About MDR Aktuell

MDR Aktuell

MDR Aktuell – Das Nachrichtenradio is the 24-hour news radio programme of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. Launched on 1 January 1992 as "MDR Info" and renamed on 1 May 2016, it broadcasts news and current affairs around the clock — and produces the "ARD Infonacht", the joint overnight news service rebroadcast by several other regional all-news stations. Its slogan is "Das Nachrichtenradio" ("The news radio"). It reaches 337,000 listeners (Media-Analyse II/2026).

Overview

MDR Aktuell is based at the MDR's Sendezentrum in Leipzig and broadcasts across the three MDR states on FM, DAB+, cable, satellite, and webradio. Programme director is Jana Hahn. Unlike the MDR's music waves, the news radio carries no advertising: its financing comes entirely from broadcasting fees. The MDR intendant is Ralf Ludwig.

History

MDR Aktuell was one of the seven radio programmes with which the MDR began at midnight on 1 January 1992. As "MDR Info", it was the broadcaster's information programme from the start — news without music and without advertising, a format that had no direct predecessor in the GDR's broadcasting system and had to build its audience from scratch in the reunification years.

For 24 years the station broadcast as MDR Info. On 1 May 2016, it was renamed "MDR Aktuell" — aligning the radio news brand with the MDR's television news branding ("MDR Aktuell" is also the name of the MDR's TV news programme). The rename was part of the broader 2016 MDR restructuring that also returned MDR Figaro to the name MDR Kultur. The programme itself did not change: it remained a pure news and information programme, supplemented by an online offer with current news, service information, and podcasts.

24 Years as MDR Info

The station's first name lasted nearly a quarter century — a long time in a medium that rebrands restlessly. "MDR Info", launched 1 January 1992, was the MDR's answer to a question every new broadcaster faced: how do you do serious news radio in a region whose previous information diet was the GDR's centrally controlled news? The answer was a format with no music and no advertising — just news, a radical proposition in 1992, when commercial radio was conquering the eastern states with hit music.

The 2016 rename to "MDR Aktuell" was about brand architecture, not programme change. The MDR's television news had long been called "MDR Aktuell"; bringing the radio news under the same name created a single, cross-media news brand — the kind of trimedial thinking the ARD was pushing across all its broadcasters. The programme, the Leipzig newsroom, and the audience continued uninterrupted; only the name on the dial changed.

The ARD Infonacht

MDR Aktuell's most distinctive institutional role is the "ARD Infonacht" — the joint overnight news programme. When the regional all-news stations of the ARD end their own programming at night, several of them switch to the Infonacht produced in Leipzig: a through-the-night news service that keeps the country's news radios supplied while their own newsrooms sleep.

The Infonacht is part of a system of shared night programming that is one of the ARD's quiet efficiencies. Just as the MDR's regional waves take turns producing the "ARD Abend" and "ARD-Hitnacht" for the music programmes, MDR Aktuell carries the night for the news programmes. For a broadcaster headquartered in Leipzig — the smallest of the ARD's large regional centres — these national responsibilities are a point of pride: the night watch of German public radio news is kept in Saxony.

News Radio in the ARD System

Every ARD broadcaster operates an information radio, and MDR Aktuell holds its own in distinguished company: NDR Info in the north, WDR 5 in North Rhine-Westphalia, BR24 in Bavaria, hr-info in Hesse, SWR Aktuell in the southwest, rbb24 Inforadio in Berlin-Brandenburg. Each has its own history and format; what unites them is the remit — serious, advertising-free news radio as a public service.

MDR Aktuell's particularity is its tri-state mandate: it must serve Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia with a single news programme, regionalising where it matters and speaking to all three states where it counts. The 77 FM transmitters — mostly low-power, stitched together into near-area-wide coverage — are the technical expression of this mandate: no single high-power station, but a carpet of local coverage.

Leipzig: The News Centre

MDR Aktuell's seat at the Sendezentrum Leipzig places it at the MDR's headquarters — the broadcaster's main centre, rebuilt from 1993 on the site of the former Leipzig slaughterhouse, with the first reconstructed building (the Alte Börse) occupied in February 1993 and the new central complex first broadcasting on 14 May 2000. Leipzig is also the historic home of German broadcasting in central Germany: the Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk AG of the Weimar Republic, the "Sender Leipzig" of the GDR era. The news radio's Leipzig base connects it to a century of broadcasting history.

The Economics of News Radio

MDR Aktuell's financing — broadcasting fees only, no advertising — is the purest expression of the public-service model. News radio is expensive: a 24-hour newsroom, correspondents, the Infonacht production. Commercially, it would not survive; as a fee-funded service, it does not have to. The absence of advertising is also editorial: the news wheel is never interrupted for a commercial break, and the programme never faces the advertiser pressure that commercial news-talk formats navigate. In an era of misinformation, the MDR presents this as a feature — news you can trust because nobody bought it.

Programming

MDR Aktuell is conceived as a pure news and information programme: 24 hours of news and current affairs, with the online offer extending the broadcast journalism into text, audio on demand, and podcasts. At night, the station produces the "ARD Infonacht" — the joint overnight news programme that several other ARD regional all-news stations take over. This gives the Leipzig newsroom a national role: when Germany's regional news radios go to bed, it is MDR Aktuell that keeps watch.

The station is broadcast nearly area-wide across the MDR's territory via 77 mostly low-power FM transmitters, supplemented by seven DAB+ frequencies at locations with sufficient digital coverage, plus cable, satellite, and webradio. The FM network's density — many small transmitters rather than a few large ones — reflects the topography and settlement structure of central Germany, where valleys and small towns need local coverage that a single high-power mast cannot provide.

Coverage and Audience

MDR Aktuell broadcasts in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia via FM (RDS: MDR_AKTUELL), DAB+, cable, satellite, and webradio, with podcasting extending its reach. Its 337,000 listeners (MA II/2026) reflect the steady audience for serious news radio in central Germany — smaller than the music waves, but loyal and demographically prized.

Ownership and Funding

MDR Aktuell is operated by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, the public-law broadcaster for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia and a member of the ARD, headquartered in Leipzig. Its financing comes entirely from broadcasting fees — a deliberate choice that keeps the newsroom independent of commercial pressure. The MDR intendant is Ralf Ludwig.

Digital Presence

MDR Aktuell's online presence is integrated into the MDR's digital platforms at mdr.de, with current news, service information, and podcasts; programme directories list the station under mdraktuell.de. Because the official domain has not been independently load-verified, the website field of this profile is left empty pending verification.
