About Lime FM

Lime FM

Lime FM is the community Christian radio station of Mount Gambier, broadcasting on 104.9 FM to the Limestone Coast of South Australia and into south-west Victoria. Billed as "Mount Gambier's Positive Alternative," its mission is family-friendly, positive content — clean music with good messages — presented by volunteers and supported by local business sponsorship and grants. After a period in which the station drifted from its Christian roots, a new station manager appointed in 2023 began transitioning it back toward a hybrid format, positioning Lime FM for growth in the community.

Overview

104.9 Lime FM is the Limestone Coast's community Christian station, based in Mount Gambier. Its proposition is straightforward: a positive alternative to mainstream radio — music that is positive and clean, with messages the whole family can hear, alongside local news, weather, community service announcements, local music interviews, promotion of local events, church news and discussions relevant to listeners' lives. As a community station it relies on volunteers to keep it on air, with business support through sponsorship and grants. The funding model is the classic community-radio triangle: donated labour, local sponsors who want to reach the family audience, and the grants that keep the transmitter maintained and the licence compliant. For a Christian station, the volunteer base often overlaps with the church community — the presenters, the fundraisers and the prayer supporters drawn from the congregations the station serves. The station reaches the entire Limestone Coast and into western Victoria on 104.9 FM, and streams online.

History

Lime FM's history is one of identity and return. The station began as a Christian community broadcaster — part of the Rhema tradition of Christian radio in Australia — serving the Limestone Coast with faith-based programming and family-friendly music. The Rhema stations, which grew from the 1970s onward, form one of the distinctive strands of Australian community broadcasting: explicitly Christian, volunteer-run, and committed to the idea that the airwaves should carry a positive message. Lime FM's origins in that tradition gave it both a mission and an audience — the churches and Christian families of the Limestone Coast who wanted a station that reflected their values. Over time, as the mediaarts account of the station's 2023 transition put it, "Lime had gone away from its roots as a Christian radio station." The drift is a familiar story in community broadcasting: volunteer turnover, changing boards, the pressure to broaden appeal — and gradually the founding mission fades from the schedule. For a Christian station, the drift can be existential: the licence, the supporters and the volunteers were gathered around a faith mission, and a station that loses that mission can lose the community that sustains it. Wright's diagnosis was blunt — Lime had gone away from its roots — and the prescription was a deliberate return, managed carefully enough not to alienate the broader audience the station had built.

The return began in 2023 with the appointment of Chris Wright as station manager. Wright's radio career stretches back to the 1980s, when he worked as a RAAF radio presenter while stationed with the RAAF in Butterworth, Malaysia — military broadcasting, with its discipline and its captive audience, an unusual but formative start. He went on to stints with 8 Top FM (Territory FM) and 97.7 in Darwin, and spent ten years with RHEMA FM in Mount Gambier in various roles — including hosting breakfast and presenting an interview-based talk show. The Darwin years added commercial and community experience in a very different market; the return to the south-east in July 2022 was meant to be semi-retirement. In November 2022 he was invited onto the Lime FM board, which he accepted; when the previous station manager resigned, the boardroom wrestle began. He told God "a most definite no" — but the Sunday before his first board meeting, the board chairman, knowing nothing of the wrestle, told the church to stop doubting, that God would be with them. His wife touched him on the shoulder: "are you listening?" That, Wright says, is how he came to be station manager.

Under Wright, Lime FM is transitioning back toward its Christian roots — "not all the way back to Rhema days, but in the middle," as he puts it — with a hybrid format and a vision he describes as "simply to grow": to be positioned in the community, with feedback so far positive. The "middle" positioning is deliberate: Christian enough to reclaim the founding mission and the church audience, broad enough to remain the Limestone Coast's positive alternative for the general family listener. The bright, fresh rebranding that accompanied the new season signalled the intent: Lime FM as the Limestone Coast's positive alternative, unapologetic about its Christian identity but broad in its community appeal.

Programming

Lime FM broadcasts a mix of music and recorded programs with a positive, family-friendly filter: the latest local, national and international news, weather, community service announcements, local music interviews, promotion of local events, church news, and discussions and programs relevant to listeners' lives. The music policy is the station's signature — positive, clean, with good messages — an explicit alternative to songs with lyrics the station's audience doesn't want their children hearing. Sunday-morning preaching programs feature in the schedule, reflecting the Christian community at the station's core. As a volunteer-run community station, the programs are presented by local people for local people, with the access and participation that the community licence requires.

Coverage and Audience

Lime FM broadcasts on 104.9 FM across the Limestone Coast region of South Australia and into south-west Victoria — Mount Gambier, the surrounding district, and across the border toward Portland and the western Victorian towns. The cross-border reach reflects the Limestone Coast's geography: the transmission doesn't stop at the state line, and neither does the community. Its audience is the region's Christian community and the broader family audience seeking a positive alternative: parents who want clean listening for the car, churchgoers, and listeners who value the station's community-service ethos. In a Mount Gambier market served by commercial stations (Triple M and SAFM Limestone Coast), ABC South East SA and fellow community station 5GTR FM, Lime FM's point of difference is its Christian identity and its explicit positivity — the only station on the dial promising that what comes out of the speakers will be safe for the whole family.

Ownership

Lime FM is a community broadcasting service operated by its volunteer board and membership, holding a community broadcasting licence from the Australian Communications and Media Authority. It is run by volunteers under community governance, operating under the Community Broadcasting Codes of Practice. Funding comes from the classic community-radio mix: volunteer labour, local business sponsorship and grants. The 2023 board renewal — bringing Chris Wright from the boardroom to the manager's chair — reflects the governance activity that keeps community stations alive through their transitions.

Digital Presence

Lime FM maintains an official website at limefm.com.au — the row's listed website — with station information and streaming, and streams its 104.9 FM service online for listeners beyond the transmitter's reach. The station is listed on Australian radio directories and streaming aggregators. For a station that began in the Christian-radio tradition, drifted from its roots, and is now deliberately returning to them under a manager who came out of semi-retirement to take the job, the digital present is part of the growth vision: Lime FM positioned in the community, on the dial at 104.9 and on the stream, as Mount Gambier's positive alternative — the station the Limestone Coast can leave on with the kids in the car.
