The Moosomin World-Spectator is a weekly community newspaper published in Moosomin, Saskatchewan, Canada, a town of 2,657 people at the 2021 census in the province's southeast corner, close to the Manitoba border. Founded in 1884 — twenty-one years before Saskatchewan became a province — it is one of the oldest continuously operating community newspapers on the Canadian prairies, and in October 2024 it marked its 140th anniversary. The paper is owned and published by Kevin Weedmark, and since September 2024 its editor has been Kara Kinna. It serves a two-province readership of towns and farm communities across southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba from its office at 714 Main Street in Moosomin.
The June 2025 Saskatchewan Media Directory lists the paper under its full Moosomin World Spectator name with its Main Street address, telephone (306) 435-2445, email world_spectator@sasktel.net and website, www.world-spectator.com. The paper continues to publish original local journalism in 2026: its website carried current stories through September and October 2026, written by its editor and by Local Journalism Initiative reporters, and its reporting was still being cited by provincial media monitors at the start of 2026.
The World-Spectator began on 2 October 1884 as the Courier, a frontier weekly in what was then the District of Assiniboia in the North-West Territories. According to the history the paper itself published for its 140th anniversary in October 2024 — an article carried in volume 140, number 1 of the paper, so that its volume numbering runs unbroken from its founding year — the Courier was bought by a man remembered as "Spectator Smith," who renamed it The Spectator. A rival paper, The World, was later established in Moosomin, and for years the town supported two competing weeklies, one aligned with the Conservatives and one with the Liberals. In 1910 the two papers merged to form the World-Spectator, and the merged paper's logo is printed in blue and red to this day in memory of the Conservative and Liberal papers that came together to create it. The paper's early history, as recorded in its own published accounts, also included brief daily publication during the North-West Rebellion of 1885.
The paper's published history records John Meen as a long-serving twentieth-century figure: Meen became editor in 1966, purchased the paper in 1972 and sold it on 1 January 1991 to Bruce Penton. The present owner, Kevin Weedmark, later bought the paper — the year of his purchase is not stated in the sources consulted and is not asserted here — and he has described his philosophy in the paper's anniversary coverage: "As soon as I bought it, I decided we would operate as community service first and a business second. We never limit the space for community news; we will add pages to make sure the stories are told." Weedmark, who reported from Afghanistan in 2004 on a project undertaken with the paper, has won two CIDA Awards for Excellence in Writing on International Co-operation and two B'nai B'rith Media Human Rights Awards. In the paper's 140th anniversary article he described the World-Spectator as the community's memory: "We're not only the local newspaper, we are the local archive." News Media Canada marked the anniversary in October 2024, noting that the paper had turned 140 a full twenty-one years before Saskatchewan itself became a province in 1905.
The World-Spectator is a general-interest community weekly whose pages are given over to the news of Moosomin and the surrounding towns and rural municipalities: town and rural council business, schools, churches, service clubs, local business, sports and the agricultural economy of the southeast. Its anniversary coverage emphasised an editorial policy of unlimited space for community news, with pages added when the week's events require them. Agriculture is served both within the paper and through Ag News, an associated agricultural publication owned by Weedmark, which won First Place for Best Agricultural Edition at the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards in 2024; the World-Spectator itself took Third Place for Excellence in Rural Reporting in the same awards.
The paper's ambitions have at times reached well beyond its district. Its owner reported from Afghanistan in 2004 on a development project carried out with the paper, work recognised by the CIDA writing awards and B'nai B'rith human rights awards noted above. In 2026 the paper's website has carried a steady flow of original stories credited to editor Kara Kinna and to Local Journalism Initiative reporters Nicole Taylor and Ashley Bochek — the Local Journalism Initiative being the federal programme that funds reporters in underserved communities — and its coverage of town and district affairs was being picked up in wire monitoring in mid-October 2026.
The World-Spectator's reported service area, as listed in reference profiles of the paper, covers Moosomin, Rocanville, Esterhazy, Redvers, Wapella, Wawota, Langbank, Welwyn, Spy Hill, Tantallon, Fleming, Fairlight and Maryfield in Saskatchewan, and St. Lazare, McAuley, Manson, Elkhorn and Kola across the provincial boundary in Manitoba — a cross-border readership unusual among prairie weeklies, reflecting Moosomin's position as a service centre for both provinces. The Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association's member profile listed the paper's circulation as 4,001, a figure retrieved in April 2023 and presented here as that dated association listing. The paper is distributed by mail under Publications Mail Agreement No. 40011909.
Moosomin is a town of 2,657 people (2021 census) on the Trans-Canada Highway corridor, and the paper's district includes substantially larger centres such as Esterhazy, a potash-mining town, which helps explain a circulation larger than its home town's population. Editions of the paper examined for this profile — front pages from May 2020 and September 2023 and a monitored story dated Monday, 12 October 2026 — have carried Monday dates.
The paper's website, world-spectator.com, publishes its current reporting online, including staff and Local Journalism Initiative stories dated through September and October 2026, and it is the web address given for the paper in both the June 2025 Saskatchewan Media Directory and the provincial legislative library's current newspaper links. The World-Spectator's stories are also distributed beyond its own site: a World-Spectator news item was carried in wire monitoring on 12 October 2026, and the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association's media monitoring was citing the paper's coverage as recently as 5 January 2026. Readers searching for the paper online should use the hyphenated world-spectator.com domain recorded in the media directory.
The World-Spectator is independently owned by its publisher, Kevin Weedmark, who also owns the agricultural publication Ag News and Plain & Valley. In September 2024 Weedmark won the Saskatchewan Party nomination for the Moosomin-Montmartre constituency, and in the provincial election of October 2024 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as the riding's MLA, while continuing as the paper's owner and publisher. Day-to-day editorship passed to Kara Kinna, who became editor on 16 September 2024. Kinna, Weedmark's wife, graduated from the University of Regina's journalism programme in 2002 and joined the World-Spectator in September of that year, giving the paper an editor with more than two decades on its own staff. The newsroom also includes reporters funded through the Local Journalism Initiative, with Nicole Taylor and Ashley Bochek bylines appearing on the paper's website in 2026.
The Moosomin World-Spectator is published weekly from 714 Main Street, Box 250, Moosomin, Saskatchewan S0G 3N0. The office telephone number is (306) 435-2445 and its fax number is (306) 435-3969. News and general enquiries can be sent to the paper's published email address, world_spectator@sasktel.net. Current stories are available on its website at www.world-spectator.com. In the WorldNM directory the paper is listed as a Canadian newspaper based in Moosomin, with world-spectator.com recorded as its website, as inventoried.
