About Mike FM (CKDG)

Mike FM (CKDG)

Mike FM (CKDG-FM) is a multilingual radio station broadcasting from Montreal, Quebec, on 105.1 MHz — a Greek-rooted ethnic station with a twist: on weekday mornings and afternoons it sounds like an English-language classic-hits station, while the rest of its schedule serves Montreal's Greek, Armenian, Italian, Romanian, Ukrainian, and other communities. Owned by Groupe CHCR Inc. (formerly Canadian Hellenic Cable Radio) and on the air since 2004, the station grew out of decades of Greek cable radio and remains one of the city's most distinctive small broadcasters.

Overview

CKDG-FM is a commercial FM ethnic station licensed to Montreal, owned and operated by Groupe CHCR Inc. It broadcasts on 105.1 MHz (Class A) from Mount Royal — unusually, in mono rather than stereo, a deliberate choice to maximize signal-to-noise ratio for its listeners. Current listings give its average effective radiated power as 524 watts (directional) at 197.4 metres above average terrain; at licensing it operated at 141 watts average (224 peak).

The station's licence requires a multilingual service: 60 percent of programming must be ethnic programming, at least half of all programming must be in languages other than French and English, and the station must serve at least eight different cultural groups in at least six languages. Up to 35 percent of the schedule may be in English or French — time the station uses for its "Mike FM" English-language drive-time classic-hits programming.

History

The station's roots run deeper than its 2004 FM launch. For decades it operated as CHCR — Canadian Hellenic Cable Radio — a closed-circuit cable service serving Montreal's Greek community. On July 2, 2003, Canadian Hellenic Cable Radio Ltd. was awarded a CRTC licence for a new ethnic FM station in Montreal at 105.1 MHz, with programming primarily directed to the Greater Montreal Area's Greek-speaking community and additional service in Armenian, Croatian, Serbian, Russian, and Tagalog, as well as English and French.

CKDG-FM signed on the air in March 2004 as "Route 105" (first air date recorded as April 17, 2004), from studios at 5899 Parc Avenue in Montreal. In 2006, the station adopted a mainstream classic-hits music format as "MIKE FM" during morning and afternoon drive, with ethnic programming at all other times and on weekends — a hybrid strategy that used its English/French allowance to chase drive-time listeners. It was also the year the broadcast group's founder, John Daperis, died at age 87.

The station's signal ambitions surfaced in 2010: on May 13, it applied to the CRTC to move from 105.1 to 106.7 MHz — a frequency previously used by a local Aboriginal Voices repeater — and increase power from 141 to 407 watts, which would have extended its contours to the West Island, the east end, and the north and south shores. The application stalled amid complications, including a competing application from Evanov Communications for a new station on 106.7 serving Hudson, and CKDG withdrew the frequency-change application on February 6, 2012.

Regulatory scrutiny touched the station in 2010, when the CRTC granted only a short-term licence renewal (July 1, 2010 to August 31, 2013) to review compliance with Canadian talent development contribution obligations for 2004–2008. In 2013, owner Canadian Hellenic Cable Radio Ltd. (headed by Marie Griffiths) applied to reduce its ethnic-programming minimums — from 70 to 60 percent ethnic programming and from 60 to 50 percent third-language programming — for both CKDG and its sister station CKIN-FM, seeking more room for the English-language programming that was drawing listeners.

Programming

Mike FM's weekday schedule is a two-format hybrid. During morning and afternoon drive, the station airs English-language classic-hits programming — 1980s and 1990s hits with personality presentation — under the "Mike FM" brand. At all other times, the station reverts to its multilingual ethnic mission: Greek programming dominates, reflecting the station's Hellenic roots and its largest audience, alongside shows in Armenian, Italian, Romanian, Ukrainian, Spanish, and other languages serving Montreal's diverse communities.

The mono broadcast — unusual among FM stations — is a technical choice aimed at delivering the cleanest possible signal to listeners on modest receivers, many of them older members of the ethnic communities the station serves.

The Personalities: Patsikakis and the Drive-Time Shift

The Mike FM hybrid format was built around personalities as much as music. In 2011 the station installed Tasso Patsikakis and Patrick Henry Charles as hosts of the new drive-home show: Patsikakis had spent the previous 25 years at Q92, one of Montreal's leading English stations, while Charles had been a creative writer for the Q92 morning show, a former co-host of Virgin's breakfast show, and a CTV Montreal contributor. Their arrival signalled how seriously the small ethnic station took its English drive-time gambit — hiring established Montreal radio names to anchor the hours the CRTC's ethnic minimums allowed to be in English.

Patsikakis's comedy skits became a Mike FM signature, the kind of local-radio comedy that Montreal media watchers noted with affection — listeners tuning in for 1990s hits and his sketches were the audience the 2013 licence-renewal application was designed to serve. That same year, the station's founding family suffered a loss: Helene Daperis, who with her late husband John had pioneered third-language radio and television in Montreal and formed Groupe CHCR, died at age 98. The station is now operated by their daughter, Marie Griffiths, who serves as general manager and host.

The CKIN Sale: Losing a Sister Station

In August 2015 the CRTC approved the sale of CKIN-FM 106.3 — CKDG's sister station, Montreal's Haitian-oriented FM outlet — from Groupe CHCR to Neeti P. Ray, the owner of ethnic stations CINA Mississauga and CINA-FM Windsor. The price was $500,000, plus an $18,000 consulting contract for current management and $22,500 to take over the antenna lease (with another $150,000 factored in for assumed office-space lease obligations). The sale generated $41,430 in tangible benefits for the Canadian content development system, most of it directed to funds supporting Canadian music artists.

The transaction ended the sister-station relationship between CKIN and CKDG, but it stabilized the remaining operation: Griffiths told the CRTC the purchase money would go toward CKDG's financial health, eliminating its third-party debt. It was a small-station survival story in miniature — a family broadcaster selling one asset to secure another, in a market where ethnic radio competes for both audiences and advertising against the city's commercial giants.

Coverage and Audience

CKDG's signal from Mount Royal covers central Montreal; its modest power means reception is strongest in the urban core and nearby neighbourhoods with significant Greek and other ethnic populations. The station's audience is twofold: drive-time listeners tuning in for English classic hits, and ethnic-community listeners relying on it for Greek, Armenian, Italian, and other language programming unavailable elsewhere on the dial.

Ownership

CKDG-FM is owned and operated by Groupe CHCR Inc. (formerly Canadian Hellenic Cable Radio Ltd.), the company founded by John Daperis that ran the CHCR cable service for decades before winning the FM licence. Its sister station is CKIN-FM (106.3), Montreal's Haitian-oriented FM outlet. Contact points include studios at 245 Victoria Avenue, Suite 205, Westmount (Montréal), QC H3Z 2M5, phone 514-273-2481.

Digital Presence

Mike FM streams live online and maintains social media accounts under handles such as @1051Mike. Directory listings associate the station with the mikefm.ca web domain; the official site could not be independently verified in this research environment.

The station's history — from the CHCR cable years through the 2003 licence award, the Mike FM hybrid launch, and the withdrawn 106.7 application — is documented by the Canadian Communications Foundation's broadcasting-history.ca project and in Montreal media coverage of its licence proceedings.
