About More4

More4 is the Channel 4-owned free-to-air television channel for grown-up viewers, a service aimed at audiences aged 35 to 60 with a schedule built around lifestyle programming, documentaries, intelligent drama and first-rate foreign-language series. Launched in 2005 as a more mature sibling to the youth-skewing E4, it has evolved from a news-and-drama channel into one of Britain's most distinctive homes for premium documentary and lifestyle television.

History and Launch

The idea of a sister channel aimed at an older demographic than the youth-orientated E4 was first planned by Channel 4 in 2003, growing out of an earlier concept known internally as G4. Channel 4 had originally been considering a free-to-air youth channel before settling on the More4 concept, at a time when E4 was still a subscription service. More4 was launched on 10 October 2005 under the leadership of its first head, Peter Dale, with a programme budget of £33 million — more than £20 million of it earmarked for original, UK-produced programming.

The launch night set the tone: alongside repeats of Channel 4 staples such as Grand Designs, Countdown and Deal or No Deal, the channel premiered the satirical docudrama A Very Social Secretary, about the affair between former Home Secretary David Blunkett and Kimberly Quinn. American drama was central to the early schedule, with first-run episodes of ER, The West Wing and The Sopranos moving across from E4, alongside the American satire programme The Daily Show and a late-evening chat show, The Last Word. A Freeview placeholder appeared at EPG number 13 on 13 September 2005, running a looping teaser trailer ahead of launch. In 2008 the channel became free-to-air on Freesat, and on 23 January 2012 it was relaunched with a shift towards a more lifestyle-based schedule, with documentaries that had previously aired on the channel moving to Channel 4.

Ownership

More4 is owned by Channel Four Television Corporation, the publicly owned, commercially funded broadcaster behind Channel 4, E4, Film4, 4seven and E4 Extra. Like its parent, More4 is funded by advertising rather than the licence fee. The channel forms part of Channel 4's portfolio of digital services, which are marketed together and share programming across broadcast and the Channel 4 streaming platform (formerly All 4). Timeshift variants More4 +1 have operated on various platforms since the channel's early years.

Programming and Flagship Shows

Today More4's programming focuses on lifestyle and documentaries, as well as acclaimed foreign dramas. The channel is the British home of many of the world's best Scandinavian and European dramas, and its documentary strands include long-running Channel 4 factual brands and first-run documentaries on history, science, property, food and travel. Property and lifestyle series are a particular strength: the channel's schedule is built around the kind of upscale, aspirational programming — grand designs, historic homes, fine food and far-flung travel — that appeals to its 35-to-60 target audience.

In its earlier years the channel carried a wider mix. It showed all five weekday editions of The Daily Show from launch in 2005 until January 2011, when it scaled the commitment back to a single weekly episode to increase investment in arts programming. American imports over the years have included Curb Your Enthusiasm, Without a Trace, The Closer and Morgan Spurlock's reality series 30 Days. The channel also broadcast controversial event programming: the drama Death of a President, about a fictional assassination of President George W. Bush, attracted widespread and often angry newspaper coverage in 2006, while The Trial of Tony Blair, a satirical drama about the then prime minister, aired in January 2007. In April 2006 the channel broadcast a live hypnosurgery hernia operation, a characteristically provocative piece of event television.

News and Current Affairs

News was central to More4's original identity. The launch lineup included More4 News, a nightly extension of Channel 4 News designed to look "beyond the headlines" with in-depth analysis, alongside the nightly discussion programme The Last Word — later Starkey's Last Word, hosted by David Starkey. These programmes gave the channel a serious, analytical voice in its early years. As the channel's focus shifted towards lifestyle from 2012, dedicated news output diminished; Channel 4 News itself remains the corporation's flagship news programme on the main channel, while More4's current affairs output is expressed mainly through its documentary strands, including the long-running Dispatches investigations and Cutting Edge films that appear in its schedule.

Audience and Ratings

More4 made a strong start: by April 2006 Channel 4 reported that the channel already commanded a 0.65 per cent share of the multichannel audience — a very credible performance for a new digital channel. Its audience is deliberately older and more upmarket than E4's, reflecting the 35-to-60 target demographic. The channel's lifestyle and documentary output performs particularly well in daytime and early peak, while its foreign dramas have attracted a loyal, quality-seeking audience that values subtitled series. The channel's HD simulcast, More4 HD, launched on 4 February 2013 on Sky.

Broadcast and Streaming Availability

More4 broadcasts every day from 08:55 to 04:00 and is available free-to-air across the United Kingdom on Freeview (channel 18), Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat. The channel streams live through the Channel 4 streaming service and is available on the Sky Go and Virgin TV Go apps. A one-hour timeshift service, More4 +1, operates on satellite, cable and streaming platforms. Most Channel 4 channels are free-to-air on satellite, receivable on Sky boxes and Freesat receivers without a subscription.

Cultural Impact

More4 played an important role in establishing the British appetite for high-quality foreign-language drama. Long before streaming services made subtitled series mainstream, the channel was introducing UK viewers to acclaimed international series and demonstrating that audiences would embrace them — a contribution that helped pave the way for the later success of services such as Walter Presents on Channel 4's streaming platform. The channel also gave British documentary-makers a home for ambitious, authored films at a time when documentary budgets elsewhere were under pressure. Its early willingness to court controversy — from Death of a President to live surgery on television — embodied the risk-taking spirit of Channel 4 at its most provocative, and its evolution into a lifestyle powerhouse mirrored the broader transformation of British multichannel television in the 2010s.

Sister Channels

More4 is one of Channel 4's family of channels, alongside the flagship Channel 4, the youth entertainment channel E4, the catch-up service 4seven, the film channel Film4, E4 Extra and the music channels The Box, Kerrang!, Kiss and Magic (operated through Channel 4's music interests). Where E4 chases the 16-to-34 audience with US imports and entertainment, and Film4 is devoted to cinema, More4 occupies the mature, quality end of the portfolio — the channel for viewers who want intelligent documentaries, lifestyle programming and the best of world drama.

Recent Developments

In recent years More4 has consolidated its position as Channel 4's lifestyle and documentary destination, with a schedule increasingly built around property, food, travel and premium factual series, complemented by foreign-language drama. The channel adopted a refreshed on-screen identity in 2018 as part of a wider rebrand of Channel 4's services. Its programmes are fully integrated into the Channel 4 streaming platform, where box sets of its documentaries and dramas sit alongside content from across the corporation's portfolio. As Channel 4 has pivoted towards a digital-first future, More4's mix of dependable lifestyle brands and quality acquisitions has made it one of the most stable performers in the company's channel lineup.
