About MRI-Simmons

MRI-Simmons

MRI-Simmons is a syndicated consumer research service based in New York, in the United States, formed by the merger of MRI and Simmons Research. Its consumer surveys supply audience and product-use data to advertisers, agencies and media companies. For more than sixty years, in the company's own summary of its combined history, its predecessor studies have measured the American consumer — what people buy, what brands they prefer, what media they read, watch and listen to, and what attitudes lie behind those choices — and published the results as a syndicated data set that hundreds of organizations use to plan advertising and media. MRI-Simmons describes itself as a leading provider of insights on the American consumer, and its core study is one of the few single-source, privacy-compliant consumer data sets in wide professional use.

Formation as a joint venture in 2019

MRI-Simmons was launched as a joint venture in 2019, when GfK's MRI division and SymphonyAI's Simmons Research agreed to merge their operations. The joint venture is co-owned by GfK and SymphonyAI Group, with GfK as the majority partner. Trade coverage of the February 2019 announcement explained what each side brought: MRI contributed its national study and reporting services, accredited by the Media Rating Council, while Simmons Research contributed its National Consumer Survey. The combination was intended to bring together the two syndicated media research and consumer intelligence product lines, allow new services including applications and APIs to be developed more quickly, and give clients a single partner for media research and insights. Anna Welch, managing director of MRI, was named to lead the joint venture, and GfK executive vice-president Mike Drankwalter was named to lead sales. In 2023, GfK combined with NIQ, bringing the joint venture's majority owner together with another of the world's largest consumer intelligence companies.

The two predecessor studies

Each predecessor was a landmark survey in its own right. MRI — Mediamark Research — built its reputation on the Study of the American Consumer, a nationally representative survey used for media planning and consumer profiling. Simmons built its reputation on the National Consumer Study, also known as the National Consumer Survey, a survey of adults eighteen and older across the United States. University library guides, written for students learning to use the combined database, explain that the Catalyst database provides data from the study on consumer use of media, products and brands, together with demographic and psychographic information — attitudes and values — and that the Simmons study has surveyed approximately twenty-five thousand United States adults in its documented form. Syracuse University's library, spotlighting the service, notes that MRI-Simmons has presented itself since 1962 as a voice of the American consumer through nationally representative surveys. The joint venture's claim to more than sixty years in consumer insights rests on those predecessor lineages.

Single-source data

The defining technical idea behind MRI-Simmons is single-source measurement: the same randomly selected respondents report their demographics, their product and brand use, their media habits and their attitudes, so a client can connect those facts about the same people rather than joining separate surveys together. The company says its data are powered by address-based probabilistic sampling — measuring real people, chosen at random, to represent the United States population in all its variations — producing a nationally representative and culturally diverse data set. Its core study, MRI-Simmons USA, uses probabilistic sampling and single-source collection from fifty thousand respondents each year, and is described by the company as the industry's leading source of consumer intelligence for brands, agencies and media partners. Transparency and methodological rigor are the qualities the company puts at its foundation, a necessary claim for a service whose numbers decide how advertising money is allocated.

Catalyst

Access to the data is delivered principally through Catalyst, which MRI-Simmons calls its consumer insights and activation engine. Built on the nationally representative consumer truth set from the core study, Catalyst provides marketers with a series of modules running from consumer profiling through digital and addressable activation, designed as a self-service experience with complete transparency. Library guides show how the tool is used in practice: a researcher selects a product, brand, service, opinion, behavior or media variable, chooses the answers of interest, and cross-tabulates them against audience characteristics to answer questions such as what types of people hold a given attitude, or what share of a demographic group bought a category of furniture in the last year, or what proportion of a newspaper's at-home readers are men. A related visualization function, Brand Catalyst, presents consumer behavior and brand preference data in graphical form for advertising, marketing and media planning users.

Consumer Canvas and data enrichment

In October 2024, at Advertising Week New York, MRI-Simmons launched Consumer Canvas, a data enrichment solution built on the MRI-Simmons USA study and developed in partnership with leading identity providers. To build it, the company deterministically matched respondents from its core study to national consumer files; based on that match, more than sixty thousand attributes from MRI-Simmons were scored onto approximately two hundred and fifty million United States adults, creating an identity spine weighted and balanced so that parts of the population often under-represented in big data are accounted for. Marketers use the resulting data set to enrich their own first-party data, discover audiences and activate custom audiences across media. The launch illustrates the direction of the whole business: a survey that began as published tables for media planners now also operates as infrastructure for digital and addressable advertising, where audiences must be found and reached in systems far removed from a printed report.

Partnerships and data quality work

MRI-Simmons extends its survey through partnerships that connect it to the wider advertising data ecosystem. In 2024 it announced a collaboration with TransUnion to enable addressability throughout the advertising ecosystem, describing at the time how its truth set and Catalyst engine inform marketing strategy from profiling through activation. It also joined the Truthset Data Collective, a grouping concerned with validating the quality of consumer data used for digital and addressable activation, saying the step reaffirmed its commitment to data quality at a moment when marketers are tasked with improving media efficiency and return on advertising investment. Executives discussing the company's direction have stressed interoperability — making the MRI-Simmons asset work alongside the many other data sets clients use, from planning and strategy through execution, activation and measurement — as data now arrives at a velocity it never did before.

Who uses MRI-Simmons

The service's users are the professional audience for consumer research: advertisers deciding which audiences to pursue, advertising agencies planning and buying media, media companies — newspapers, magazines, broadcasters and digital publishers — demonstrating the value of their audiences, and brands profiling the consumers of their own and competitors' products. The data support consumer profiling, media planning, data enrichment and activation, in the company's summary. Universities are also significant users through library licences, because the study is a standard teaching source for how syndicated consumer research works; library research guides at multiple universities walk students through the Catalyst interface step by step. That academic presence reinforces the service's standing as a reference source on the American consumer, not merely a commercial planning tool.

New York base and standing

MRI-Simmons is recorded in this directory as a New York-based service, reflecting the historic home of both predecessor research businesses in the center of the American advertising industry, which has always been concentrated in New York. Its standing rests on a combination few rivals can match: two of the oldest continuously running syndicated consumer surveys in the United States, brought together in a single joint venture in 2019; Media Rating Council accreditation inherited from MRI's national study; a fifty-thousand-respondent annual core study; and delivery systems, from Catalyst to Consumer Canvas, that carry the same underlying truth set into modern digital activation. For advertisers, agencies and media companies, MRI-Simmons remains a standard answer to the basic question of American marketing — who buys what, and what do those people watch, read and believe.
