About MTA TV

MTA TV

MTA TV is the satellite television channel of Yayasan Majlis Tafsir Al-Qur'an, the Majlis Tafsir Al-Qur'an Foundation, known universally in Indonesia by its initials MTA. Based in Surakarta — the city also known as Solo — in Central Java, the channel was launched on 1 October 2014 to carry the foundation's Qur'an-centred dakwah to a national audience by satellite and streaming. Its flagship is Jihad Pagi, the Sunday-morning study gathering broadcast live from the MTA headquarters, a programme that existed on MTA radio long before television and around which the whole MTA media family — magazine, radio, television and internet — is organised. MTA TV broadcasts in Indonesian, mixing intensive religious study with news, agriculture, business, tourism and children's programming in which Islamic values are deliberately woven through general formats.

The Foundation Behind the Channel

To understand MTA TV it is necessary to understand MTA itself. The Majlis Tafsir Al-Qur'an was founded in Surakarta on 19 September 1972 by Abdullah Thufail Saputra, who established it out of the conviction that Indonesian Muslims had fallen behind because of a limited understanding of the Qur'an. The foundation defines itself as an Islamic educational and dakwah institution whose purpose is to organise activities in the social and religious fields: formal and non-formal education, religious study gatherings — pengajian — and the establishment of related educational institutions, all directed at encouraging Muslims to return to the Qur'an and the Sunnah in a consistent way.

MTA is consistently grouped by scholars among Indonesia's puritan or reformist Islamic movements, alongside organisations such as Muhammadiyah and Persis, known for promoting literacy in the Qur'an and Sunnah and for rejecting local religious practices it considers without foundation in those sources, such as tahlilan memorial gatherings and grave visitation rituals. After its founder's era, leadership passed to Ahmad Sukino — also written Ahmad Sukina — who became the public voice of MTA through the Jihad Pagi sessions he leads. The foundation grew from Surakarta into a branch network across Indonesia, with branches still being formally inaugurated in regencies such as Blora in recent years, giving its media a ready-made national community of members and sympathisers.

MTA Media Before Television

Television was the last layer of an MTA media system built over four decades. In publishing, MTA has produced a monthly magazine published since 1974, known as Respon or Response, which had obtained its publishing licence by 1977, together with a range of religious books. Its most influential print product, however, is humbler: the brochures prepared for the Sunday-morning study, designed by a team under supervision and distributed to members, which become the main reference for study in branches and are discussed at the Sunday gathering at headquarters. Those same brochure materials circulate through MTA's radio and television and are uploaded freely to YouTube, binding the media together around a single weekly text.

On radio, MTA FM broadcast on 107.9 FM from Surakarta from 2007, based on Jalan Cilosari in the city, carrying the Jihad Pagi programme that made MTA's name in broadcasting. Dakwah radio research on Surakarta describes Jihad Pagi as MTA's best-known programme well before television: a live Sunday-morning session in which Ahmad Sukino answers questions from members and sympathisers, some submitted indirectly through the published brochures and some asked directly by those present, functioning in practice as religious guidance — tausiyah — for the community. A companion segment, Silaturrahmi, interviewed newcomers about how they had encountered MTA and how its radio had changed their religious understanding, turning audience testimony into part of the broadcast. MTA TV inherited this entire format and audience when it arrived.

Launch of MTA TV in 2014

MTA TV was launched on 1 October 2014 as the foundation's satellite television service, headquartered with the foundation in Surakarta. Its studios and its flagship broadcasts are centred on the MTA headquarters on Jalan Ronggowarsito number 111 A in Surakarta, the address from which Jihad Pagi is broadcast live every Sunday from 06.30 Western Indonesian Time. In its formative period the channel also worked through the practical stages of becoming a local television presence for the Solo area: an early academic study of news production at MTA TV describes it as a station in its pioneering phase toward local television for the Solo region, testing programmes on air while others were produced through rehearsal stages before broadcast.

Distribution was satellite-first, appropriate for a foundation whose members were spread across the archipelago. Satellite listings of the period carried MTA TV on the Palapa satellite at 3896 horizontal with symbol rate 3000, alongside the MTA radio service. From satellite, the channel extended into streaming: broadcasts were carried by live streaming on YouTube and through UseeTV, with programmes also published through the channel's Facebook account and its Instagram presence under the mtatv_official name, and a web presence at mtatv.net. The satellite-plus-streaming combination meant a branch member anywhere in Indonesia could follow the Surakarta headquarters' teaching live on Sunday morning and catch up with study series during the week.

Jihad Pagi: The Flagship Programme

Every account of MTA TV returns to Jihad Pagi. The Sunday-morning pengajian — its name combining jihad in its sense of striving with pagi, morning, and also known simply as Pengajian Ahad Pagi, the Sunday Morning Study — is described in dakwah-management research as the leading programme across all MTA mass media, delivered both on air and off air, and transmitted widely by satellite, internet live streaming, MTA FM radio and Persada 102.2 FM. Its format is study, not spectacle: the week's brochure text is expounded, and questions from the gathered congregation and the wider membership are answered by the foundation's leadership.

