About Media Perkebunan

Media Perkebunan

Media Perkebunan is an Indonesian plantation industry magazine published in Jakarta in the Indonesian language, serving the estate-crops sector of oil palm, rubber, sugar, coffee, cocoa, tea and other plantation commodities. Known to its community as Medbun, it marked its 27th anniversary in July 2024, placing its founding in 1997, and it operates today across print and a substantial news website at mediaperkebunan.id, which describes itself as the most complete plantation information website. The magazine gives the annual Medbun Award to plantation people, companies and organisations, organises and partners in industry events such as the Indonesian Palm Oil Stakeholders Conference, and has been led by figures at the centre of Indonesian plantation policy, including Gamal Nasir, the Director General of Plantations from 2010 to 2016, who served as its general leader.

Founding and Anniversary Record

The clearest public marker of the magazine's age is its own award ceremony. Reporting on mediaperkebunan.id states that the Medbun Award 2024 was presented in the framework of Media Perkebunan's 27th anniversary, on Thursday 18 July 2024, in Bandung. A 27th anniversary in 2024 places the magazine's birth in 1997, in the final year of the New Order and the onset of the Asian financial crisis, a period when plantation commodities were among the few reliable earners of foreign exchange for Indonesia. The edition record visible in its archive supports a long continuous run: its Teropong commentary on the political economy of sugar is identified with edition 151 of June 2016, and its January 2014 content with edition 122, a numbering consistent with a monthly magazine publishing since the late 1990s.

What the Magazine Covers

Media Perkebunan covers the whole world of the Indonesian perkebunan, the estate sector. Oil palm dominates, as it dominates the industry: smallholder replanting, ganoderma disease, fresh fruit bunch and crude palm oil prices, sustainability and certification, downstream processing and export markets. Around it the magazine ranges over the other estate crops, including sugar, the subject of a long Teropong essay on the political economy of cane and beet sugar in edition 151, rubber and estate-crop business generally. Its website organises the same material as a daily news service, with price reports, training announcements, company news and policy coverage, making the title both a monthly magazine and the sector's news wire.

The Medbun Award

The Medbun Award is the magazine's signature institution. At the 2024 award in Bandung, fifteen palm oil actors received Medbun Awards for achievement and contribution to the industry. Categories reported by the magazine included technology innovation, awarded to PT Riset Perkebunan Nusantara and PT Plantation Key Technology; human resources and smallholder training, to PT Musim Mas and PT Asian Agri; sustainability, to PT Musim Mas, PT Bumitama Gunajaya Agro and PTPN IV PalmCo; and corporate social responsibility, to Musim Mas, Bumitama, Asian Agri and PT Sampoerna Agro. Organisational appreciation went to GAPKI, the Indonesian Palm Oil Association, SPKS, the palm oil smallholders' union, and a producers' cooperative in Lubuk Linggau, while individual awards honoured campaigners and trainers including ganoderma training pioneer Dadang Gusyana. The Director General of Plantations, Andi Nur Alam Syah, in a written address delivered by his staff, described the award as Media Perkebunan's appreciation for plantation people actively building a sustainable palm oil economy, and hoped it would motivate multi-party synergy for national palm oil.

Leadership: Gamal Nasir and Hendra J. Purba

The magazine's leadership connects it directly to the state plantation establishment. Gamal Nasir, who served as Director General of Plantations at the Ministry of Agriculture from 2010 to 2016, was Media Perkebunan's general leader until the end of his life, and the magazine published his biography, Mengembalikan Kejayaan Perkebunan, Restoring the Glory of Plantations, launched after the fifth Indonesian Palm Oil Stakeholders Conference at Kubu Raya. At the launch, Hendra J. Purba, the magazine's business leader, explained that the book was made at Gamal's own request, to appear after his death, and recalled a man who had undergone dialysis three times a week for more than a decade while continuing to campaign energetically for the sector. Officials at the launch credited Gamal's generation with securing plantation budgets rising to trillions of rupiah, and remembered his signature on the recognition of farmers' associations and his consistent partisanship for farmers.

Smallholders at the Centre

A recurring theme of the magazine's coverage and honours is the smallholder. Indonesian smallholders manage around forty-two percent of the country's oil palm area, some 6.8 million hectares of 16.8 million, and the magazine reports intensively on the smallholder replanting programme, its financing of fifty million rupiah per two hectares in reported partnership cases, its training and its obstacles, including the land-legality problems of farmers whose plots fall inside designated forest areas. Awards to the smallholders' union SPKS and to cooperatives, alongside awards to the largest companies, reflect an editorial position that the sector's future depends on its millions of farming families as much as on its estates, a position its late general leader was remembered for championing.

Events and Industry Convening

Like other strong trade titles, Media Perkebunan works as a convener. It is associated with the Indonesian Palm Oil Stakeholders Conference, IPOSC, whose fifth edition at Kubu Raya framed the Gamal Nasir book launch, and its training coverage includes online training sessions on subjects such as ganoderma, the basal stem rot disease that significantly reduces oil palm productivity and lifespan, delivered with practitioner associations. Through awards, conferences and training, the magazine functions as connective tissue among companies, ministries, researchers, practitioner associations and farmer organisations.

The Website: mediaperkebunan.id

The magazine's digital home, mediaperkebunan.id, carries daily plantation journalism under the Media Perkebunan name: crude palm oil tender prices from KPBN Inacom, provincial fresh fruit bunch prices, training schedules, company and ministry news, and features syndicated with specialist partners. Its self-description as the most complete plantation information website in Indonesia is a claim about archive and coverage rather than a slogan, and the site preserves the print magazine's identity through rubric references, telling readers to read the full Teropong essay in the magazine's numbered editions. Social presence under the handle perkebunannews extends the brand to platforms its print readers' children use.

The Sector It Serves

The plantation sector is one of Indonesia's economic pillars, resilient even through the Covid period, when it continued to contribute positively and acted, in the words of a ministry secretary quoted by the magazine, as a social safety net. Indonesia is, with Malaysia, the source of eighty-five to ninety percent of global palm oil exports, and produced around 47.24 million tonnes of crude palm oil in 2025 from some 16.16 million hectares, figures the magazine's ecosystem reports and debates. A specialist magazine serving this sector speaks to an audience of estate managers, mill engineers, researchers, officials and farmers whose decisions move national export earnings, which is why a title like Media Perkebunan is read in ministries as well as in the field.

Place Among Indonesian Agriculture Magazines

Reference lists of Indonesian magazines place Media Perkebunan among the country's agriculture titles, alongside the TROBOS family and other sector publications based in Jakarta. Within that company its distinction is focus: while general agriculture magazines range across all farming, Media Perkebunan is the plantation specialist, with oil palm at its centre and the estate tradition of Java and the outer islands as its beat. Its longevity since 1997, its numbered monthly editions, its award and its alumni at the top of the Directorate General of Plantations mark it as an institution of the sector rather than merely a reporter on it.

Legacy and Continuing Role

Media Perkebunan's legacy, twenty-seven years after its founding, is institutional. It has chronicled the transformation of Indonesian plantations from a crisis-era foreign-exchange earner into the world's palm oil superpower sector, argued the smallholder case inside an industry often narrated by its largest companies, honoured the sector's innovators and trainers through the Medbun Award, and carried its print authority into a daily digital news service. For the plantation community, Medbun is both mirror and meeting place, and its history is inseparable from the modern history of the Indonesian estate industry itself.
