About Longhoo Net

Longhoo Net

Longhoo Net, published at longhoo.net and known in Chinese as Longhu Wang, is the digital news portal of the Nanjing Daily Media Group in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province in east-central China. Operated in Nanjing by Jiangsu Longhoo Information Technology, it publishes Nanjing municipal news and the group's newspaper editions online, serving as the provincial capital's official city news gateway. That city-level role is what defines it. Longhoo Net is not the provincial portal for Jiangsu — that function belongs to China Jiangsu Net — and it is not a national commercial portal. It is the online arm of a municipal newspaper group, built to carry one city's news, one group's journalism and one capital city's public information to readers who increasingly read on screens rather than on paper.

Overview

At its core, Longhoo Net does two jobs at once. The first is news publishing: reporting and presenting news about Nanjing itself — municipal government, districts, transport, education, culture, sport and everyday city life. The second is edition publishing: putting the Nanjing Daily Media Group's newspaper content online, so that the journalism produced for print reaches an online audience in digital form. Those two jobs explain the portal's character. A purely commercial city website would chase traffic from anywhere; a municipal group portal is anchored to a place, a newsroom and a set of titles whose reputations were built in print long before websites existed.

The operator named in connection with the site, Jiangsu Longhoo Information Technology Co., Ltd, also appears as a news source in its own right. In March 2025, for example, releases issued in the company's name carried Nanjing news internationally, including coverage of the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing from 21 to 23 March 2025 — described as China's first hosting of the World Indoor Athletics Championships, following the 2015 Beijing World Athletics Championships. That example shows the wider function of a city portal in the 2020s: not only to inform local readers, but also to project the city's story — its events, development and image — to audiences well beyond Jiangsu.

The Parent Newspaper: Nanjing Daily

The anchor title behind the group is the Nanjing Daily. The Nanjing Daily is the official newspaper of the Nanjing Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, published by the Nanjing Media Group, with its headquarters recorded at 223 Longpan Middle Road, Nanjing. It was established on 15 March 1956, launching as a four-page newspaper. That founding date matters for Longhoo Net because it sets the depth of the institution behind the website: the portal is a digital layer on a newspaper tradition that, in its present title, goes back to the mid-1950s, and to a city whose press history is much older still.

The paper's own history was not uninterrupted. The Nanjing Daily came to an end on 11 February 1961. A successor, the New Nanjing Newspaper, was established by the Nanjing Municipal Revolutionary Committee on 1 February 1970, was rebranded as Nanjing Daily on 19 June 1971, and ceased publication in October of that period. The former name returned on 1 July 1979, again in a four-page newspaper format. That pattern — founding, suspension, revival under a related name, and restoration — is typical of Chinese municipal newspapers of that era, and it is part of the verified record that Longhoo Net inherits. When the group's journalism appears online today, it carries the name of a title that readers in Nanjing have known, in one form or another, for decades.

Nanjing: The City Behind the Portal

Nanjing gives Longhoo Net an unusually rich news territory. The city is the capital of Jiangsu province, a port on the Yangtze River (Chang Jiang) and, in Encyclopaedia Britannica's description, a major industrial and communications centre in east-central China. It has 11 districts and an administrative area of about 6,600 square kilometres. The 2020 census recorded a population of 9,341,685, and a population of 9,423,400 was recorded as of 2021 — a readership base of more than nine million people in the home city alone, before any reader elsewhere in Jiangsu, China or abroad is counted.

Few Chinese cities carry as much historical weight. Situated in the Yangtze River Delta in the southwestern corner of Jiangsu, Nanjing served as the capital of various Chinese dynasties, kingdoms and republican governments from the 3rd century to 1949. The name Nanjing, meaning "Southern Capital," was introduced in 1403 during the Ming dynasty. Sun Quan made the city — then Jianye — the capital of the kingdom of Wu from 229 to 280, the Eastern Jin dynasty chose it again in 317, and successive southern dynasties followed. In the modern era, Nanjing was proclaimed the seat of the provisional government of the Republic of China after the revolution that began in 1911, and it served as the Republic's capital in the Nanjing decade after 1927. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in October 1949 — the People's Liberation Army had entered Nanjing on 23 April 1949 — the city was initially a province-level municipality, then merged into Jiangsu and again became the provincial capital, a status it retains today. A city news portal in Nanjing therefore covers a place that is simultaneously a working provincial capital, a major industrial city, a university and research centre, and one of China's great historic capitals.

