About MAIN FM

MAIN FM

MAINfm 94.9 is an award-winning community radio station broadcasting from Castlemaine in central Victoria, Australia. Operating under the callsign 3WMA on 94.9 MHz from studios in Halford Street, the station is owned by the not-for-profit Castlemaine District Radio Inc. and holds a Permanent Community Broadcasting Licence. Run by more than one hundred volunteer presenters broadcasting around the clock, MAINfm offers over seventy diverse shows each week spanning music of every stripe, talk, magazine programs, community news and specialist content — a schedule that has repeatedly won national recognition from the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia, including the Most Outstanding Small Station award.

Overview

MAINfm is the community voice of Castlemaine and the Mount Alexander Shire, broadcasting on 94.9 FM with an effective radiated power of 1000 watts. Its signal blankets Castlemaine and the surrounding central Victorian towns, and its web stream carries it worldwide. The station operates twenty-four hours a day: live and locally presented programming runs from early morning until midnight, with automated music filling the overnight hours. All presenters are volunteers — more than one hundred of them, aged from twelve-year-old juniors through to respected elders — and the weekly grid carries over seventy shows covering the full gamut of talk and music.

The station describes its purpose as "putting the community into radio", delivering high quality broadcasting seven days a week with presenters drawn from the local area and programs that reflect the community's diversity. As a full member of the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia, MAINfm operates within the national community broadcasting codes while keeping its editorial independence. Funding comes from listener subscriptions and memberships, local business sponsorships, donations and grants, including Victorian state government funding that in 2018 allowed the station to employ a Station Manager for the first time, followed by a Sponsorships and Fundraising Co-ordinator in 2019.

History

MAINfm's story begins with WMAfm — the call letters standing for Wireless Mount Alexander — founded by Ian Braybrook and Marilyn Bennet. The station first went to air on 7 April 2000, broadcasting from studios housed in the Old Castlemaine Gaol, a suitably atmospheric beginning for a station that would become known for its community roots. The callsign 3WMA encodes its identity: 3 for Victoria, WMA for Wireless Mount Alexander.

For its first fourteen years the station broadcast as WMA FM, building a loyal audience across the shire. In 2014 it changed its name to MAINfm, the name it carries today. The rebrand coincided with a period of growth and reinvention. Shortly after the rename, the station acquired a caravan and converted it into a remote broadcast studio, giving MAINfm the ability to take live outside broadcasts to community events and sports matches across the region. Then in late 2014 the station relocated its studios from the old gaol to the old hospital buildings in Halford Street, Castlemaine, where it remains based today at the Work Space Centre.

The station's development accelerated after 2018, when funding from the Victorian state government enabled MAINfm to employ a Station Manager — its first paid management role — and in 2019 to hire a Sponsorships and Fundraising Co-ordinator. These appointments professionalised the station's operations without diminishing its volunteer heart: the presenters, programmers and committee all remain unpaid community members.

MAINfm's trophy cabinet records its standing in Australian community radio. In 2016 it won the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia's Most Outstanding Small Station award, having been shortlisted alongside stations from across the country. In 2018 it won the CBAA award for best station fundraising campaign. In 2020 it repeated its greatest honour, taking out the CBAA's Most Outstanding Small Station Award again while also winning Best Fundraising Event for the "Here Comes the Sun" Radiothon — a remarkable run for a small regional station competing nationally.

Programming

MAINfm's weekly grid of more than seventy shows is programmed under the guidance of a Programming Coordinator and programming committee, and its range is deliberately broad. Music programming spans genres and eras — from specialist shows to broad-appeal blocks — while talk and magazine programs cover local issues, arts, health, disability, queer voices and community affairs. The station's own reports note programs such as "Around the Wireless", "Get Outta Town", "Trigger Warning", "No Agenda", "In Didj 'n' Us", "Queer and Now", "Hello Darling" and "5th & Vermouth", reflecting the eclecticism of its volunteer presenters.

Special programming is a hallmark. The station has produced shows dedicated to young voices through the Campbells Creek Primary School special and MAK radio featuring children aged four to six. It has run series celebrating women in central Victoria — "Extraordinary / Ordinary: Commemorating and celebrating women in Central Victoria" — alongside a major International Women's Day broadcast. A six-part series on the lived experience of people with disability in Mount Alexander Shire was produced as part of Able Radio. The station has celebrated Aus Music Week featuring home-grown artists, marked NAIDOC Week, observed the 16 Days of Activism against violence against women, and partnered with Castlemaine Community House for Pride celebrations.

Outside broadcasts bring the station into the streets. Its OB van and caravan studio have covered events including the Castlemaine Idyll music festival, the Castlemaine Billy Cart Challenge, Rotary Carols in the Park, the Castlemaine Fringe Festival, the Castlemaine State Festival opening night and art auctions at the Taproom. One distinctive claim to fame: MAINfm is one of only a few Australian community radio stations that operate behind prison walls, with programming connected to the local correctional community.

A beloved annual tradition is The MAIN Game, held each June — an Australian rules football match played as a station fundraiser, drawing the community together in a way that typifies MAINfm's embeddedness in Castlemaine life. The annual "Here Comes the Sun" Radiothon serves as the station's major fundraising event, recognised nationally in 2020 as the best fundraising event in community radio.

Coverage and Audience

MAINfm broadcasts on 94.9 FM with 1000 watts ERP from Castlemaine, covering the Mount Alexander Shire and much of central Victoria — Castlemaine itself, plus surrounding towns such as Harcourt, Maldon, Newstead, Chewton and the broader goldfields region. The station's online stream extends its reach to former residents, travelling listeners and anyone worldwide with an interest in the region's community life.

No independently published ratings figures exist for MAINfm, and the station makes no audience claims beyond its community footprint; community stations of its size are not measured by the commercial survey system. Its audience is best understood as the engaged community of the Mount Alexander Shire — the listeners who subscribe, sponsor, volunteer and turn up to The MAIN Game and the Radiothon. The station's repeated national awards, its more-than-one-hundred-strong volunteer base and its ability to sustain over seventy weekly shows all attest to a depth of community engagement that commercial metrics would struggle to capture.

Ownership

MAINfm is owned and operated by Castlemaine District Radio Inc., a not-for-profit incorporated association. There is no commercial owner and no network affiliation; the station is community owned and governed by an elected Committee of Management drawn from its membership. The committee is supported by a small number of paid roles — the Station Manager and Sponsorships and Fundraising Co-ordinator positions created after the 2018 state government funding — while the overwhelming majority of the station's workforce, including all on-air presenters, are volunteers.

The station's finances rest on the classic community-radio mix: annual memberships and subscriptions, listener donations, on-air sponsorships from local businesses, fundraising events such as The MAIN Game and the Radiothon, and project grants. Annual reports are published on the station's website, and governance documents including policies and the constitution are made available to members, reflecting the transparency obligations of a community licence holder. The station's postal address is PO Box 1070, Castlemaine VIC 3450.

Digital Presence

MAINfm's official website is mainfm.net — the address listed in its Wikipedia infobox and confirmed by station listings — where listeners find the live stream, program guide, program proposal forms, membership and sponsorship information, annual reports and governance documents. The stream is also distributed through the Community Broadcasting Network's streaming infrastructure. The station maintains an active social media presence under handles such as @949mainfm on Instagram and Facebook, where it promotes shows, outside broadcasts and fundraising events. Contact details published by the station include phone +61 3 5472 4376 and email info@mainfm.net. Between its website, stream and social channels, MAINfm keeps its community connected well beyond the 94.9 FM signal — a digital footprint that matches the ambition of a station that has twice been judged Australia's most outstanding small community broadcaster.
