About Marbacher Zeitung

Marbacher Zeitung

The Marbacher Zeitung is a regional daily newspaper published in Marbach am Neckar, Baden-Württemberg, the town of Friedrich Schiller's birth on the Neckar river north of Stuttgart. First published on 18 August 1845, it is one of the oldest newspapers in the Stuttgart region, with a publishing tradition that predates the German Empire itself. It appears Monday to Saturday as a local edition of the Stuttgarter Nachrichten, published by the Stuttgarter Nachrichten Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, with a sold circulation of around 5,000 copies. Its circulation area covers the entire Bottwartal valley and parts of the Neckar and Murr valleys, and it serves as the official gazette for the Ludwigsburg district. With its editorial office on König-Wilhelm-Platz in Marbach, the paper is the daily chronicle of the Schiller town and its surrounding wine-growing valleys, a presence in the community that stretches back nearly one hundred and eighty years to the first Postillon of 1845.

Overview

The Marbacher Zeitung serves Marbach am Neckar, the Schillerstadt of some 16,000 inhabitants famous as the birthplace of Friedrich Schiller and home to the Schiller National Museum and the German Literature Archive, together with the municipalities of the Bottwartal: Steinheim an der Murr, Großbottwar, Oberstenfeld, Beilstein and the other wine-growing towns and villages of the valley, as well as parts of the Neckar and Murr valleys. The paper appears Monday to Saturday in the Rhenish format, with a sold circulation reported at approximately 5,000 copies, and its readers include the valley's vintners, its commuters to Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg, and the literary visitors who pass through the Schiller town.

The editorial product is a cooperation characteristic of the Stuttgart press landscape: the supra-regional section is produced by the Stuttgarter Nachrichten, whose main shareholder the paper has been since 2003, while the local section is produced in cooperation with the Ludwigsburg editorial office of the Stuttgarter Zeitung and appears simultaneously in the Marbach edition of the Stuttgarter Zeitung as a head paper. The paper is the official gazette of the city of Marbach and the bulletin of the Ludwigsburg district. It is predominantly a subscription newspaper and is available as an e-paper.

History

The predecessor of the Marbacher Zeitung was the Postillon, first published on 18 August 1845 three times a week as the official gazette of the Marbach district authority, the Oberamtsblatt of the Schiller town. Its publishers changed six times in the early decades, from Friedrich Dürr through Christiane Barbara Dürr, Georg Heinrich Kostenbader, Johann Philipp Gattinger, Heinrich Gattinger and Adolf Remppis, reflecting the small-scale publishing economy of the nineteenth-century local press. The paper carried the name Der Postillon until 1925.

On the orders of the National Socialist regime, the paper was merged with the district's other newspapers, the Bottwartalboten and the Schozachtäler, and renamed the NS-Kreiszeitung in 1936/37, a renaming that was reversed after the district seat was lost. In 1941 the paper was forced to cease operations because of the war, and it resumed publication in 1949 in the young Federal Republic, rebuilding its readership in the Schiller town and the surrounding valley communities. In the postwar decades it re-established itself as the daily newspaper of Marbach and the Bottwartal, and since 2003 the Stuttgarter Nachrichten have been its main shareholder, integrating it into the Stuttgart newspaper group while preserving its Marbach masthead and its local editorial office on König-Wilhelm-Platz, where the joint editorial department for the Ludwigsburg district and the publishing house are seated. The head of the local editorial office is Karin Götz.

Coverage and Content

The Marbach local pages report on the town council of the Schiller town and the councils of the Bottwartal municipalities, on the Ludwigsburg district administration, and on the issues of a wine-growing valley in the Stuttgart region: the preservation of the steep vineyard slopes, housing construction in a sought-after residential area, transport connections to Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg, school provision, and the development of tourism around the Schiller heritage. The paper follows the cultural life of the Schiller town with particular attention: the Schiller National Museum, the German Literature Archive, the theater and concert programs, and the festivals that draw literary visitors from around the world.

The wine economy of the Bottwartal, with its vintners, wine cooperatives and wine festivals, is a standing subject, alongside the Mittelstand companies, craftspeople and retailers of the valley. The Bottwartal's vineyards, rising steeply from the valley floor, are among the distinctive landscapes of the Württemberg wine region, and the paper follows the vintners through the year from pruning to harvest, the wine festivals that mark the autumn, and the debates over the preservation of the terraced slopes. The paper reports on the clubs and associations, churches, schools and volunteer organizations, on local sports clubs through their leagues, and on the volunteer fire brigades. Police and court reporting, municipal announcements in its function as official gazette, event listings, and readers' letters complete the local offering. Marbach also lies in the circulation area of the Ludwigsburger Kreiszeitung, which likewise reports on local events, giving the town's readers two daily papers with Marbach coverage.

The supra-regional section from the Stuttgarter Nachrichten provides coverage of Baden-Württemberg state politics, national and international news, business and the economy, culture, and sports, produced by one of the state's major editorial organizations. Special pages mark local and state elections, the Schiller commemorations, the Christmas season, school enrollment and regional economic themes.

Organization and Ownership

The Marbacher Zeitung is published by the Stuttgarter Nachrichten Verlagsgesellschaft mbH, part of the Stuttgart newspaper group. The Stuttgarter Nachrichten publishing company is controlled through the media group's structures, and the Marbach title operates within this group as the local edition for Marbach and the Bottwartal, with the Stuttgarter Nachrichten as main shareholder since 2003. The managing director is Herbert Dachs.

The joint editorial department for the Ludwigsburg district and the publishing house are seated on König-Wilhelm-Platz in Marbach, with Karin Götz heading the local editorial office. The local section is produced in cooperation with the Ludwigsburg editorial office of the Stuttgarter Zeitung, appearing in both the Marbacher Zeitung and the Marbach edition of the Stuttgarter Zeitung. The paper's function as the official gazette for the Ludwigsburg district gives it a formal role in district communication. The local advertising market is served through the group's regional sales structures.

Digital Presence

The digital home of the Marbacher Zeitung is marbacher-zeitung.de, integrated into the digital portfolio of the Stuttgarter Nachrichten group, which carries current local news from Marbach and the Bottwartal alongside the group's wider regional coverage. Readers can take out print, digital and combined subscriptions through the site, and the e-paper edition reproduces each day's printed newspaper digitally for reading on computers, tablets and smartphones.

The group's news apps extend the paper's content to mobile readers, and the title reaches audiences through social media channels where local stories from Marbach and the Bottwartal are shared, from Schiller commemorations to wine festival announcements and sports results. Newsletters and push alerts keep subscribers informed of breaking local developments. The digital strategy follows the pattern of the German regional press: defending the subscription business while building digital reach, with the Marbach section's online presence serving readers in the Schiller town and the valley's wine-growing communities.