News Coverage

Longhoo Net's coverage follows from that territory. Its central beat is municipal news: the decisions and services of the city government, the life of its 11 districts, and the developments that change how more than nine million residents live, travel, study and work. Around that core sits the wider coverage a capital-city group portal is expected to carry — Jiangsu provincial news where it affects Nanjing, national news of public importance, and the cultural, sporting and economic stories in which Nanjing itself is the subject. The March 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships are a clear example of the last category: a global sporting event staged at the Nanjing Cube indoor stadium, presented in Longhoo-linked releases as a moment when a historical capital presented itself as a modern sports metropolis integrating cultural heritage with urban development through sport.

Culture is a recurring part of the story as well. The parent organisation, also styled the Nanjing Newspaper Media Group, produces work beyond daily news: in November 2024 the group officially launched the ecological documentary A Chorus of Frogs. For a portal reader, that breadth matters. The same group that publishes the day's municipal news also makes documentary and cultural content about the region's environment and heritage, and the digital portal is the natural home where those different kinds of output meet a single audience.

Digital Editions and Platforms

The digital-edition function is the most direct link between Longhoo Net and the printed newspaper. By publishing the group's newspaper editions online, the portal preserves the identity of the print titles — above all the Nanjing Daily — while removing the limits of print: an edition can be read after the paper copy has been recycled, from outside the city, and alongside newer online updates on the same subject. For municipal newspapers across China, that combination of a news website and digital editions became the standard way to keep an official title present in readers' daily habits as print circulation patterns changed.

Longhoo Net's status is also a regulated one. The portal is identified in connection with the Cyberspace Administration of China licensed lists for Jiangsu municipal news websites. In China's system, internet news information services are licensed, and a municipal group portal of this kind operates as a recognised news unit rather than as an unlicensed aggregator. That licensing context helps explain the portal's editorial shape: authoritative municipal information first, group journalism at its centre, and a clear institutional operator — Jiangsu Longhoo Information Technology — standing behind the site.

Organisation and Operation

Organisationally, Longhoo Net sits inside a familiar Chinese structure. At the top is the municipal newspaper group — the Nanjing Daily Media Group, also rendered as the Nanjing Newspaper Media Group and the Nanjing Media Group — whose flagship is the official municipal newspaper. Beneath that group, a specialised information-technology company, Jiangsu Longhoo Information Technology Co., Ltd, operates the portal in Nanjing. That division of labour, editorial group on one side and technology operator on the other, is how many Chinese city portals were built: journalists produce the news within the newspaper group, while a dedicated digital company runs the platform that publishes it.

The group's headquarters geography keeps the operation rooted in the city it covers. The Nanjing Daily's headquarters are recorded on Longpan Middle Road in Nanjing, in the urban core of the capital it reports on. For a municipal news organisation, proximity is part of the product: the newsroom covers the government, courts, schools, hospitals, transport networks and neighbourhoods of its own city, and its readers can judge its reporting against their own daily experience of the same streets and districts.

Audience and Reach

The natural audience begins with Nanjing's own population of more than 9.3 million, in a province, Jiangsu, that is among China's most populous and economically developed, and in a Yangtze River Delta region that is one of the country's largest economic zones. Within that audience, a municipal official portal serves several distinct groups at once: residents who need authoritative city information, officials and institutions who read the official newspaper of the municipal committee, businesses and professionals following the capital's economy, and former residents and Nanjing-connected readers elsewhere who follow the city from a distance.

The 2025 athletics releases issued under the Jiangsu Longhoo name show that the reach is deliberately wider than the city boundary. Distributed through international release channels in English as well as for domestic audiences, that coverage presented Nanjing's hosting of a world championship to readers who may never open the Chinese-language portal. In that sense Longhoo's audience work happens on two levels: the daily, Chinese-language service for Nanjing itself, and occasional outward-facing storytelling that uses major events to explain the city to the world.

Role in Nanjing and Jiangsu Media

Within Jiangsu's media system, levels matter. Provincial media speak for and to the whole province; municipal media speak for and to their city. Longhoo Net occupies the municipal level for the provincial capital. It is distinct from China Jiangsu Net, the provincial portal, just as the Nanjing Daily is distinct from the provincial party newspaper. That distinction is not a rivalry for its own sake — it reflects how Chinese local media are organised, with each level of party committee and government served by its own official titles, and each title responsible for its own territory.

For Nanjing specifically, the portal's role is to be the group's front door online: the place where the Nanjing Daily's authority, the group's editions and the city's news meet readers who start their day on a phone or computer. In a city that has been a capital under dynasties, a republic and now a province, that is a long civic tradition carried into a new medium — the official city newspaper, founded in its present form in 1956, publishing for a Yangtze River metropolis of more than nine million people through the digital portal that bears the Longhoo name.
