About MTV Germany

MTV Germany

MTV Germany is the German version of the international MTV brand, operated by Paramount and broadcasting from Berlin. Launched in 1997 as MTV Central, it brought the MTV concept — music television for young viewers — to the German-speaking market in German for the first time, challenging the domestic music channel VIVA. Today it airs a mix of music programming, reality shows, and youth entertainment, broadcasting free-to-air across German-speaking Europe.

Overview

MTV Germany is Paramount's youth entertainment channel for the German-speaking world. Its schedule blends the two strands of the modern MTV brand: music programming — video blocks, charts, and music events — and the reality and entertainment shows that have defined MTV globally since the 2000s. The channel broadcasts free-to-air and is financed by advertising, targeting young viewers with bilingual German-English presentation.

The channel's history mirrors the transformation of music television worldwide. Launched as a German-language challenger to VIVA in an era when music videos drove youth culture, it survived the decline of linear music television — including a six-year period behind a paywall — by evolving into a broader youth entertainment channel while retaining its musical roots. Its return to free-to-air distribution in 2017 restored it to the wide audience its brand recognition always promised.

MTV Germany operates alongside Paramount's other German channels — Nickelodeon for children, Comedy Central for comedy — as part of a youth-and-family portfolio that spans the young audience from childhood to young adulthood.

History

MTV Germany launched on 7 March 1997 as MTV Central, part of MTV Networks Europe's regionalisation strategy. Until then, German viewers had received MTV only in English via MTV Europe, while the domestic market belonged to VIVA, the German music channel launched in 1993. The new German-speaking channel offered localised versions of MTV Europe's hit shows — the Euro Top 20, MTV Select, MTV News, Hitlist Germany — and challenged VIVA directly for the young music audience.

In 1999 the channel became available free-to-air throughout Europe on the Astra satellite, massively expanding its reach. In 2001, MTV Networks Germany launched MTV2 Pop, a 24-hour pop music channel (later replaced by the relaunched Nickelodeon). From 2002, the channel began airing MTV US programming — shows such as Jackass, Pimp My Ride, and Date My Mom, subtitled or dubbed — and, like MTV channels across Europe, gradually reduced its localised music programming in favour of the American reality and entertainment formats.

In 2005, Viacom — MTV's owner — bought VIVA, its biggest German competitor, ending the rivalry that had defined German music television for eight years. The acquisition consolidated the youth music audience under one owner but could not halt the structural decline of linear music television as YouTube and streaming reshaped how young people consumed music.

Between 2011 and 2017, MTV Germany moved behind a paywall, limiting its availability mainly to German-speaking pay-television households. On 24 November 2017, a free-to-air standard-definition feed was added on Astra 19.2 degrees East, with German and English audio tracks, restoring the channel to free-to-air audiences. The channel is now part of Paramount Skydance's European networks.

Programming and Content

Music programming remains MTV Germany's foundation. The channel airs music video blocks, chart shows, and themed music hours, alongside coverage of the MTV Europe Music Awards and other music events. While music videos no longer dominate the schedule as they did in the 1990s, they remain the channel's defining content and its link to the brand's heritage.

Reality and entertainment shows form the second pillar: the MTV US reality formats — dating shows, makeover series, docu-soaps, and competition formats — that have defined the global brand since the 2000s air dubbed or subtitled, giving the channel the youth-entertainment mix its audience expects. These shows, with their young casts and social-media-friendly moments, drive the channel's engagement with its target group.

German productions and localised formats supplement the international slate: German presenters, local music coverage, and domestic reality productions give the channel a German voice. The bilingual presentation — German with English audio options — reflects the media habits of its young audience.

Coverage and Audience

MTV Germany broadcasts free-to-air via satellite — on Astra 19.2 degrees East — as well as on cable, IPTV, and digital platforms, primarily serving Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, with its free-to-air signal widely available across Europe. It is carried by Sky Deutschland, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, and other distributors. Its programmes stream through Paramount's digital platforms. Its official website is mtv.de.

The channel's audience is young viewers — teenagers and young adults — with its music programming reaching the younger end and its reality shows the broader youth demographic. The 2017 return to free-to-air restored the channel to the wide distribution its brand awareness always warranted, after six years in which the paywall had constrained its reach. Detailed ratings are published by the industry's measurement bodies.

MTV Germany's cultural role includes its annual presence at the MTV Europe Music Awards and its function as the German window onto global youth culture — the trends, stars, and formats that define young entertainment worldwide.

Ownership

MTV Germany is owned by Paramount — currently Paramount Skydance Corporation — and operated within Paramount Networks EMEAA. Its sister channels in Germany include Nickelodeon, Nicktoons, Nick Jr., and Comedy Central Deutschland.

As a commercial broadcaster, MTV Germany is licensed by the German state media authorities and operates within Germany's dual broadcasting system. The channel's Berlin studios produce its localised programming, continuing the city's role as Germany's youth-media capital.

Within Paramount's European portfolio, MTV Germany is one of the brand's major continental operations — a legacy of the 1997 regionalisation that created the first localised MTV channels in Europe.

Music Television After the Video Era

MTV Germany's history is the history of music television's transformation. In 1997, music videos were the currency of youth culture, and the channel's launch — with German-language versions of the Euro Top 20, Hitlist Germany, and MTV Select — gave German viewers their own MTV for the first time. The rivalry with VIVA, the domestic music channel, defined the era: two channels competing for the young music audience, with VIVA's German-music emphasis against MTV's international pop.

The 2000s brought the structural crisis. YouTube and later streaming services unbundled the music video from the television schedule; young viewers stopped waiting for video blocks and started choosing songs on demand. MTV's response — visible in Germany as everywhere — was to shift toward reality and entertainment programming, reducing music hours in favour of the American reality formats. Viacom's 2005 purchase of VIVA consolidated the declining linear music audience under one owner but could not reverse the trend.

The 2011–2017 paywall period reflected the channel's diminished linear importance; the 2017 return to free-to-air acknowledged the brand's enduring recognition value. Today's MTV Germany balances both legacies: music programming that honours the brand's origins, and youth entertainment that reflects how young audiences actually watch. The MTV Europe Music Awards remain its annual flagship — a reminder that, even in the streaming era, the MTV brand still convenes youth culture.

Digital Presence

MTV Germany's digital presence is centred on mtv.de, its official website, with programmes streaming through Paramount's digital platforms. The channel maintains highly active social media channels, distributing music clips, reality highlights, and youth-culture content to its target audience on the major platforms.

MTV's brand is natively digital: its content — music moments, reality drama, celebrity culture — is designed for social sharing, and the German channel's online following extends its reach far beyond the linear broadcast. The channel's coverage of music events generates substantial online engagement.

For German speakers abroad, the free-to-air satellite signal and Paramount's streaming platforms keep MTV Germany accessible across Europe, subject to rights restrictions. The German-and-English audio tracks reflect the bilingual media consumption of its young audience and position the channel for viewers comfortable in both languages.
