About Mitchell Advocate

Mitchell Advocate

Overview

The Mitchell Advocate is a community weekly newspaper serving Mitchell, Ontario, and the surrounding municipality of West Perth in Perth County, in southwestern Ontario. It is one of the oldest continuously published community newspapers in the province: the Stratford-Perth Archives records that the Advocate began in 1860. Today the paper is published by Postmedia Network Canada Corp. as part of its group of Southwestern Ontario local news brands, appearing in print and online at mitchelladvocate.com.

The Advocate covers the life of a small agricultural service town and its rural hinterland: West Perth council business, local sports, schools, churches, service clubs, farm and community news, and the obituaries and milestones of local families. Within Postmedia's regional structure, its local reporting is combined with broader regional and provincial coverage on its digital platform.

History

The Advocate's beginnings reach back to the earliest years of Mitchell itself. References held by the Stratford-Perth Archives record the Mitchell newspaper as having begun in 1860, and Wikipedia's list of early Canadian newspapers likewise dates Mitchell's Advocate to 1860. In its first years the paper carried the fuller name The Mitchell Advocate and County of Perth General Advertiser; digitized issues under that title survive for 1860 to 1873. The archives hold the Advocate at its Mitchell division and at the main Stratford branch, with pre-1879 runs indexed, although most issues from 1879 to 1918 are missing from the archival collection — a common fate for small-town papers of the era, and one reason the Advocate's nineteenth-century record is fragmentary.

By the early twentieth century the Advocate was an established fixture of the town. The Stratford-Perth Archives' Campbell Family Photograph Collection notes that Harold Dent Davis (1872–1965) became editor of the Mitchell Advocate and its print shop. The paper's pages have long served as a repository of community memory: photographs from the Campbell family's celebrated local collection were reproduced in the Advocate, where journalist Andy Bader included a number of them in the paper, helping bring the archive of Mitchell's past to its readers.

In the era of chain ownership, the Advocate passed into the Sun Media group: Postmedia's own 2014 listing of Sun Media publications includes the Mitchell Advocate as a community weekly for Mitchell, Ontario. When Postmedia completed its acquisition of Sun Media's English-language newspapers in April 2015, the Advocate became a Postmedia title, alongside neighbouring Huron and Perth County weeklies such as the Clinton News Record, the Goderich Signal-Star and the Seaforth Huron Expositor. The paper survived the consolidation and closures that swept Ontario community publishing in the later 2010s — a period in which Postmedia closed a string of community papers, including the nearby Norwich Gazette and Petrolia Topic in 2018 — continuing to publish in print and online into the 2020s while many comparable titles disappeared.

Programming and Content

The Advocate's news coverage centres on the Municipality of West Perth: council decisions, development charges and municipal services in Mitchell and its surrounding wards. Local sport is a mainstay — minor baseball (the Mitchell Astros) and girls' fastball (the Mitchell U17 Hornets and their Fastballfest tournament at Keterson Park) receive detailed game coverage, much of it written and photographed by longtime Advocate journalist Andy Bader, whose bylines continue to appear in the paper in 2026. Community institutions feature prominently: the Rotary Club of Mitchell, the Mitchell Ministerial Association's food bank initiatives, the Salvation Army, the Royal Canadian Legion branch, and the West Perth Public Library all figure in its pages. In May 2025 the library board recorded that its press release and documentation on the value of Ontario libraries were "published in the Advocate both in print and digitally," an illustration of the paper's role as the community's bulletin board. A January–March 2025 Royal Canadian Legion roundup even picked up an Advocate story headlined "Advocate editor catches the Ace in progressive lottery," a reminder of how thoroughly the paper's staff are woven into the community they cover.

Alongside its local reporting, the Advocate's digital edition carries regional and provincial journalism from Postmedia's Southwestern Ontario newsrooms — the Windsor Star, London Free Press and neighbouring weeklies — as part of the company's shared platform, while the print edition remains focused on Mitchell and West Perth.

Audience and Reach

The Advocate's audience is Mitchell and the Municipality of West Perth, a community of roughly ten thousand people in Perth County whose economy is rooted in agriculture and food processing. For more than 165 years the paper has been the town's newspaper of record; the Stratford-Perth Archives continues to preserve its back issues as a primary source for local history, and genealogists and historians use its indexed early runs to trace Perth County families. No audited circulation figure for the Advocate is published, and none is claimed here; its reach rests on its position as the community's only local newspaper and on its digital availability through Postmedia's regional platform.

Digital Presence

The Advocate publishes online at mitchelladvocate.com. In September 2026 Postmedia announced the launch of a new digital platform for its Southwestern Ontario regional and local news brands, naming the Mitchell Advocate among them, alongside the Windsor Star, Chatham Daily News, London Free Press, Exeter Lakeshore Times-Advance, Goderich Signal-Star, Clinton News Record, Seaforth Huron Expositor, Woodstock Sentinel-Review, St. Thomas Times-Journal and Strathroy Age Dispatch. Postmedia said the rearchitected platform improves how readers discover and engage with its journalism, giving readers of local publications access to relevant stories from across the region and province while preserving each publication's distinct local voice. "Our local news brands have been at the heart of communities for generations, and we believe their role has never been more important," Postmedia president and chief executive officer Andrew MacLeod said in the September 2026 announcement, describing the investment as a commitment to ensuring the publications "continue to thrive." For a title founded in 1860, the platform relaunch is the latest chapter in a long adaptation from letterpress weekly to digital news brand. Advocate stories are also indexed by news-monitoring services such as Muck Rack, which records Andy Bader's Mitchell Advocate articles through June 2026, including West Perth's 2026 senior of the year presentation and summer fastball coverage.

Ownership and Organisation

The Mitchell Advocate is owned and published by Postmedia Network Canada Corp., Canada's largest newspaper publisher, headquartered in Toronto. It sits within the company's Southwestern Ontario community newspaper group, whose titles share digital infrastructure, regional content and advertising operations. The paper came to Postmedia through the company's 2015 acquisition of Sun Media's English-language newspapers, having been listed as a Sun Media community weekly in 2014. Locally, the Advocate's journalism is produced by a small community news staff; Andy Bader, a Mitchell journalist associated with the paper for many years as a reporter and photographer, continues to file its sports and community coverage.

Contact and Availability

The Mitchell Advocate publishes weekly in print in Mitchell, Ontario, and continuously online at mitchelladvocate.com. Subscriptions, advertising and news tips are handled through the website and through Postmedia's Southwestern Ontario community newspaper operations. The paper's historical back issues are held by the Stratford-Perth Archives at its Mitchell division and main Stratford branch, and early issues dating to 1860 have been digitized through Ontario's community newspaper digitization programs.
