise was that audiences would engage with hard subjects if programmes offered honesty and hope rather than only diagnosis of what was wrong.
That approach also shaped casting. Lemonada built programmes around voices with cultural relevance, from prominent entertainers to specialists and advocates, and developed ideas with talent from the ground up. Production, distribution, monetisation and audience growth are handled in-house, which the company presents as its operating strength.
Books and Extensions Beyond Audio
In 2023 Lemonada announced Lemonada Books, a co-development imprint with Gallery Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, to develop books connected to its programmes and talent. The same year it partnered with Apple Books on a Lemonada Book Club, a free digital programme linking nonfiction books with its podcasts. The book ventures extended the network's model — identifying subjects and hosts with loyal audiences in audio, then developing those properties in print — and a book connected to Last Day was subsequently developed with Wittels Wachs as author.
Ownership and PodX Group
Lemonada operated for its first years as an independent, founder-led company. It later became part of PodX Group, described as a leading international podcast company, joining a group that holds podcast production businesses in several markets. Stephanie Wittels Wachs leads the company as chief executive; Jessica Cordova Kramer, who served as chief executive in the network's earlier years, co-founded the business and led its production operation. The company's own account describes its headquarters in distributed terms, reflecting a remote production workforce, while the batch record and the founders' base place it in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Awards and Recognition
Lemonada's programmes have received Gracie Awards and Webby Awards, including honours for Last Day, Believe Her, Choice Words with Samantha Bee and BEING Trans, a Webby for In the Bubble as a health, wellness and lifestyle podcast, and Apple's Podcast of the Year award for Wiser Than Me in 2023. Multiple series have reached number one on the Apple Podcasts overall chart at launch, a record the company cites as evidence of its audience development operation as well as its hosts' drawing power.
Digital Presence and Audience
Lemonada distributes its programmes across all major podcast platforms, operates a premium subscription offering, and markets its catalogue through its website at lemonadamedia.com, newsletters, live events and its book club. Its audience strategy depends on cross-promotion within the network: a listener acquired by a celebrity-led programme is introduced to the wider catalogue, and the company's social and newsletter channels are used to move audiences between shows.
Significance
Lemonada Media is significant as one of the most successful independent podcast networks founded in the late 2010s, and for the clarity of its editorial proposition. Where many networks organised around a genre — comedy, true crime, news — Lemonada organised around a purpose: rigorous, humane programmes about difficult parts of life, made to be useful and shareable. Its growth from a self-funded first series about the opioid epidemic to a catalogue of dozens of programmes, award-winning formats, a book imprint and a place within an international podcast group demonstrates how an independent audio company could scale without surrendering its founding identity.
