About Märkische Oderzeitung

Märkische Oderzeitung

The Markische Oderzeitung (MOZ) is a German regional daily newspaper published in Frankfurt (Oder), Brandenburg. Serving the districts along the Polish border in eastern Brandenburg, it is the leading daily of the Oder region, published by the Markisches Medienhaus within the Ulm-based Neue Pressegesellschaft (NPG) and available online at moz.de.

Overview

The Markische Oderzeitung appears Monday through Saturday and covers eastern Brandenburg along the Oder river: Frankfurt (Oder), the districts of Markisch-Oderland, Oder-Spree, Dahme-Spreewald's eastern parts, Barnim and the Uckermark. Its circulation area is largely identical with the former GDR district of Frankfurt (Oder), a region of around 600,000 inhabitants defined by the Polish border.

The paper was founded on 17 March 1990, the day before the first free elections in the GDR, as an independent daily emerging from the SED district paper Neuer Tag. It is published by the Markisches Medienhaus GmbH & Co. KG, which is owned by the Frankfurter Mediengesellschaft, itself wholly owned by the Neue Pressegesellschaft of Ulm, one of Germany's largest regional media groups. The paper publishes twelve local editions with around 240,000 readers, and its sold circulation was around 67,400 copies in 2018, a decline of 50 percent since 1998.

The MOZ also publishes the advertising journals Markischer Sonntag and Marker, along with local titles including the Oranienburger Generalanzeiger and the Hennigsdorfer Generalanzeiger. Its moz.de portal is the leading online news source for eastern Brandenburg.

History

The Markische Oderzeitung was founded on 17 March 1990 as the successor of Neuer Tag, the SED district paper for Frankfurt (Oder), which had been created in 1952 when the GDR abolished its federal states. Many editors of the Neuer Tag joined the new independent paper, carrying newsroom expertise into the democratic era. The founding, on the eve of the GDR's first free elections, symbolized the press's liberation.

In the 1990s the MOZ chronicled eastern Brandenburg's transformation: the collapse of the region's industries, the outmigration of young people, the development of Frankfurt (Oder) as a university city with the European University Viadrina, and the deepening of cross-border relations with Poland after the EU's eastern enlargement.

The paper's ownership evolved through the Markische Verlags- und Druckhaus, in which the Neue Pressegesellschaft and the Stuttgarter Zeitung Verlagsgesellschaft each held half the shares, until NPG took over all shares at the end of 2012. Since 2016 the company has operated as Markisches Medienhaus GmbH & Co. KG. The paper has documented the Oder region's recent chapters: the 1997 and subsequent Oder floods, the 2022 fish kill in the Oder that the MOZ reported early, and the region's economic stabilization.

Content

The MOZ's local journalism is organized around its twelve local editions, each serving a district or city of eastern Brandenburg with dense reporting: municipal and district councils, local courts, schools, clubs and community life. The paper's border location gives its journalism a distinctive dimension: reporting on Poland, cross-border commuting, trade, cultural exchange and the practical issues of life along the EU's internal border.

The paper covers the region's economy: the logistics sector around Frankfurt (Oder), the food industry, tourism in the Schorfheide and the Oderbruch, and the structural issues of a region that has stabilized after decades of decline. Environmental journalism follows the Oder river's ecology, the national park in the Uckermark, and the consequences of the 2022 environmental disaster in the river.

Culture pages cover the Kleist Forum in Frankfurt (Oder), the region's theaters and festivals, and the German-Polish cultural exchange, while sports coverage follows regional football and athletics. National and international news comes through the NPG group's central newsroom, and opinion pages address current affairs. The subscriber share of the paper's circulation is traditionally high, reflecting deep reader loyalty.

The 2022 Oder fish kill was a defining coverage moment: the MOZ's early reporting on the environmental disaster in the border river, its investigation of the causes, and its follow-up on the ecological recovery demonstrated the paper's watchdog role on its home river. This coverage reached national and Polish audiences and affirmed the paper's authority on Oder ecology.

The European University Viadrina gives Frankfurt (Oder)'s journalism an academic dimension: the paper covers the university's German-Polish studies, its research on border regions, and the student life of a binational university city. For a region where the border is the story, the Viadrina is both a subject and a resource.

Coverage & Audience

The Markische Oderzeitung circulates along the Polish border in eastern Brandenburg, a region of around 600,000 inhabitants that includes the university city of Frankfurt (Oder), the historic towns of the Uckermark, and the districts between Berlin and Poland. Its readership is anchored in the region's established communities, the university milieu of the Viadrina, cross-border commuters and professionals, and the agricultural and tourism sectors.

The paper's audience expects the MOZ to be the authority on border-region life: readers follow the development of German-Polish relations, the practicalities of cross-border work and shopping, and the region's infrastructure projects with close attention. The twelve local editions, with around 240,000 readers, give the paper exceptional reach in its area.

Print circulation was around 67,400 sold copies in 2018, half the 1998 level, while moz.de has grown into eastern Brandenburg's leading online news portal. The publisher pursues digital subscriptions and newsletters, working to serve the region's younger readers while retaining its loyal subscriber base.

Ownership

The Markische Oderzeitung is published by the Markisches Medienhaus GmbH & Co. KG of Frankfurt (Oder). According to the Media Ownership Monitor Germany, the publishing company is owned by the Frankfurter Mediengesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, which is wholly owned by the Neue Pressegesellschaft (NPG) mbH & Co. KG of Ulm, one of Germany's largest regional media groups.

NPG, founded in 1954, is owned in equal shares by Ebner Pressegesellschaft and ZVD Mediengesellschaft, placing the Oder paper within the Ebner publishing family's empire. The group's portfolio includes the Sudwest Presse of Ulm, the Stuttgarter Zeitung titles, the Lausitzer Rundschau and the Schwabisches Tagblatt, and its national content is produced centrally by the Neue Berliner Redaktionsgesellschaft.

The ownership chain consolidates editorial, printing, distribution and marketing operations under NPG's management. The group's backing provides the MOZ with stability and resources for the digital transition while the Frankfurt (Oder) newsroom produces the border region's journalism.

Digital Presence

The moz.de portal is eastern Brandenburg's leading online news source, publishing breaking news continuously alongside e-paper access, photo galleries, videos and live coverage of regional events. The paper's early reporting on the 2022 Oder fish kill demonstrated the portal's role as the region's fastest news source. Premium content is reserved for subscribers behind a paywall, while breaking news and selected stories remain freely accessible.

Mobile apps deliver the e-paper and push notifications, and the paper's social media channels distribute stories about the border region, Frankfurt (Oder) and the Oder river to engaged audiences. Newsletters on regional news and district topics build direct digital relationships with readers.

The digital strategy builds on the MOZ's border-region authority: no other outlet covers the German-Polish borderland with comparable depth. By combining this distinctive journalism with digital products, the paper aims to remain the indispensable daily of the Oder region.

The paper's German-Polish readership gives its digital products a cross-border dimension unusual for a regional daily: Polish readers in the border region follow the MOZ's coverage of shared concerns, from the Oder's ecology to cross-border transport, extending the paper's audience beyond the German side of the river.
