About MedSci
MedSci
MedSci, published in Chinese as 梅斯医学 at medsci.cn, is a Shanghai-based online platform for physicians and medical research, operated by MedSci Healthcare Holdings Limited. Founded in 2012, it grew into one of the largest and most active professional physician platforms in China before listing on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in April 2023, under stock code 2415. The platform provides clinical research news and tools, journal and conference information, career development and academic communication services for doctors, while also connecting pharmaceutical and medical device companies with those doctors. The company reported about 2.9 million registered physician users in 2022, and its Chinese-language site is a principal channel through which Chinese physicians follow medical research and continue their professional development.
Founding and company
MedSci was founded in 2012. Legal advisers to its initial public offering recorded that MedSci Healthcare Holdings Limited was incorporated in the Cayman Islands in 2012, the offshore structure commonly used by Chinese operating companies listing in Hong Kong, while the operating business and its platform are based in Shanghai. From the start, the company addressed a specific professional problem: Chinese physicians who needed, in Chinese, a reliable way to follow clinical research, evaluate journals and conferences, develop their academic careers and communicate with peers, in a health system where doctors' time for research and continuing education is tightly constrained.
The founder and chairman is Fabao Zhang. Speaking at the time of the listing in 2023, he said that MedSci plays a key role in the medical value chain, that going public was a milestone to better empower the development of the healthcare industry, and that the company would remain committed to improving healthcare quality through specialised academic content, data-driven evidence and platform technology. That statement summarises the company's self-image: not a general health news site for the public, but professional infrastructure for doctors and for the research system around them.
Investment before the listing
MedSci's growth was backed early by Qiming Venture Partners, a China venture capital firm with offices including Shanghai and Beijing. Qiming said it was MedSci's earliest investor, exclusively investing in the company's Series A financing in 2015, and that it continued to lead MedSci's Series B round in 2020. As of the initial public offering, Qiming remained one of MedSci's major investors, and it counted MedSci's listing as the sixth IPO among its portfolio companies that it had welcomed since the start of 2023. That financing history matters for understanding the platform at medsci.cn: the website readers see is the public face of a venture-backed company that spent eight years building a registered physician community before it reached the stock market.
The Hong Kong listing in April 2023
MedSci Healthcare Holdings Limited listed on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on 27 April 2023. Its global offering, announced on 17 April 2023, comprised 66,789,000 shares, subject to an over-allotment option, of which 6,679,000 shares were offered to the Hong Kong public, subject to reallocation; the Hong Kong public offering ran from 17 to 20 April 2023. The issue price was HK$9.10 per share, giving the company a market value of HK$5.53 billion at listing. Advisers to the offering recorded gross proceeds of approximately HK$608 million before any exercise of the over-allotment option, and the company's later interim report put the net proceeds from the April 2023 global offering at approximately HK$526.8 million.
The listing made MedSci a publicly traded representative of a category that is otherwise hard for investors and researchers to observe from outside: the professional physician platform. Its stock code is 2415, traded as 02415.HK, and its subsequent interim and annual reports, filed through the Hong Kong exchange, have become a continuing public record of how its physician platform, marketing and research-services businesses perform.
Scale of the physician community
The figures MedSci disclosed around its listing explain its market position. As of 2022, the MedSci platform had approximately 2.9 million registered physician users, and its average monthly active users reached approximately 2.7 million. Among those users, the number holding the title of associate-chief physician or above was around 530,000, which the company said represented 67.1 per cent of the total number of physicians in China who had obtained that senior title. In other words, MedSci's registered community was not only large in absolute terms; it reached a substantial share of the most senior stratum of China's medical profession.
Independent market research cited in connection with the listing reached a similar conclusion. According to Frost & Sullivan, as reported by the company's listing advisers, MedSci operates one of the largest online professional physician platforms in China, based on registered physician users and average monthly active users in 2021. The company itself says its registered user and active user numbers rank at the top of its industry. For a platform whose services depend on doctors actually returning to use them, the closeness of the monthly active figure to the registered figure disclosed for 2022 was presented as evidence of an unusually active professional community.
