About Modern Manufacturing India

Modern Manufacturing India

Modern Manufacturing India, widely known by its initials MMI, is a manufacturing magazine published in Bengaluru by the Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association (IMTMA), the apex body of India's machine tool industry. The magazine is an initiative of IMTMA and is published in association with Modern Machine Shop, the well-known American manufacturing publication. Issued in combined monthly editions such as January–February and September–October, it serves engineers, plant managers, machine tool builders and manufacturing executives with a mix of association analysis, technology features, industry case stories and previews of the exhibitions and training programmes that structure the Indian machine tool calendar. Its home is the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre campus, where IMTMA itself is headquartered.

The Association That Publishes It

IMTMA's history gives the magazine unusual institutional weight. The association was formed on 20 September 1946, when around 19 to 20 machine tool manufacturers came together; its first executive committee met on 28 August 1947 at the Indian Merchant's Chamber in Bombay, chaired by Sir Dhunjishaw B. Cooper, and its first annual general meeting followed on 29 January 1948, electing M. B. Jambhekar as president. The association began at the Godrej campus in Vikhroli, Mumbai, later operated from its own premises and from New Delhi, and opened its Bengaluru office in 1993 before making the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), which it built, its head office. IMTMA was reconstituted as an association registered under the Indian Companies Act in Bombay on 26 March 1973. Today it counts close to 500 member companies and is recognised as the sole voice of the Indian machine tool industry, representing about 90 percent of organised machine tool and allied equipment manufacturers.

Why a Machine Tool Magazine Matters

Machine tools are often called mother machines because they make the machines that make everything else. IMTMA itself describes the machine tool industry as the backbone for industrial growth in India, and MMI's editorial premise follows from that claim: developments in machining, forming, automation and metrology eventually surface in automobiles, aerospace components, defence equipment, railways, medical devices and consumer goods. The magazine therefore writes for two audiences at once — the builders of machine tools and the much larger community of user industries that buy and operate them. Its stated aim, in the association's words, is to serve as a window to the manufacturing world with a refreshingly new perspective, supporting members to increase competitiveness, enhance efficiency, improve productivity and become more cost-effective and technology-driven.

How an Issue Is Built

A typical MMI edition is organised around a lead theme, supported by an opinion piece from IMTMA, inspirational stories from industry, and research-based reporting on current developments. Each issue opens with a Publisher's Note, frequently signed in recent years by V. Anbu, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of IMTMA, which sets the theme in its economic context and invites reader feedback. Past focal themes visible across editions include factory automation, metal cutting, metal forming, and mobility and automotive manufacturing. The metal forming edition prepared ahead of IMTEX Forming 2026, for example, carried an IMTMA article on the exhibition and on the forming segment's market position, noting that metal forming accounts for nearly 30 percent of the Indian machine tool market, with consumption and production figures for the financial year 2025 and a year-on-year rise in machine tool exports. That blend of market data, association analysis and technology coverage is the magazine's signature.

Coverage of Policy and the Economy

Because IMTMA is an advocacy body as well as a publisher, MMI regularly interprets government policy for manufacturers. One early edition under the IMTMA banner discussed the Union Budget's measures for micro, small and medium enterprises — a reduction in income tax for MSMEs, carry-forward of minimum alternate tax credit, a three-year tax exemption for start-ups and expanded lending under the MUDRA scheme — and assessed how the then-new Goods and Services Tax would unify India into a single market and strengthen manufacturing. Later notes addressed the aspiration of a five-trillion-dollar economy with a one-trillion-dollar manufacturing contribution, headwinds facing the automobile industry as a major machine tool consumer, and the case for machine tool builders to explore defence and aerospace demand. During and after the Covid-19 period, publisher's notes tracked the industry's management of health and livelihood challenges, capital utilisation, workforce upskilling and digital platforms as businesses worked back toward pre-pandemic pace.

IMTEX, BIEC and the Exhibition Calendar

No account of MMI is complete without the exhibitions it covers and promotes. IMTMA first hosted its flagship IMTEX exhibition in 1969; it has grown into the largest machine tool exhibition in South and South East Asia and is now staged at BIEC in Bengaluru. Alongside IMTEX sit IMTEX Forming, Tooltech and Digital Manufacturing editions, regional machine tool expos in cities such as Delhi, Pune and Chennai, the Delhi Machine Tool Expo at Pragati Maidan, and events such as the National Productivity Summit in Pune. IMTEX 2025 drew trade delegations and international buyers and included the i2 Academia Square linking institutions and industry, a manufacturing technology quiz for students, the JAGRUTI initiative to make students industry-ready, an International Seminar on Machining Technologies and an Auto Components Industry Transformation Summit. The magazine previews these shows, reports their outcomes and carries the technical discussion between editions, functioning as the year-round companion to events that happen once in a cycle.

Training, Skills and Technology Centres

Skills coverage is a recurring strand. IMTMA runs technology centres in Bengaluru, Gurugram and Pune offering long-term and short-term training designed to bridge the gap between academic preparation and industry requirements and to upskill working professionals. It has also been associated with facilities such as the Advanced Machine Tool Testing Facility and the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Development Centre, and worked with government on a first-of-its-kind machine tool park in Karnataka. MMI reports on these programmes and on seminars, workshops, summits and technology missions to international trade fairs, giving smaller manufacturers — who may never attend a foreign exhibition — access to the lessons their association brings back.

An International Association Link

The magazine's publication in association with Modern Machine Shop connects Indian readers to a global conversation about machining practice. That link mirrors IMTMA's own outward activity: Indian participation at fairs such as EMO Hannover, where the association's publisher's note for a recent edition described purposeful interactions, knowledge exchange and growing global confidence in Indian engineered goods, and observed that Indian-made technologies are shaping the global narrative of advanced manufacturing rather than playing a secondary role. For a magazine whose readers export machines and components, that international framing is practical, not decorative: it benchmarks Indian capability against world practice.

Readership and Use

MMI's readers are the owners and senior staff of machine tool companies, production and purchase managers in user industries, design and process engineers, and the suppliers of cutting tools, accessories, controls and subsystems who sell to both. They read it for market direction — order and sales sentiment, segment data and policy interpretation — and for shop-floor value in its technology features and company stories. IMTMA makes previous issues downloadable from its website, extending the magazine's life as a reference archive. In print and digital form through mmindia.co.in, it reaches an audience that is specialised but economically pivotal, since its readers decide much of India's investment in manufacturing capacity.

Place in Indian Manufacturing Media

India has a number of commercial engineering and manufacturing magazines, but MMI's position is distinctive because its publisher is the industry itself. Its market figures come from the association that compiles the sector's picture; its exhibition coverage concerns shows its own publisher organises; and its opinion pages carry the association's leadership speaking on the record. That gives the magazine an authority closer to an official journal, while its case stories and thematic features keep it readable as a trade magazine rather than a bulletin.

Modern Manufacturing India Today

MMI continues to be published by IMTMA from Bengaluru, with editions themed around the technologies — automation, forming, cutting, digital manufacturing — that are reshaping Indian factories. As IMTMA approaches eight decades since its 1946 formation and promotes events such as IMTEX Forming 2026, the magazine remains the association's storytelling arm: part market report, part technology primer, part invitation to the exhibitions and training through which India's machine tool industry renews itself. For researchers, suppliers and manufacturers alike, it is a concise guide to how India's manufacturing backbone understands its own progress.
