About Life FM Gippsland

Life FM Gippsland

Life FM is a Christian community radio station broadcasting to the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. Operating under the callsign 3GCB on 103.9 MHz FM from Mount Tassie near Traralgon, with its studio and office in Sale, the station has been on air since October 2003. Owned by the not-for-profit Gippsland Christian Broadcasters, Life FM broadcasts uplifting, family-friendly music and messages around the clock — "delivering hope of a better life and future to every home in Gippsland", from Pakenham in the west to Orbost in the east.

Overview

Life FM broadcasts 24/7 on 103.9 FM as Gippsland's Christian radio voice. The station describes itself as a local not-for-profit Christian radio station working alongside local people and organisations to make a real difference, with music and programs that are family-friendly, uplifting and full of encouragement for everyday life. The callsign 3GCB encodes its owner: Gippsland Christian Broadcasters.

The station's coverage is unusually wide for a community broadcaster: from Pakenham on Melbourne's south-eastern fringe across the Latrobe Valley and through East Gippsland to Orbost near the New South Wales border — a span of some 300 kilometres. Song requests are taken weekday afternoons from 3 to 6 pm, and the station partners with Careline to provide support to listeners.

That Pakenham-to-Orbost footprint makes Life FM one of the most geographically ambitious community stations in Victoria. The Mount Tassie transmitter site, shared with other Gippsland broadcasters, gives the 103.9 signal a commanding position over the region — and the station's online stream carries it further still, to Gippslanders who have moved away but want to stay connected to home.

History

Life FM's origins lie in years of volunteer preparation. Gippsland Christian Broadcasters was established in 1999 under the leadership of Deb Bye, a former manager at ABC Gippsland, who served as chief executive until 2015. The group's newsletters from 2003 record the final push: the Australian Broadcasting Authority issued Life FM a temporary broadcasting licence from 3 October to 31 December 2003, during which the station had to demonstrate both the ability to run a working station and popular support.

The practical challenge was formidable. To get on air, the group needed its transmitter and technical gear installed and tested by 1 September — requiring some $90,000 raised in about seventy days, or roughly $1,300 a day. Members had already spent thousands of volunteer hours and dollars in preparation. The fundraising appeal asked every supporter to sign up new financial members, and the station's launch newsletter framed the effort as a community mission: making quality twenty-four-hour Christian broadcasting a reality in Gippsland.

Life FM first aired early on 29 October 2003. The permanent licence followed, and the station settled into its Sale studios with transmission from Mount Tassie. Early years were sustained by listener fundraising: a 2006 appeal set a $40,000 target, and the 2007 end-of-financial-year appeal raised $29,147 toward a $50,000 goal — achieved despite the station's transmitter running at quarter power for twenty-two of the appeal's thirty days during Gippsland's worst floods in thirty years. The newsletters noted it cost about $476 a day to keep the station running, covering transmitter site rental and the microwave link.

Those early newsletters paint a vivid picture of a station built on faith and frugality. Supporters were urged to pray and act; trivia nights at Garnsey Hall in Sale doubled as fundraisers; even sunscreen sales contributed five dollars a bottle to the cause. The 2007 appeal's shortfall against its $50,000 target was met not with despair but with trust — the station's leadership expressing confidence that provision would come, as it had through the floods that had cut the transmitter's power but not the listeners' loyalty.

David Braithwaite is the station's current manager, continuing the listener-supported model established under Deb Bye's leadership.

Programming

Life FM's schedule blends local Gippsland programming with imported Christian teaching and drama. The mix is deliberate: local voices for local issues, and world-class teaching and storytelling for spiritual depth — a combination that has defined the station since its 2003 launch. Local programs include "Gippsland Extra", the local affairs program hosted by Deb Bye, "Gippsland Perspective" covering local news and events, "Light Up Latrobe" and "Make Gippsland Great Again". Daily messages come from "A Different Perspective" with Berni Dymet, while imported teaching programs include "Christian Working Women" with Mary Whelchel, "Focus on the Family" and "Insight for Living" with Chuck Swindoll.

Radio drama is a distinctive feature: the station has aired the "Father Gilbert Mysteries", the radio adaptation of the "Left Behind" novel series, and "Amazing Grace". Music programming centres on uplifting contemporary Christian music, with weekday-afternoon song requests from 3 to 6 pm giving listeners a direct line to the studio. The drama programming sets Life FM apart from music-only Christian stations: serialised storytelling with production values that reward regular listening, in a tradition stretching back to radio's golden age.

Coverage and Audience

Life FM transmits on 103.9 FM from Mount Tassie, with a signal spanning Gippsland from Pakenham to Orbost — the Latrobe Valley cities of Traralgon, Morwell and Moe, the agricultural districts of West and South Gippsland, and the towns of East Gippsland through Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance and Orbost. The station streams online through its website, extending its reach beyond the FM footprint.

No independently published audience figures are available for Life FM, and the station makes no listenership claims; community stations are not covered by the commercial ratings system. Its audience is Gippsland's Christian community and the broader listenership drawn to positive, family-friendly programming — the supporters whose donations, at roughly $476 a day in operating costs, keep the station on air. The station's catchphrase, "a better Life for Gippsland", frames its audience relationship as a ministry rather than a market. Across a region stretching from Pakenham's suburban fringe to Orbost's forests, Life FM's listeners share little except the signal — dairy farmers, power-station workers, retirees, young families — united by the station's promise of hope and encouragement.

Ownership

Life FM is owned and operated by Gippsland Christian Broadcasters, a not-for-profit organisation. Deb Bye, the former ABC Gippsland manager, led the organisation as chief executive from 1999 to 2015, overseeing the station's launch and establishment; David Braithwaite serves as station manager. The station is listener-supported: fundraising appeals, donations (tax-deductible), memberships and sponsorships sustain the operation, with the station's newsletters documenting each appeal's progress toward its targets. The tax-deductibility of donations — a status the station's newsletters celebrated as recognition of its community value — underpins the fundraising model: every dollar given not only keeps the transmitter on the air but returns a benefit to the giver, in a virtuous circle that has sustained Life FM for more than two decades.

Digital Presence

Life FM's official website is lifefm.com.au, verified as the station's live online home, carrying the listen-live stream, program information, song requests, articles on faith and family life, and the Careline support link. The station maintains social media presences promoting its programs and community activity. Between its website, stream and social channels, Life FM keeps its region-wide community of faith connected — from Pakenham to Orbost — well beyond the 103.9 FM signal, a digital ministry matching its broadcast one. The website's articles on faith, family and everyday life extend the station's encouragement beyond the broadcast schedule, giving listeners reading material that complements what they hear on air.