What the platform offers physicians
For physicians, MedSci is organised around the working needs of clinical research and academic life. Its site provides clinical research news and tools, information about journals and conferences, career development services and academic communication services. In practice that means a doctor can follow developments in a specialty, find where and how research is being published and presented, use tools that support the design and conduct of clinical research, and take part in the academic exchange through which reputations and collaborations in Chinese medicine are built. The directory record describes the Chinese-language site as a principal channel for medical research news and continuing education, which reflects this combination of news, reference information and professional services in one place.
The company's own description of its product offerings groups these services under physician platform solutions. At listing, MedSci summarised its offerings as physician platform solutions, precision omni-channel marketing solutions and real-world study — RWS — solutions, covering categories such as clinical research, physician career development and academic communications. The physician-facing platform is the foundation on which the other two businesses rest, because both depend on the trust and regular attention of the doctors registered on it.
Services for pharmaceutical and medical device companies
MedSci's second audience is industry. The company says it connects doctors, patients, and pharmaceutical and medical device companies through big data and artificial intelligence technology, providing precise digital marketing communication solutions intended to empower the healthcare ecosystem and improve healthcare quality. Its precision omni-channel marketing solutions allow drug and device makers to communicate with physicians digitally and in a targeted way, at a time when China's pharmaceutical and medical device markets are undergoing digital transformation and when traditional face-to-face promotion has become harder to sustain at scale.
Its RWS solutions address a different industry need: real-world studies, which use data from ordinary clinical practice rather than from controlled trials alone. Together with its clinical research support for doctors, this gives MedSci a position on both sides of the research relationship — helping physicians produce and communicate evidence, and helping companies generate and disseminate evidence about their products. Qiming's managing partner William Hu, commenting on the listing, framed the opportunity in those terms: the digitisation of medical research content and knowledge as a major trend that improves the communication efficiency of doctor research and of pharmaceutical companies' content, with advances in technologies such as artificial intelligence likely to promote digital medical research further.
Business performance and the effect of AI
MedSci's filings after listing show both the durability and the vulnerability of that model. In its 2025 interim report, the company recorded revenue from physician platform solutions of approximately RMB46.8 million for the six months ended 30 June 2025, a decrease of approximately 15 per cent period on period, which it attributed mainly to the popularisation of AI technology reducing demand for certain simple, language-based clinical research services. Looking forward, the group said it would further optimise that segment and was actively developing intelligence system products tailored to physicians at different levels, providing comprehensive intelligence-based clinical research services as a foundation for future growth.
That disclosure is significant for a profile of medsci.cn because it shows the platform adapting in public. The same artificial intelligence that the company invoked at its listing as a force promoting digital medical research also began to substitute for some of the simpler research-support services doctors had previously paid platforms to provide. MedSci's stated response — moving toward more comprehensive, intelligence-based services for physicians at different levels — is the direction its recent reporting sets out, rather than a retreat from the physician platform itself.
Shanghai base and audience
MedSci is based in Shanghai, the city given for it in the directory record and one of China's principal centres for pharmaceutical research, medical education and health-care investment. The PR Newswire release announcing its listing was datelined Shanghai, and its early and continuing investor, Qiming Venture Partners, is a China firm whose healthcare investing is centred on the same ecosystem. The platform's audience, however, is national: registered physicians across China use a Chinese-language service whose content — research news, journal and conference information, career and academic services — is relevant wherever in the country a doctor practises or publishes.
That national professional audience distinguishes MedSci from both consumer health websites, which address patients and the public, and from the websites of individual hospitals or medical journals, which address one institution's or one title's community. Medsci.cn addresses the profession itself, across institutions and specialties.
Standing and significance
MedSci's significance lies in the scale and seniority of the professional community assembled on a single Chinese-language platform, and in the fact that its progress can be followed in public filings. Founded in 2012, backed by Qiming from its Series A round in 2015, and listed in Hong Kong in April 2023 at a market value of HK$5.53 billion, it had by 2022 registered about 2.9 million physician users, including around 530,000 at associate-chief level or above. According to Frost & Sullivan, that made it one of China's largest online professional physician platforms by registered users and monthly active users.
For anyone researching Chinese medicine — how doctors keep up with research, how pharmaceutical knowledge reaches prescribers, or how real-world evidence is produced — MedSci is one of the central platforms to understand. Its website at medsci.cn is where that system meets its users: a Shanghai-based service, in Chinese, for the physicians on whom the rest of the business depends.