The programme's durability comes from its integration with MTA's organisational life. The brochures are prepared in advance, studied in branches, discussed on air, archived on YouTube and used as the membership's reference until the next cycle. Jihad Pagi is thus simultaneously a television programme, a radio programme, a print curriculum and a weekly act of organisational cohesion — which is why, when MTA built a television channel, this was the programme the channel was principally built to carry.

Religious Programming Beyond the Flagship

Around Jihad Pagi, MTA TV built a full slate of dedicated dakwah formats, catalogued in research on the channel's dakwah strategy. They include Kajian Tafsir dan Hadits, study of Qur'anic exegesis and hadith; Tahsin, the disciplined improvement of Qur'an recitation; Tausyiah Pagi, morning religious counsel; Lembar Ilmu, pages of knowledge; Fajar Hidayah, the dawn of guidance; Tabligh, larger-scale religious address; Kajian Jelas; and Meniti Jalan Dakwah, walking the path of dakwah. The editorial policy behind them, as documented by researchers, is to broadcast Islamic material covering the three great domains of aqidah or creed, syariah or religious law and akhlak or character, drawn from the Qur'an and Hadith according to the results of MTA's own study.

That last qualification matters. MTA TV does not present a generic Indonesian Islam; it presents MTA's studied positions, prepared through the foundation's own scholarly process, in which the Qur'an holds primacy and authentic hadith is applied in subordination to it. The channel is therefore best understood as the teaching voice of one specific, disciplined religious organisation, extended to any viewer who wishes to learn in its way.

General Programming with Dakwah Values

The second half of MTA TV's strategy, again documented by its researchers, is to insert dakwah messages into general programming — talk and entertainment formats whose substance is designed to benefit viewers. Recorded examples include Plesiran and Saatnya Wisata Boga for travel and culinary tourism, Mitra Tani serving farming audiences, Si Sopan or Sobat Pandai for children, Gareng Mudheng drawing on Javanese comic tradition, and Kilau Ananda for young viewers. Useful knowledge beyond religion — economics, business and agriculture are named in the channel's own editorial description — sits inside the schedule as a deliberate part of the mission, not as filler.

News also has a place. MTA TV's newsroom planning distinguished live news from live-on-tape news, and hard news from soft news: the hard-news strand was Adi News, still in recorded and rehearsal production during the pioneering study, and the soft-news strand was the seven-minute programme Tujuh Menit. A later news format, Info Flash Pilihan — selected info flashes — is recorded presenting selected and up-to-date news and information on weekday and Saturday afternoons and evenings. For a foundation channel, maintaining news production at all signals an ambition to be a complete television service for its community rather than a single-subject study channel.

Audience, Reach and Dakwah Strategy

Research on MTA TV's dakwah management describes a two-part strategy: editorial development, deepening the religious and useful content described above, and expansion of broadcast reach, pushing the signal across satellite and every available streaming platform. The same research notes the channel's emphasis on flexibility and innovation to survive competition — watching what other media do, counter-programming where necessary and adopting formats judged effective for delivering its message. Its audience segmentation is formally general, but in practice its heaviest viewing comes from the MTA community itself: members who want to practise the Qur'an and Sunnah as the foundation teaches, and sympathisers who use the broadcasts to guard and deepen their religious life.

The researchers also record the channel's operating environment honestly: plentiful human resources from the foundation's membership, adequate equipment and a wide organisational network on the strength side; on the challenge side, an increasingly complex viewing public and periodic friction with parts of society that find aspects of MTA's puritan teaching unsettling. That friction is a known feature of MTA's public profile in Central Java, and the channel operates as the foundation's calm, continuous answer to it: the teaching itself, broadcast in full, week after week.

MTA TV Within Indonesian Religious Broadcasting

MTA TV occupies a distinctive niche among Indonesian Islamic channels. Unlike broad Salafi satellite channels organised around many independent teachers, and unlike the Islamic channels of large commercial groups, MTA TV is the single voice of a single Surakarta foundation founded in 1972, with its own curriculum, its own brochures, its own magazine dating to 1974 and its own branch network. Its history is one of gradual, disciplined media accumulation — print first, radio in 2007, television on 1 October 2014, streaming thereafter — each medium added to carry the same Sunday-centred teaching system further.

For viewers beyond the membership, the channel offers a window into one of Indonesia's most organised Qur'an-study movements, broadcasting from Jalan Ronggowarsito in Surakarta to the whole satellite footprint. For the foundation, it remains what it was designed to be: the joints of communication of a dakwah organisation that decided, in the words of its own publishing history, not to ignore the information sector — and then built, piece by piece over fifty years, the television channel to prove it.
