About Money Management
Money Management
Overview
Money Management is one of Australia's longest-established financial services trade publications, founded in Sydney in 1987 and published today as a digital news service at moneymanagement.com.au. It serves the professional wealth industry: financial planners, dealer group principals, fund managers, platform and superannuation executives, accountants, bankers, insurers and policy makers. Its advertising material describes it as "Australia's leading publication for financial planners and dealer group principals", the title's own positioning. For most of its life it was a print tabloid newspaper; the print edition ended in 2022 and the brand now operates online, supported by a podcast and a substantial events business that includes the Fund Manager of the Year Awards, first presented in the title's founding era and staged for the 38th time in June 2026. Since October 2025 the title has been owned by Melbourne-based B2B publisher Prime Creative Media, and its editor is Laura Dew, who also edits sister titles InvestorDaily and Super Review within the same portfolio.
History
Money Management was born, in its later owner's phrase, "out of the 1987 market crash", and was originally part of the Fairfax stable of publications, produced by Australian Financial Press. A retrospective published on its own site recalls that it was itself a technology milestone: the first Fairfax publication produced using desktop publishing, assembled on two Macintosh SE computers. It set out to serve the financial planning industry then taking shape, and moved quickly into industry recognition, creating the Fund Manager of the Year Awards at the outset and, according to a former publisher's account on the site, introducing a Financial Planner of the Year Award in 1989.
Bruce Madden took on the editorship in early 1995, when David Koch was publisher, and edited the title for five years; a New Zealand edition was launched in that period. During Madden's tenure the title was sold to Reed Business Information (Reed Publishing), the global business information group. Under Reed, and later under Cirrus Media, the Australian B2B publishing business Reed's titles passed to and which was owned by Catalyst Private Equity, Money Management continued as a weekly print newspaper and website. Mike Taylor was its managing editor in the 2010s, writing in the print edition that marked the title's 30th year in 2017. That year Cirrus Media sold Money Management and its sister publication Super Review to the UK's Financial Express, which became FE fundinfo; Mumbrella reported at the time that all direct staff transferred and there were no redundancies. FE integrated its fund data into the title, powering an online Investment Centre.
In September 2022 FE fundinfo sold Money Management and Super Review to Momentum Media, which folded them into a financial services portfolio alongside ifa, InvestorDaily and SMSF Adviser. The change of ownership coincided with the end of the print newspaper: Madden marked the moment with a piece titled "the end of an era", celebrating "the passing of the print edition of the newspaper" while noting the digital masthead was still going strong. In October 2025 Momentum Media sold its B2B wealth management titles and events to Prime Creative Media. The transaction, reported by Mumbrella, covered seven publications — Money Management, Investor Daily, IFA, SMSF Adviser, Fintech Business, Adviser Innovation and Super Review — together with their awards, conferences and events franchises, and sixteen staff across sales, events and editorial moved to the new owner.
Programming and Content
Money Management publishes daily news and analysis across financial advice, funds management, superannuation, platforms, insurance and regulation. Its coverage follows the policy debates that shape advisers' businesses: recent years' reporting has covered the Compensation Scheme of Last Resort and the Senate inquiry into the collapse of Dixon Advisory, adviser education and licensing reform, and the findings of research houses. The site carries promoted and premium content alongside its journalism, and maintains special reports for which it has long been known, including the Top 100 Dealer Groups survey and Rate the Raters, both cited in its current advertising material.
The title's Investment Centre, introduced under FE ownership and retained under a preferred-supplier arrangement when Momentum bought the title, gives readers access to fund data and performance information. Its podcast, Relative Return, is hosted by editor Laura Dew in conversation with fund managers and investment specialists about portfolio construction and market conditions. Events are a major strand: the Fund Manager of the Year Awards, run with research partner Lonsec, the Australian Wealth Management Summit, held at the Shangri-La Sydney in August 2026, and the associated Australian Wealth Management Awards.
Audience and Reach
The readership is professional rather than consumer: advisers, licensee executives, fund managers and the service providers around them. No current audited audience figure for the title is published, and none is asserted here. The most specific historical figure comes from FE's acquisition announcement in 2017, in which FE said the site "is used by over 200,000 members of the financial services community every month" and provided data on more than 10,000 Australian funds; that is FE's claim from that time, presented as such. The title's longevity, the seniority of the industry figures who enter and attend its awards, and its retention through four changes of ownership are the practical evidence of its standing.
Digital Presence
Money Management today is a digital-first brand. Its website is updated daily with news, features, opinion and data tools, and it distributes the Relative Return podcast through podcast platforms. The Fund Manager of the Year Awards operate through a dedicated event site, and the title's archive reaches back across its print history, including retrospectives by former editors and publishers. The 38th annual Fund Manager of the Year Awards were held on 26 June 2026 at the Hyatt Regency Sydney, with Firetrail Investments named Fund Manager of the Year and Lonsec again the research partner; the winners' coverage on the site carries imagery supplied by Prime Creative Media, and Lonsec's award disclosures record that the awards program is owned by Prime Creative Media. The title describes Laura Dew as its editor in its June and July 2026 coverage, quoting her on both the Fund Manager of the Year finalists and the 2026 Australian Wealth Management Awards.
Ownership and Organisation
The ownership line runs: Fairfax (Australian Financial Press), founder-owner from 1987; Reed Business Information, which acquired the title during Bruce Madden's editorship in the mid-1990s; Cirrus Media, the Catalyst Private Equity-owned business that inherited Reed's Australian titles; FE (Financial Express, later FE fundinfo), which bought Money Management and Super Review in 2017; Momentum Media, which bought them from FE fundinfo in September 2022; and Prime Creative Media, which acquired them in October 2025 as part of the seven-title wealth portfolio sale. Prime Creative Media is a Melbourne-headquartered B2B publisher whose chairman is John Murphy and whose chief executive, per the sale coverage, is Christine Clancy; it publishes trade titles across agriculture, automotive, education, health, infrastructure, manufacturing, transport and other sectors, with the wealth portfolio added in 2025. The title's frontmatter in this directory follows the inventory in listing it in Sydney, where its editorial operation and awards activity are centred, while its owning company is based in Melbourne; that distinction is stated openly. Editorial leadership sits with Laura Dew, editor of Money Management, Investor Daily and Super Review, a role she held under Momentum from its 2023 financial services team restructure and continues to hold under Prime Creative Media, as her June 2026 statements in the titles' own coverage attest.
Contact and Availability
Money Management is available online at moneymanagement.com.au, where its Advertise page sets out commercial contact options and its coverage can be read daily. The Fund Manager of the Year Awards take entries and ticket bookings through the program's own site. No public business email address for the title is published on the pages reviewed, and none is printed here; no street address for the title itself is published, the Sydney listing in this profile reflecting its editorial base rather than its owner's Melbourne headquarters.
