About Mortgage Professional Australia

Mortgage Professional Australia

Overview

Mortgage Professional Australia (MPA) is the Australian trade publication for the mortgage broking industry, published from Sydney by KM Business Information, the business-to-business media company formerly known as Key Media. It serves the professionals who originate and distribute Australian home loans — mortgage brokers, brokerages, aggregators, lenders and the business development managers who connect them — with a daily online news service at mpamag.com/au, a print and digital magazine, a programme of ranked special reports and the Australian Mortgage Awards, the industry's flagship gala. MPA is business-to-business throughout: it writes for the broker channel, not for homebuyers.

MPA is the founding title of the publisher's international Mortgage Professional network. Its sister editions — Mortgage Professional America, Canadian Mortgage Professional, Mortgage Introducer in the United Kingdom and NZ Adviser in New Zealand — each serve their own national markets from the shared mpamag.com platform, and the Australian edition is likewise a distinct national edition rather than a relay of overseas content: its newsroom covers Australian lenders, aggregators, regulators and broker businesses, its rankings are compiled from Australian settlement data, and its awards recognise Australian firms. Where the Canadian edition, profiled separately in this directory, reports on Canada's broker channel from Toronto, MPA covers an Australian market in which brokers now facilitate more than three quarters of all new home loans.

History

MPA was launched in 2001, the year its publisher was founded in Sydney, and the publisher's own account describes it as the leading business magazine for the mortgage and finance industry from that era forward. It began as a print magazine for a broker channel that was then still establishing itself as the main route to a home loan in Australia, and through the 2000s it built the institutions that still define the brand: an annual Top 100 ranking of individual brokers, surveys of broker sentiment toward lenders such as Brokers on Banks, and the Australian Mortgage Awards, presented by MPA together with sister title Australian Broker.

As the publisher grew from a Sydney magazine house into a global business media company — rebranding in time from Key Media to KM Business Information — the Mortgage Professional brand was extended market by market, with editions following in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and network-wide projects such as the Global 100, which selects mortgage leaders across all five markets, layered on top of the national titles. MPA's own centre of gravity shifted with the industry from print to digital: the daily news service and its special reports became the core product, while the magazine continued alongside them — MPA's Top 100 Brokers 2026 report, for example, was slated for publication both online and in MPA magazine in December 2026. Issue numbering in 2021 had reached volume 21 (issues 21.05 and 21.06 carried that year's Top 10 Commercial Brokers and Top Brokerages reports), two decades into the title's run.

Programming and Content

The core of MPA is its daily news service for the intermediated mortgage market. Its reporting follows lender pricing and policy changes, aggregator mergers and recruitment, appointments across the channel, the activities of the industry associations — the Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) and the Finance Brokers Association of Australia (FBAA) — and the regulatory settings that shape brokers' businesses, including the best interests duty and the Reserve Bank's interest-rate cycle. Longer-form analysis appears under its premium banner: an October 2026 feature, for instance, examined how Australia's largest brokerages are trying to grow without losing the client relationships that built them, drawing on the finalists in its own Brokerage of the Year category.

MPA's best-known content is its calendar of benchmark reports, compiled from industry submissions and verified with aggregators. The Top 100 Brokers report is the flagship: the 2025 edition recorded its hundred brokers collectively settling $21.3 billion in residential loans in the year to June 2025, averaging 294 loans each, with $143 million in settlements required to make the list. The Top Brokerages report applies the same approach to firms — the 2026 edition ranked 50 brokerages that collectively settled $41.2 billion in the 2025 calendar year, up 38.6 per cent on the prior year, with a median settlement volume of $644.8 million needed to qualify. Around them sit the Top 10 Commercial Brokers ranking, the Brokers on Banks survey and the network's Global 100.

Events complete the model. The Australian Mortgage Awards, presented by MPA and Australian Broker, are the industry's biggest night: the 2026 edition was held on 16 October 2026 at The Fullerton Hotel Sydney, where some 850 mortgage professionals saw winners named across 28 categories before a 35-member judging panel drawn from lenders, aggregators, brokers, industry bodies and academics, with Westpac as event partner. Katie Thomas of Focus Finance was named Westpac Australian Broker of the Year for the second year running, Gippsland Finance Solutions took Liberty Australian Brokerage of the Year, and category honours ran from Broker Young Gun of the Year to Aggregator of the Year, won by AFG.

Audience and Reach

MPA's audience is the Australian mortgage profession: individual brokers and the owners of brokerages, aggregator and lender executives, and the business development managers and service providers around them. It is a small, defined professional readership with an outsized role in the housing market. According to the MFAA's quarterly market share data, collected by Cotality from aggregators and broker groups, mortgage brokers facilitated a record 77.6 per cent of all new residential lending in the June 2025 quarter, and 77.3 per cent — $130.23 billion of new home loans — in the September 2025 quarter. MPA's reports quantify the top of that channel: the $21.3 billion settled by its Top 100 brokers in a single year, and the $41.2 billion settled by its Top 50 brokerages in 2025, are figures published by MPA from aggregator-verified submissions.

The publisher does not publish an independently audited circulation or traffic figure for the Australian edition, and none is claimed here. The observable measures of reach are the cadence of the daily news service, the standing of its rankings as the industry's reference points — entries for Top 100 Brokers 2026 were called nationally, sponsored by CommBank — and the pull of its events, which drew some 850 industry professionals to the 2026 Australian Mortgage Awards.

Digital Presence

Mortgage Professional Australia is a digital-first publication. Its home is the Australian section of the publisher's global mortgage platform, mpamag.com/au, where the daily news flow, premium features, special reports and award pages sit alongside the sister editions for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. News is published daily through 2025 and 2026, and the edition's reports are released as searchable online features, with the magazine continuing in print and digital form for flagship reports. MPA distributes its journalism through a free email newsletter for subscribers and promotes its reports, awards shortlists and winners across social channels, making the website and the awards program — rather than the print magazine alone — the centre of the brand's presence.

Ownership and Organisation

Mortgage Professional Australia is owned and published by KM Business Information, formerly Key Media. The company describes itself as a global business-to-business media company founded in Sydney in 2001, with offices in Sydney, Auckland, Denver, London, Manila and Toronto and a portfolio of 28 publications across seven verticals — insurance, mortgage, human resources, legal, wealth management, education and occupational safety — in six countries. The mortgage vertical is one of its founding businesses: alongside MPA, the Australian operation publishes the broker-facing sister title Australian Broker, with which the Australian Mortgage Awards are jointly presented, and its journalists operate under the publisher's stated commitment that advertising relationships have no bearing on editorial coverage. Across the wider group, editorial direction is set by the company's VP Editorial. MPA itself is produced from the company's Sydney headquarters, in the market where the Mortgage Professional network began.

Contact and Availability

Mortgage Professional Australia is available free online at mpamag.com/au, with a free subscription to its email newsletter offered on the site. Entries for its special reports, including Top 100 Brokers and Top Brokerages, and nominations for the Australian Mortgage Awards are called through the website each year, and its events are ticketed through the same platform. Its publisher, KM Business Information, is based at Level 32, 200 George Street, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia.
