About MIBA

MIBA

MIBA is the leading German-language magazine for model railways, published in Munich by the VGB Verlagsgruppe Bahn — since July 2020 part of the Munich publishing house GeraNova Bruckmann. The name is the abbreviation of Miniaturbahnen, the title of the first issue, which appeared in the summer of 1948 — making MIBA one of Germany's oldest continuously published special-interest magazines. Founded by Werner Walter Weinstötter together with Heinz Bingel and Joachim Kleinknecht, the monthly title (ISSN 1430-886X) covers the model-railway hobby in all its facets: new products, layout construction, digital control, scenery, and the prototypes that inspire the models. With the MIBA-Spezial special series — running since 1989 with more than 150 issues — and the annual "Das Goldene Gleis" award, presented together with the sister magazine Modelleisenbahner, MIBA stands at the center of the German-speaking model-railway world.

Overview

The magazine publishes monthly (thirteen issues a year, the classic German rhythm of monthly plus one), addressing the model-railway hobbyist from beginner to expert. Its editorial program covers the full spectrum of the hobby: product news from the model manufacturers — Märklin, Roco, Fleischmann, Trix, Piko, Lenz, and the many small-series producers — presented in the annual new-products special timed to the Nuremberg Toy Fair; layout reports, where the magazine visits notable model railways and documents their construction; technique articles on scenery, track laying, wiring, and digital control (DCC); and prototype reporting on real railways that provides the inspiration for the models.

The readership is the German-speaking model-railway community: club members and lone builders, collectors and operators, the enthusiasts who fill their basements and attics with H0, N, TT, Z, and 0 gauge layouts. The magazine's authority rests on its editorial continuity and its close relationship with the manufacturers: the "Das Goldene Gleis" (The Golden Track) prize, awarded annually together with the sister title Modelleisenbahner, honors the model-railway producers — a manufacturer award that the industry takes seriously.

The MIBA-Spezial series, published since 1989 alongside the monthly issues, treats individual themes of the model-railway world in monographic depth — more than 150 issues by 2026. The MIBA Modellbahn Praxis book series extends the brand into how-to publishing. Together, the monthly magazine, the specials, and the prize make MIBA the institutional center of the hobby's media landscape.

History

The founding of MIBA goes back to Werner Walter Weinstötter. Together with Heinz Bingel and Joachim Kleinknecht, he brought out the first issue in the summer of 1948 under the title Miniaturbahnen. The first edition, in DIN A5 format, ran to 7,000 copies and cost DM 1.50. Until Weinstötter received his own publishing license in 1949, the magazine was published by the Nuremberg Verlag Frauenwelt of Rosine Speicher — a reminder of the licensing regime of the occupation years, when every new publication needed an Allied license.

From 1951 to 1968, MIBA appeared sixteen times a year; it was then switched to thirteen issues annually. The editorial office was based in Nuremberg until 2009. Weinstötter led the MIBA-Verlag until 1983; Michael Meinhold took over until 1987 and, after an interruption, again from 1992. Later, Thomas Hilge and Martin Knaden served as long-standing editors-in-chief of MIBA. On the occasion of the DB anniversary celebrations in 1985, a special issue was produced for the first time; since 1989, the MIBA-Spezial series has appeared regularly alongside the monthly issues. Before that, there had already been individual issues on particularly interesting model-railway layouts — such as the "Repa-Bahn" of Rolf Ertmer, famous at the time for its high prototype fidelity.

In 1996, the MIBA-Verlag joined the WAZ group. In 2001, the merger of the MIBA-Verlag and the Hermann-Merker-Verlag (publisher of the Eisenbahn-Journal) created the Verlagsgruppe Bahn, based in Fürstenfeldbruck — later in Munich — which also took over the Modelleisenbahner. The VGB, owned by the Funke Mediengruppe until 2020, was acquired by the Munich publishing house GeraNova Bruckmann on July 1, 2020; the MIBA editorial office has been based in Munich since then, and works in close cooperation with the SWR television program Eisenbahn-Romantik. Since 2026, Stefan Alkofer — who also heads the Modelleisenbahner — has been editor-in-chief of MIBA.

Coverage and Content

The magazine's coverage is organized around the hobby's core activities. Product journalism is the largest beat: new models from the manufacturers are presented, tested, and evaluated — the annual new-products special for the Nuremberg Toy Fair being the year's most important issue for the industry. The manufacturer reports go beyond the catalog: factory visits, development stories, and the technical background of new digital decoders and sound systems.

Layout construction is the heart of the magazine: reports on notable model railways, from small shelf layouts to large club installations, documented with track plans, construction photos, and technique descriptions. The technique sections teach the craft: scenery building, track laying and ballasting, wiring and digital control, weathering, and the detailing that turns a collection of models into a convincing miniature world. Prototype articles on real railways — historic and contemporary — provide the reference material for the modelers.

The MIBA-Spezial issues treat single themes in monographic depth: a prototype railway, a modeling technique, a manufacturer, or a layout project, each explored across a full special issue. The annual new-products special at the Nuremberg Toy Fair documents the year's innovations. Together with the sister magazine Modelleisenbahner, MIBA awards the annual "Das Goldene Gleis" prize to model-railway producers — the industry's recognition of outstanding products.

Organization and Ownership

MIBA is published by the VGB Verlagsgruppe Bahn GmbH, based in Munich. Founded on August 11, 1998 (the merger taking effect in 2001), the VGB is a special-interest publisher that has belonged to the Munich publishing house GeraNova Bruckmann since July 1, 2020; the managing director is Clemens Schüssler. The VGB's magazine portfolio includes MIBA, Modelleisenbahner, Digitale Modellbahn, and Eisenbahn-Romantik, and it cooperates with the SWR television program Eisenbahn-Romantik and its club.

The editorial office of MIBA was based in Nuremberg until 2009 and is now located in Munich, working in the VGB's Munich operations. Since 2026, Stefan Alkofer has been editor-in-chief of MIBA, also heading the sister magazine Modelleisenbahner; his predecessors include Martin Knaden and Thomas Hilge as long-standing editors, and Michael Meinhold in the MIBA-Verlag era.

Circulation figures for the current year are not publicly confirmed in freely available sources. The commercial model is that of a special-interest magazine: subscriptions and newsstand sales to the model-railway community, advertising from the model manufacturers and the hobby trade, and the special-issue and book program (MIBA-Spezial, MIBA Modellbahn Praxis) that extends the brand beyond the monthly rhythm.

Digital Presence

The magazine's digital home is miba.de, the VGB's portal for the model-railway title, integrated into the vgbahn.de publishing-group presence. The digital offering extends the monthly magazine: product news, event dates, and the special-issue program are presented online, and the brand's content circulates through the hobby's forums and social-media groups, where MIBA's layout reports and technique articles are discussed by the community.

The VGB's cooperation with the SWR program Eisenbahn-Romantik gives the brand a television dimension: the magazine and the program serve the same railway-enthusiast audience, and the publishing group's video activities (including the RioGrande and Eisenbahn-Romantik video brands absorbed into the VGB in 2004–2010) provide the moving-image complement to the print reporting. The "Das Goldene Gleis" prize, awarded jointly with the Modelleisenbahner, generates the brand's annual industry moment — the manufacturers' recognition that the two magazines' editors bestow. In print, online, and on stage, MIBA remains what it has been since 1948: the magazine of the German model-railway hobby.
