MK Six
MK Six is a Tamil-language comedy and entertainment television channel based in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, owned by Madurai Krishna Limited, the Madurai Krishna Network. It is the comedy sister channel of MK TV, the network's general entertainment service, and a companion to the music channel MK Tunes. Launched after the network received its broadcast licences in 2016, with test transmissions beginning that October, MK Six devotes its schedule to light-hearted Tamil comedy — film comedy sequences, comedy shows and joke-based programmes with titles such as Comedy Junction, Gownder Comedy, Star Comedy, Puthupada Comedy and Jokes Zone. In a Tamil market where comedy is one of the most watched ingredients of television, MK Six represents the independent, Madurai-based end of the comedy channel segment, alongside the comedy services of far larger Chennai networks.
Overview
MK Six is a single-genre channel: comedy. Channel references describe it as a popular Tamil language channel by Madurai Krishna Limited showing light-hearted, comedy-centred shows, and Tamil channel listings classify it among the state's comedy channels, in the company of Adithya TV and Sirippoli. Its name follows the numbering style of its launch era, and its identity within the Madurai Krishna bouquet is the simplest of the three network channels to state: MK TV entertains, MK Tunes plays music, and MK Six makes viewers laugh. That clarity of purpose is typical of the genre channels that Tamil television produced in its expansion years, when networks unbundled the ingredients of general entertainment — music, movies, comedy — into dedicated services.
History and Launch
MK Six was created in the Madurai Krishna Network's expansion of 2016. The network, whose flagship MK TV had grown out of Madurai's Krishna TV local channel tradition dating back to 1990 under founder P. Sikkandar, obtained broadcast licences for two new channels, MK Six and MK Tunes, recorded in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's permissions for private satellite channels in 2016. Reports in October 2016 announced that both new channels had begun test transmissions from the Intelsat 17 satellite at 66 degrees East, downlinked through the Tata Communications teleport network from Chennai. At test stage the channels were telecasting Tamil songs and comedy programmes, with full 24-hour regular programming to start shortly afterwards, and both were free-to-air, with a satellite footprint covering India, Asia and the Middle East.
National platform carriage followed. In March 2017 the MK channels, including MK Six, were among the Tamil channels added to Tata Sky, giving the young comedy service distribution alongside the network's other channels on one of India's largest DTH platforms. Videocon d2h also carried MK Six in its Tamil line-up, at channel number 596 — placing the Madurai comedy channel directly within the Tamil entertainment block browsed by that platform's subscribers.
The Madurai Krishna Network
MK Six's owner, the Madurai Krishna Network, is a broadcaster with its roots in cable distribution. The company behind the channels, Madurai Krishna Network Private Limited, was described in National Company Law Appellate Tribunal proceedings in 2022 as a licensed local cable operator distributing television signals through fibre networks and set-top boxes in Tamil Nadu, which also operated three television channels — MK TV, MK Six and MK Tunes. The network grew from the Krishna TV local channel established in Madurai by P. Sikkandar, described as a pioneer of private local channel television in Tamil Nadu, whose brand had served Madurai viewers since 1990.
The network's headquarters are in Madurai, at Shenoy Nagar in the city, far from the Chennai base of almost every other Tamil broadcaster. The 2022 tribunal record, which concerned insolvency proceedings arising from a large set-top box procurement for the company's cable business, documents the financial pressures on the group in the digitisation era; it also confirms, as a matter of legal record, the three-channel structure — general entertainment, comedy and music — that MK Six completed in 2016.
Language and Genre
MK Six broadcasts in Tamil, and its genre is comedy in the Tamil popular tradition. That tradition is unusually rich: Tamil cinema has produced a celebrated line of film comedians whose sequences are watched, quoted and rewatched across generations, and Tamil television discovered early that comedy clips, comedy serials and stand-up-style programmes could hold audiences at almost any hour. A dedicated comedy channel therefore draws on two great reservoirs — the comedy tracks of Tamil films, and television's own stock of skits, jokes and comedy shows. MK Six was built to live in that space full-time, where a general entertainment channel could only visit it.
