The Mississauga News is the local news outlet for Mississauga, Ontario, published by Metroland Media Group, a subsidiary of Torstar Corporation, and published online at mississauga.com. Founded in 1965 as a print community newspaper, it was for decades the city's newspaper of record — at its height a multi-edition weekly delivered across Canada's then fastest-growing big suburb — and it became, over time, the last local print newspaper standing in Mississauga as older rivals in Port Credit and Streetsville ceased publication. Print ended in September 2023, after 58 years, when Metroland stopped printing its Ontario community newspapers; the News has operated since then as a digital-only news website, publishing daily coverage of Mississauga city hall, Peel Regional Police, schools, development, courts, sport and community life. Its ISSN, 0834-6585, dates from the print era. The outlet is regularly described as having been the flagship newspaper of the Metroland community chain: Torstar's own reporting in the 2000s listed it among the group's largest publications, and its audited print circulation in December 2012 — 124,805 copies on Wednesdays and 122,874 on Fridays, according to BPA Worldwide figures — made it one of the biggest community newspapers in Canada.
The first issue of the Mississauga News appeared on June 23, 1965, founded by Ken Armstrong. The timing was striking: as the paper itself later recalled, and as a September 2023 retrospective in Modern Mississauga recounted, the publication introduced itself to "the citizens of South Peel," because the name Mississauga had not yet been adopted as the municipality's official name — the modern City of Mississauga was not incorporated until 1974, nearly a decade after the newspaper took its name. The News was not the area's first paper: the Streetsville Review and the Port Credit Weekly lineage (later the South Peel Weekly and Mississauga Times) were already publishing, but one by one those rivals closed, leaving the News as the city's sole local newspaper.
The masthead passed through a line of publishers documented in the paper's own retrospectives: founder Ken Armstrong, followed by Erik Watt, Brian Saracini, Elio Agostini, Douglas Regan and then Ron Lenyk, the paper's longest-serving publisher. Lenyk had joined the News in 1970 as a sports writer, became editor in 1971 and publisher in 1978, remaining until 2008. Ken Nugent served as publisher from 2009 to 2012 and Dana Robbins from 2013 to 2019. Through the suburban boom decades the paper published multiple editions per week, including a Thursday apartment edition, The Mississauga News This Week, and chronicled the transformation of farmland and villages into a city of more than 700,000 people — an era when its coverage of civic politics, arts, sports, crime and recreation made it the community's dominant print voice.
The final chapter of the print era arrived on September 15, 2023, when Metroland filed for protection under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and announced the end of print for its community newspapers. Metroland's Lee Ann Waterman addressed News readers in "A letter to our readers" published that day, and Modern Mississauga marked the moment with "A Requiem for The Mississauga News." The brand itself did not close: reporting continued without interruption at mississauga.com, and the News remains an active digital newsroom.
The Mississauga News covers the full range of city news: Mississauga city council and Peel regional council, the mayor's office, planning and development in a built-out city now redeveloping its malls and corridors, Peel Regional Police and court news, the Peel District and Dufferin-Peel Catholic school boards, MiWay transit, business, health, local sport, arts and community events, along with obituaries and service journalism such as weather, road closures and municipal service changes. Election coverage is a signature strength. In the run-up to Ontario's October 26, 2026 municipal elections, the News published ward-by-ward candidate questionnaires — putting identical questions to candidates on issues such as supportive housing, homelessness, property taxes and the Ridgeway Plaza debate in Ward 8 — invited mayoral candidates to set out their plans on housing, property standards and transit, and reported the city's enforcement campaign against illegal election signs, obtaining figures from the city showing 1,888 non-compliant signs impounded between September 27 and October 9, 2026. Coverage of the Mississauga mayoral debates held in late September and early October 2026 likewise appeared in its election package. The reporting is produced by Metroland staff journalists based in Mississauga, supplemented by Torstar network content.
The News addresses the residents of Mississauga, Ontario's third-largest city and one of the most multicultural municipalities in Canada, adjoining Toronto's western boundary. Its print-era reach was exceptional for a community title: BPA Worldwide recorded circulation of 124,805 copies for its Wednesday edition and 122,874 for its Friday edition in December 2012, delivered free across the city. Since September 2023 the audience has been digital, reached through mississauga.com, search and social distribution, and the outlet's social media channels. The subject matter of its 2026 election coverage — housing affordability, transit reliability, property standards enforcement, sign bylaws — reflects a readership concerned with the mature-suburb issues of a city whose greenfield growth era has ended and whose politics now turn on intensification, services and taxes.
Mississauga.com is the outlet's sole edition. The site carries continuously updated news in the standard Metroland digital format shared across Torstar's community network, with section pages for news, community, sports and lifestyle content, photo galleries and video, and integration with the group's other Peel and Greater Toronto Area titles such as the Brampton Guardian. The News maintains an active presence on social platforms, where its reporters and the brand account distribute stories and engage readers; its journalists' work is tracked by media-monitoring services such as Muck Rack, which recorded new Mississauga News articles throughout October 2026. Unlike two of Metroland's Halton titles, the Mississauga News was not among the four newspapers returned to print in the company's spring 2026 monthly print relaunch, and it remains online-only.
The Mississauga News is owned by Metroland Media Group Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Torstar Corporation. Metroland was formed in February 1981 from the merger of Metrospan Community Newspapers and Inland Publishing, and combined with CityMedia Group in September 2006. Torstar was acquired in 2020 by NordStar Capital LP, owned by Jordan Bitove and Paul Rivett, in a transaction valued at $52 million. Metroland's head office, at 3715 Laird Road, is in Mississauga itself. The September 2023 restructuring that ended the News's print edition was company-wide: Metroland sought protection under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, ended print for its Ontario community newspapers (71 titles lost their print editions, according to the Local News Map project), and cut approximately 605 jobs, about 60 percent of its workforce, including 68 of 200 journalists, according to the Review of Journalism. The Toronto Star was not part of the restructuring. Senior editorial leadership for Metroland's community brands rests with Lee Ann Waterman, Group Publisher, Community Brands and Vice-President Editorial. Metroland received more than $3.2 million under the Online News Act agreement with Google, according to Masthead Online, and in 2026 restarted its journalism internship program with 20 positions.
The Mississauga News is available free at www.mississauga.com, updated daily, and readers can contact the newsroom through the website's contact and news-tip facilities; no public business email address is published for the outlet. Metroland Media Group's head office is at 3715 Laird Road, Mississauga, Ontario. Print back issues of the News are held in local collections: the Mississauga Library System's newspaper collection includes the Mississauga News for 1965–1970 and its Port Credit and Streetsville predecessors, reflecting the title's six-decade role as the city's paper of record.