The channel's light-hearted positioning also distinguishes it within its own network. Where MK TV mixes serials, films and variety, MK Six promises a single mood. For channel surfers in the Tamil block of a DTH platform, that promise — comedy now, at whatever hour the viewer arrives — is the entire proposition, and it is the same proposition on which Tamil comedy channels such as Sirippoli and Adithya built their followings.
Programming
The programmes most consistently associated with MK Six in channel and advertising listings are its comedy strands. Comedy Junction serves as a flagship-style comedy show title, gathering comedy material in a junction format. Gownder Comedy trades on one of Tamil cinema's most beloved comic traditions, the comedy associated with the Goundamani style of film humour that Tamil audiences know simply by that name. Star Comedy collects comedy sequences built around stars, while Puthupada Comedy turns to the comedy of newer films — puthupada meaning new movie — keeping the channel's film-comedy library current. Jokes Zone rounds out the named strands with joke-based content.
Advertising references for the channel describe its shows as catering to all age groups and tastes, scheduled with audience availability in mind — the standard pattern of a comedy service, in which family viewing hours carry broader material and the channel's recognised strands anchor the day. At its test launch, the channel was already telecasting Tamil songs alongside comedy, a reminder that in Tamil television the boundary between a comedy channel and a film-content channel is porous: film songs and film comedy come from the same library, and MK Six's schedule grew out of exactly that shared stock of Tamil film material.
Availability and Distribution
MK Six began as a free-to-air channel on Intelsat 17 at 66 degrees East, on C-band, which made it available to cable headends and dish viewers across its India, Asia and Middle East footprint from its test period in October 2016. Its DTH carriage included Videocon d2h, where Tamil channel lists placed MK Six at channel number 596, and Tata Sky, which added the MK network's channels in March 2017 in a batch of Tamil launches. Free-to-air status combined with DTH carriage gave the channel the two routes to the Tamil audience that an independent channel needs: presence in the platform's Tamil neighbourhood for subscribers, and unrestricted availability for cable operators building their own Tamil packages.
Audience and Positioning
MK Six addresses the Tamil family audience in its leisure hours: viewers of all ages who turn to comedy between other programmes, after work and school, and in the evening prime-time band. Advertising material for the channel singles out prime time, from 8 pm to 11 pm, as its peak band, as with other entertainment channels, and describes a channel with extensive viewership built on its popular comedy shows. Its competitive set is the Tamil comedy segment — Adithya TV, the comedy channel of the Sun network stable, and Sirippoli, the Kalaignar network's 24-hour comedy channel launched in 2009 — against which MK Six stands as the independent entrant from Madurai, without a large network's fiction pipeline but with the same film-comedy library culture to draw on.
Within the Madurai Krishna bouquet, MK Six also performs a retention role. A household that comes to the network for MK TV's general entertainment can move to MK Six for comedy and MK Tunes for music without leaving the family's channel group — the bouquet logic that Tamil television's big groups pioneered and that even a three-channel Madurai network could reproduce in miniature.
The Tamil Comedy Context
MK Six's existence is explained by the economics of Tamil comedy. Comedy is the most reusable content in Tamil popular culture: a film comedy track costs a channel little compared with original fiction, loses none of its value with repetition, and appeals across the age and class divisions that fragment other genres. Tamil general channels had long treated comedy sequences as schedule filler of unusual power; dedicated channels were the logical next step, and by the time MK Six test-launched in 2016 the segment was established but still open to independents. Industry overviews of the Tamil market continued to list MK Six among the small set of recognised Tamil comedy channels, and among the general entertainment services of the Madurai Krishna network — evidence that the channel registered in the market's structure, not merely in its owner's plans.
Digital Presence
The Madurai Krishna network has maintained its channel presence through its own television websites, including the network's MK television site, which carries a dedicated page for MK Six, and through the online channel directories that catalogue Indian television for streaming-era audiences. Those listings present MK Six consistently — a Tamil comedy channel of the Madurai Krishna network, sister to MK TV and MK Tunes — and keep the channel discoverable to viewers who now find regional channels through apps and web guides as much as through the electronic programme guides of cable and DTH platforms.
